Book Synopsis Primitivismo y modernismo by : Xon de Ros
Download or read book Primitivismo y modernismo written by Xon de Ros and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Exploring Transcultural Histories of Psychotherapies by : Sonu Shamdasani
Download or read book Exploring Transcultural Histories of Psychotherapies written by Sonu Shamdasani and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws together studies of the histories of psychotherapies throughout the world in a comparative setting, charting the intersections of these connected histories and transcultural networks of knowledge exchange and healing practices. This volume’s explorations of these transcultural histories help to illuminate the way in which these practices have shaped (and continue to shape) contemporary notions of psychological disorder, well-being and identity itself. The contributors question the value-free status claimed by a wide array of contemporary psychotherapies, as well as the presuppositions of present-day ‘evidence based’ practice. Suspended between several different fields, the advent of modern psychotherapies represents one of the distinctive features of twentieth century Western societies, and one that has been rapidly spreading to other parts of the world. This volume will be of interest to those seeking to apply the conclusions of historical study to contemporary situations. This book was originally published as a special issue of The European Journal of Psychotherapy & Counselling.
Book Synopsis Apologia and Criticism by : Gonzalo Pasamar
Download or read book Apologia and Criticism written by Gonzalo Pasamar and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first modern overview of the history of historiography in Spain. It covers sources from Juan de Mariana's History of Spain, written at the end of the sixteenth century, up to current historical writings and their context. The main objective of the book is to shed light on the continuities and breaks in the ways that Spanish historians represented ideas of Spain. The concept of historiography used is wide enough to span not only academic works and institutions but also public uses of history, including the history taught in schools. The methodology employed by the author combines the tradition of studies of national identity with those of historiography. One of the key themes in the book is the role of the historical profession in Spain and its influence on national discourse from the nineteenth century onwards.
Book Synopsis (Re)collecting the Past by : Victoria Carpenter
Download or read book (Re)collecting the Past written by Victoria Carpenter and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses the representation of history and collective memory in Latin American literature. The book presents a variety of novel perspectives on the subject, linked by the common themes of the subjectivity of time and history, literature used as a political tool and the representation of marginalized groups. The collection takes an original approach to viewing national histories as represented in literature by adopting a cross-disciplinary position. While there are other publications addressing some of the issues raised in this collection, this book goes beyond literary representations of history. The essays collected here examine technological, political and social developments as a means of creating, re-structuring and (in some cases) potentially destroying nations.

Book Synopsis Geo-epistemology by : Claudio Canaparo
Download or read book Geo-epistemology written by Claudio Canaparo and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the formation and development of Latin America as name, idea and concept, as well as the wider concepts of location, knowledge and the relationship between them. Latin America is not only a subject or an academic construct, it is also a perspective from which subjectivities are established, knowledge is developed and narratives are produced. This study argues that epistemology cannot exist in abstract terms, despite traditional academic arguments to the contrary. Therefore the author uses 'Latin America' to anchor his more general arguments in a particular location and calls this approach 'geo-epistemology'. The author discusses how the specificity of a particular location can contribute to the establishment of both a method of formulating human knowledge and the boundaries of what can be known. The text explores the relationship between philosophy, geography and geometry, and analyses the notions of science, empire and colonialism. In response to the contemporary debate on 'space of thinking', the author proposes a new concept of 'reversal thinking', which leads to an examination of the roles of language and writing from an epistemic point of view.

