Book excerpt: Author's abstract: In this era of increased accountability and increased pressure to improve our public schools, elementary school leaders, working to meet the provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001, are focusing on developing effective leadership behaviors as they face the complex challenges of meeting organizational goals within their elementary schools and maintaining or increasing staff satisfaction. Leadership behavior has long been of interest in industry, business, military, and the government; on the whole, research shows that focusing on social factors such as morale, group interaction, and supportive relationships has a strong effect on productivity and success. The literature suggests that a relationship exists between leadership behavior and staff morale and job satisfaction. It hypothesizes that principals who consciously practice transformational leadership behaviors have a positive impact on the morale and productivity of their teachers. This study explores the soundness of the hypothesis and provides data for school leaders who strive to develop innovative leadership styles that will empower their teachers and improve morale. This study was conducted to determine if a statistically significant relationship exists between the principals perceived leadership behaviors and teachers morale. The two questionnaires used were the Excellent Principal Inventory and the Purdue Teacher Opinionnaire. Leadership behavior clearly impacts teacher morale, and a positive relationship between leadership behavior and teacher morale is evident in several areas. These findings support that teacher morale can be predicted on the basis of the leadership style asserted by the principal. Principals who use a participatory style of leadership are more likely to have more satisfied and productive teachers than principals who use an autocratic style of leadership.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to construct a theoretical framework explaining the connection between principal leadership practices and the phenomenon of teacher morale. The study also focused on principal leadership practices and the perceived effects that style has on how teachers feel about themselves and their jobs. First, a review of extant literature defined what constitutes effective leadership in school related environments. Second, the researcher defined teacher morale, both high and low, and how it relates to work performance. Third, the researcher attempted to explore how teacher morale and the leadership style of their principals relate. This qualitative study was conducted using interviews of teachers from 7 public elementary schools. Post interview journaling was also conducted by the researcher to capture immediate author perspective. The teachers were interviewed to gain their perceptions of leadership practices that motivate them to enjoy their jobs and work beyond status quo. With information gleaned from teachers, the desired outcome of this research was for principals to self-evaluate their leadership strategies and style and to find importance in building high teacher morale for the betterment of everyone. The researcher coded transcripts into themes, patterns, and the following theoretical constructs: (a) change, (b) leadership practices, (c) mandated testing, (d) stress, (e) communication, (f) acknowledgment, (g) professionalism (h) identifying with teachers, and (i) building community.

Book excerpt: This study utilized the descriptive and quantitative approaches to examine elementary school principals' leadership style and school climate in an urban school district. Research supports the relationship of leadership styles, school climate and student achievement does exist and this study identified and explored how it exists between the school principals' leadership style and school climate. Participants consisted of elementary principals and teachers in an urban school district within the southeastern region of the United States. The purpose of this study was to determine the existence of a relationship between elementary school principals' leadership styles and school climate in an urban school district. Survey instruments were the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire (LBDQ) Form XII Self and the Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire for elementary schools (OCDQ-RE). Demographic information was gathered from the principals and teachers that were subjects of this research (Table 3 and Appendix C). The following research question was posed: Does a relationship exist between the elementary school principals' leadership style and school climate in an urban school district? Descriptive statistics summarized the data characteristics of the independent variable (principal leadership style) and dependent variable (school climate). The data was analyzed using the Pearson Correlation Coefficient. A Positive linear relationship in climate was found for three different groups. These three groups had a statistically significant correlations coefficient and p-values between the LBDQ-Form XII Self and OCDQ-RE subscales. The school principals must be able to access and evaluate the impact they may have on the climate of the school. This study proposed strategies school principals from the participating school district can use to create a more open school climate.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine how the participants perceived their principal's transformational and transactional leadership style and whether differences existed in their perceptions based on the demographic variables of age, gender, experience, educational attainment and ethnicity. Transformational leaders were considered influential, change agents who motivated teachers to work collaboratively as a team to achieve defined goals. On the other hand, transactional leaders developed impersonal relationships and motivated teachers according to their personal self-interest. They focused on social and economic exchanges, using contingent rewards to reinforce positive behaviors and administered punishment to reform negative behaviors. One hundred and thirteen participants from six elementary schools participated in this study. The Multi-Leadership Questionnaire was used to collect data. Cronbach alpha was used to establish internal reliability consistency of the instrument. The data were analyzed using mean scores, percentages, chi-square, t-test and ANOVA. The research findings indicated that perception scores at both school levels were higher for transformational leadership than transactional leadership. According to the mean score interpretation (Table 2) and the participants' mean scores, 92.9 % of participants perceived their principal as fairly often a transformational leader and 7.1% of participants perceived their principal as frequently a transformational leader. Ironically, 100% of participants perceived their principal as sometimes a transactional leader. The research findings further indicated that overall, teachers at both levels perceived their principal as fairly often a transformational leader and sometimes a transactional leader. Based on the demographic findings, an ANOVA revealed statistically significant differences in teachers' perceptions of their principal's transformational leadership style based on years of experience. Participants with more years of experience perceived their principal with significantly higher mean scores than those with fewer years of experience. Recommendations include: (a) conducting further research to determine the impact that principals' leadership style have on student performance from a national perspective, (b) conducting a Longitudinal Research study to determine the impact that leadership styles have on student performance, and (c) exploring leadership styles extensively to identify the leadership traits exhibited by both public and private elementary school principals.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a statistical significance between elementary principals' leadership styles and their school's level of parental involvement in six selected schools in southwestern Alabama. This study was a correlational quantitative research design. Principals' Leadership Styles were self-assessed by the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) developed by Kouzes and Posner (2003). The LPI consisted of 30 statements and the principals were asked to rank what they would typically do regarding given behaviors. The LPI measured five different areas of leadership. Data from this study indicated that the identified principals did not all demonstrate a high abundance of leadership behaviors in the same areas. The two areas in which all principals displayed high scores were Encourage the Heart and Model the Way. Parents' Sign-In logs were used to gather data on parental involvement hours within the schools. The researcher referenced the number of hours parents spent within the schools and divided that by the number of students within the school to derive an average parental involvement hours per student. A demographic questionnaire was used to gather information from the principals. A breakdown of demographic information was also used when compiling data from the surveys. Findings from the study revealed that there is not a statistical significance between principals' leadership styles and their schools' level of parental involvement. Data showed that the number of parental involvement hours varied from school to school and there was no significant relationship between principal's leadership styles and parental involvement.

