To Jane, the idea is ludicrous. Devising a plan only her family and close friends know about, she dresses as a boy to avoid the event. But even the best plans don't always go as they were supposed to. Soon, the paths of Jane and the Prince are bound to cross, and both of their lives will change forever.

Lucian has better things to do than hunt down a creature who may or may not exist—a siren whose singing voice can heal anything. But with his brother's life depending on his success, he sets out, only to be distracted by a woman whose beauty is enough to stir the desire he'd long ago thought was gone. Unfortunately, courting her is as dangerous as the enemy hunting them down, for Siovon would rip his heart out before allowing him to find her sister. Siovon doesn't trust Lucian, no matter how much his every touch ignites her passion. After being held captive for the last decade, she will do anything it takes to find and protect her sister—including lying to strike a deal with the handsome vampire. If giving up her life means Calysta would be safe, then so be it. However, the more time she spends with Lucian, the harder it becomes to ignore the powerful truemate call binding them together. The line between true love and duty to family becomes blurred in this battle of the hearts, but Siovon and Lucian will learn the hard way that some sacrifice might be worth it in the end. That is, if it doesn't tear them apart first.

Book excerpt: Among the key pieces are a significant number of objects from Augustus II's royal collection intended for the Japanisches Palais, his pleasure palace in Dresden, either commissioned from Meissen or imported from China and Japan. Other rare and important objects include many examples of early red stoneware (Böttgersteinzeug) as well as numerous pieces created under the direction of Johann Höroldt (1696-1775). Curator of decorative arts Maria Santangelo provides a comprehensive history about this important collection and its key pieces while delineating the early development of the manufactory. "A Princely Pursuit" also features a general history about Meissen collecting by Meissen specialist Sebastian Kuhn, as well as an introductory text and stories about individual pieces by the collector himself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, the evidence for an oral epic tradition in ancient Greece has grown enormously along with our ever-increasing awareness of worldwide oral traditions. John Foley here examines the artistic implications that oral tradition holds for the understanding of the Iliad and Odyssey in order to establish a context for their original performance and modern-day reception. In Homer's Traditional Art, Foley addresses three crucially interlocking areas that lead us to a fuller appreciation of the Homeric poems. He first explores the reality of Homer as their actual author, examining historical and comparative evidence to propose that "Homer" is a legendary and anthropomorphic figure rather than a real-life author. He next presents the poetic tradition as a specialized and highly resonant language bristling with idiomatic implication. Finally, he looks at Homer's overall artistic achievement, showing that it is best evaluated via a poetics aimed specifically at works that emerge from oral tradition. Along the way, Foley offers new perspectives on such topics as characterization and personal interaction in the epics, the nature of Penelope's heroism, the implications of feasting and lament, and the problematic ending of the Odyssey. His comparative references to the South Slavic oral epic open up new vistas on Homer's language, narrative patterning, and identity. Homer's Traditional Art represents a disentangling of the interwoven strands of orality, textuality, and verbal art. It shows how we can learn to appreciate how Homer's art succeeds not in spite of the oral tradition in which it was composed but rather through its unique agency.

Book excerpt: Historians have so far made few attempts to assess directly the costs and benefits of Britain's investment in empire. This book presents answers to some of the key questions about the economics of imperialism: how large was the flow of finance to the empire? How great were the profits on empire investment? What were the social costs of maintaining the empire? Who received the profits, and who bore the costs? The authors show that colonial finance did not dominate British capital markets; returns from empire investment were not high in comparison to earnings in the domestic and foreign sectors; there is no evidence of continued exploitative profits; and empire profits were earned at a substantial cost to the taxpayer. They depict British imperialism as a mechanism to effect an income transfer from the tax-paying middle class to the elites in which the ownership of imperial enterprise was heavily concentrated, with some slight net transfer to the colonies in the process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few people have had a greater impact on the lives of Canadians than the late Supreme Court judge Justice Emmett Hall. At the forefront of several important judgements in the 1960s and 70s ? such as Truscott and Calder ? Hall is perhaps best known for his role in the adoption of universal health care at the federal level in 1968. Based on extensive interviews with Hall and people who knew him, Frederick Vaughan's Aggressive in Pursuit tells Hall's remarkable story. Born in Quebec in 1898 and raised in Saskatchewan, Hall had a long and distinguished career as a lawyer. In 1957, former law school classmate Prime Minister John Diefenbaker appointed Hall to the Saskatchewan Court of Queen's Bench, and four years later to the office of Chief Justice of Saskatchewan. In 1963, Diefenbaker elevated Hall to the Supreme Court of Canada, where he took up the task of universal health care and showed himself to be an aggressive defender of native causes. Aggressive in Pursuit traces Hall's career from his earliest days of private practice in Saskatchewan to the end of his career, and death, in 1994. It shows how one prairie lawyer made a difference in the life of Canada.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the millennium has always held the world in fear of earthquakes, plague, and the catastrophic destruction of the world. At the dawn of the 21st millennium the world is still experiencing these anxieties, as seen by the onslaught of fantasies of renewal, doomsday predictions, and New Age prophecies. This fascinating book explores the millenarianism that flourished in western Europe between the eleventh and sixteenth centuries. Covering the full range of revolutionary and anarchic sects and movements in medieval Europe, Cohn demonstrates how prophecies of a final struggle between the hosts of Christ and Antichrist melded with the rootless poor's desire to improve their own material conditions, resulting in a flourishing of millenarian fantasies. The only overall study of medieval millenarian movements, The Pursuit of the Millennium offers an excellent interpretation of how, again and again, in situations of anxiety and unrest, traditional beliefs come to serve as vehicles for social aspirations and animosities.