Book Synopsis The Problems of Literary Translation by : Maria T. Sanchez
Download or read book The Problems of Literary Translation written by Maria T. Sanchez and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the various linguistic and cultural problems which point towards the practical impossibility of conveying in one language exactly what was originally said in another. The author provides an exhaustive discussion of Spanish translations from English texts, including non-standard registers. Equivalence across languages, that most elusive of terms in the whole theory of translation, is discussed in terms of linguistic equivalence, textual equivalence, cultural equivalence and pragmatic equivalence. Other aspects studied include how translation has been perceived over the centuries, the differences and the similarities between a writer and a translator, plus a detailed examination of translation as process, all of which bring the problems of literary translation into perspective.
Book Synopsis Performative Bodies, Hybrid Tongues by : Julian Vigo
Download or read book Performative Bodies, Hybrid Tongues written by Julian Vigo and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reconsiders the body in literature and makes a case for visual representation as a physical and gesticulative domain for rethinking the constructions of gender, nationalism and sexuality. Examining literary production from the eleventh century until the present, the author argues that the body in contemporary North Africa and Latin America serves as a physical and symbolic terrain upon which sexual, textual, national, racial and linguistic identities are vectored and through which postcolonial and hegemonic antagonisms of power and identity are resolved. Rather than embracing «third world» identity as a residual repository of western thought, colonization and linguistic infusion, the author suggests that the paradigm of cultural identity in the Maghreb and Latin America is best understood through an examination of the emergent corporeal articulations of subjectivity prevalent in these literatures and visual cultures. The text examines the body as a critical landscape through which the various discourses of nationhood, gender and sexuality converge in order to construct a reading of the social that neither amasses subjectivity as singular under the rubric of the «third world», nor couches the other within static notions of gendered, sexual or racial identities.
Book Synopsis Beyond The Back Room by : Marian Womack
Download or read book Beyond The Back Room written by Marian Womack and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2011 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays examines current trends in scholarly research on Spanish author Carmen Martín Gaite (1925-2000). It concentrates on the least explored areas of Martín Gaite's oeuvre, such as her collage artwork, the relationship between image and text in her work, and her close relationship with themes such as genre writing, the fairy tale, and textual/physical notions of space, as well as her personal theories on orality and narration. As we pass the tenth anniversary of her death, Martín Gaite continues to be an increasing focus of study, as scholars start to identify and comprehend the breadth and scope of her work. The essays in the volume complement previous studies of Martín Gaite's major works from the 1960s and 1970s by focusing largely on her later novels, together with in-depth analysis of the manuscripts and artistic materials that have been made available since her death.
Book Synopsis Ancient Economies in Comparative Perspective by : Marcella Frangipane
Download or read book Ancient Economies in Comparative Perspective written by Marcella Frangipane and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-09 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the economic organization of ancient societies from a comparative perspective. By pursuing an interdisciplinary approach, including contributions by archaeologists, historians of antiquity, economic historians as well as historians of economic thought, it studies various aspects of ancient economies, such as the material living conditions including production technologies, etc.; economic institutions such as markets and coinage; as well as the economic thinking of the time. In the process, it also explores the comparability of economic thought, economic institutions and economic systems in ancient history. Focusing on the Ancient Near East as well as the Mediterranean, including Greece and Rome, this comparative perspective makes it possible to identify historical permanencies, but also diverse forms of social and political organization and cultural systems. These institutions are then evaluated in terms of their capacity to solve economic problems, such as the efficient use of resources or political stability. The first part of the book introduces readers to the methodological context of the comparative approach, including an evaluation of the related historiographical tradition. Subsequent parts discuss a range of development models, elements of economic thinking in ancient societies, the role of trade and globalization, and the use of monetary and financial instruments, as well as political aspects.
Download or read book Writing Bonds written by Manuela Palacios and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the emergence of women poets from the 1980s to the present in both Ireland and Galicia. Departing from common ground in shared myths and comparable political and social circumstances, each contributor to this volume looks into central aspects of Irish and Galician identity issues, which range from configurations of the nation, nature and feminine paradigms, to the poets' elaborations on their own literary practice. The comparative approach followed shows both that questions raised in one community can find relevant answers in the other and that reciprocal knowledge helps to disseminate the writers' work - and the criticism of it - beyond their respective national borders. This collection of essays and interviews also provides both poets and critics with a mutual space in which to voice their concerns, thus bringing down the barrier that is often raised artificially between these two literary activities.

Book Synopsis Mexican Travel Writing by : Thea Pitman
Download or read book Mexican Travel Writing written by Thea Pitman and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a detailed study of salient examples of Mexican travel writing from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. While scholars have often explored the close relationship between European or North American travel writing and the discourse of imperialism, little has been written on how postcolonial subjects might relate to the genre. This study first traces the development of a travel-writing tradition based closely on European imperialist models in mid-nineteenth-century Mexico. It then goes on to analyse how the narrative techniques of postmodernism and the political agenda of postcolonialism might combine to help challenge the genre's imperialist tendencies in late twentieth-century works of travel writing, focusing in particular on works by writers Juan Villoro, Héctor Perea and Fernando Solana Olivares.