Book excerpt: At the time of this writing, little research had been done regarding principals’ leadership styles and its effect on teachers’ collaboration in a Professional Learning Community (PLC). I completed a quantitative study in which I surveyed 66 teachers in a large school district in the southeast region of the United States about their principal’s leadership styles and their collaboration in PLCs at their schools. I found teacher collaboration in a PLC positively correlated with each component of the transformational leadership style. Similarly, I found there was one positive correlation and one negative correlation between teacher collaboration and the components of the transactional leadership style. Additionally, I found there were two negative correlations between teacher collaboration and the components of the passive-avoidant leadership style. I also found all components of the transformational leadership style were predictors for teacher collaboration while only one component of the transactional leadership style was a predictor for teacher collaboration. Similarly, only one component of the passive-avoidant leadership style was a predictor for teacher collaboration. Finally, I found the transformational leadership style could predict shared and supportive leadership, supportive conditions- relationships, and shared values and visions among the school. I also found passive-avoidant leadership is not a predictor for collaborative learning and application among the staff. Lastly, I found no leadership styles were predictors for shared personal practice and supportive conditions- structures.

Book excerpt: Multiple Regression was used to examine the relationship between the principal's leadership styles (Independent Variable) and growth in the Performance Index (Dependent Variable). The 19 principals' dominant leadership style was transformational leadership. The regression model failed to be significant; therefore, based on the data, leadership as measured by the MLQ-5X is not a good predictor for growth. The relationship on school leadership and growth was not significantly substantial. Although there was no predictive relationship, the data verify that the 19 schools that have shown growth had transformational leaders. Future research suggests a larger sample size to determine if leadership styles have a relationship to student growth.

Book excerpt: The goal of this study was to examine whether the leadership style of principals affects teacher and student performance. The study includes an elementary, middle, and high school principal along with two teachers from each school who worked at schools that were in good standing from 2007-2011. Each school made adequate yearly progress (AYP) each year according to the No Child Left Behind Status History Report. This study examined one over arching research question: What do principals and teachers say about school and schooling? Data for this study was gathered through principal interviews, teacher interviews, and the results of an online Inventory of Leadership Styles (ILS) self-report and direct-report survey. The findings and actions by the principals in this study revealed that principals' leadership styles have an indirect effect on teacher and student performance. The leaders in this study set clear goals and directions built around high academic expectations. They worked to build faculty morale by empowering and motivating teachers. The professional development in their schools included professional learning communities in which teachers were provided time for collaboration. Instruction in each school is student centered and data driven. Teachers' motivated students while consistently keeping them engaged. Principals in each school took extra measures to engage parents and build community relationships. Principal participants utilized a combination of leadership styles. The results of this study suggested the need for a closer examination of professional learning communities and the strategies discussed within that improve student performance.

Book excerpt: This quantitative case study examined teacher perceptions within one rural, public East Tennessee school district of principal leadership styles based upon Kouzes and Posner's five domains: challenge the process, enable others to act, encourage the heart, inspire a shared vision, and model the way to determine if a dominate domain existed within teacher perception of the principal's leadership style. Principals who understand the effectiveness and impact that different leadership styles have upon the school environment, specifically teacher perceptions, generally identify with a particular style allowing the creation of a positive educational environment (Rowland, 2008). Teacher understanding of principals' leadership styles increased self-awareness and job satisfaction the teacher achieved. Effectively decreasing the chances of teacher burnout and job-related stress (Meador, 2016).
