The number of papers and monographs published has increased dramatically in the past five years. Nowhere has this increase been as dramatic as in the field of acute and chronic hepatitis. Why then should there be still another book? Despite the sheer volume of words published, it is still difficult to find in anyone volume a compilation of all of the most significant work. Most mono graphs have considered either chronic or acute hepatitis, not both. Few works have addressed both the clinician and the basic scientist. This book addresses both of these audiences and considers both of these diseases. It was designed to provide an authoritative but concise assessment of our changing concepts of acute and chronic hepatitis. It covers what is currently known and, based on the most convincing research, believed about these diseases. To fulfill this ambitious goal, only authors with international reputations in their fields of expertise were invited to contribute. In the evolution of our current thoughts on the pathogenesis and manage ment of acute and chronic hepatitis, our ideas have changed several times. This book presents the facts as they are known today and, in areas where all the facts are not established, presents the well-founded opinions of those considered to be authorities. The authors present established and usually confirmed data and do not deal extensively with areas of speculation or unconfirmed material.

Book excerpt: The author’s discussion of Crow tribal history and his vivid descriptions of current reservation life show how the Apsáalooke are adapting to a changing world. By examining pivotal social and religious institutions, including the clan-uncle and clan-aunt relationships, the acquisition and use of medicine, and the Sun Dance, the author show how reciprocity and interdependence weave together Apsáalooke society and help individuals determine their place in clan, society, and cosmos.

Book excerpt: Osteopontin is a GRGDS-containing phosphoprotein secreted by most epithelial cells, many cancer cells, and stimulated or activated cells of various types including smooth muscle cells, fibroblasts and macrophages. It is a ligand for the avb3 integrin, promoting cell adhesion and triggering a signal transduction pathway that can influence gene expression. Binding multiple Ca++ ions, osteopontin is involved in the formation and remodelling of mineralised tissues and Ca++ homeostasis; it has also been implicated in host defence mechanisms.

Book excerpt: Peter Sís's remarkable biography The Pilot and the Little Prince celebrates the author of The Little Prince, one of the most beloved books in the world. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was born in France in 1900, when airplanes were just being invented. Antoine dreamed of flying and grew up to be a pilot—and that was when his adventures began. He found a job delivering mail by plane, which had never been done before. He and his fellow pilots traveled to faraway places and discovered new ways of getting from one place to the next. Antoine flew over mountains and deserts. He battled winds and storms. He tried to break aviation records, and sometimes he even crashed. From his plane, Antoine looked down on the earth and was inspired to write about his life and his pilot-hero friends in memoirs and in fiction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters of this book are grouped to provide a logical sequence for the reader. The first section, entitled Cell Types and Innervation Patterns brings together six presentations that address different aspects of the detailed anatomy of the dentate gyrus. Particular emphasis is placed on the three major cell types, granule cells, basket cells and the heterogeneous cells of the hilus. In addition, two of the chapters focus on the termination pattern of chemically-identified afferents to this region. The section concludes with a paper that bridges the gap between anatomy and the next section: Cellular Physiology and Functional Plasticity of neurons in the dentate gyrus. The five chapters in the second section are devoted to the electrophysiology of different neuronal types of the dentate gyrus. The middle section, entitled Seizures and the Regulation of Gene Expression and Protein Content, demonstrates some remarkable alterations in the expression of neuropeptides, growth factors and intracellular calcium-regulating proteins in experimental models of epilepsy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an introductory guide for students to four centuries of diplomatic thought. Since diplomacy as we know it was created during the Renaissance in Italy, a number of major figures have reflected on the place of diplomacy in foreign affairs and the problems associated with its pursuit. These include statesmen, international lawyers and historians, most of whom had experience as diplomats of the first or second rank. This book examines the thought of some of the most important of them, from Niccolò Machiavelli in the early sixteenth century to Henry Kissinger in the late twentieth century.

Book excerpt: There are more sources for Naqia/Zakutu, the mother of Esarhaddon and grandmother of Assurbanipal, than for all other Sargonid royal women combined. This work constitutes a reevaluation of these sources with an eye to determining which of the modern myths about this woman are supported by the sources and which are mere speculation. Specific suggestions about the part played by Naqia/Zakutu in her son's overall plan for his empire are linked to form a coherent picture of her role as queen mother.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this pathbreaking study of the works of Plato, Aristotle, Rousseau, and Mill, Susan Moller Okin turns to the tradition of political philosophy that pervades Western culture and its institutions to understand why the gap between formal and real gender equality persists. Our philosophical heritage, Okin argues, largely rests on the assumption of the natural inequality of the sexes. Women cannot be included as equals within political theory unless its deep-rooted assumptions about the traditional family, its sex roles, and its relation to the wider world of political society are challenged. So long as this attitude pervades our institutions and behavior, the formal equality women have won has no chance of becoming substantive.
