Book Synopsis Jungle Laboratories by : Gabriela Soto Laveaga
Download or read book Jungle Laboratories written by Gabriela Soto Laveaga and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2009-12-23 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1940s chemists discovered that barbasco, a wild yam indigenous to Mexico, could be used to mass-produce synthetic steroid hormones. Barbasco spurred the development of new drugs, including cortisone and the first viable oral contraceptives, and positioned Mexico as a major player in the global pharmaceutical industry. Yet few people today are aware of Mexico’s role in achieving these advances in modern medicine. In Jungle Laboratories, Gabriela Soto Laveaga reconstructs the story of how rural yam pickers, international pharmaceutical companies, and the Mexican state collaborated and collided over the barbasco. By so doing, she sheds important light on a crucial period in Mexican history and challenges us to reconsider who can produce science. Soto Laveaga traces the political, economic, and scientific development of the global barbasco industry from its emergence in the 1940s, through its appropriation by a populist Mexican state in 1970, to its obsolescence in the mid-1990s. She focuses primarily on the rural southern region of Tuxtepec, Oaxaca, where the yam grew most freely and where scientists relied on local, indigenous knowledge to cultivate and harvest the plant. Rural Mexicans, at first unaware of the pharmaceutical and financial value of barbasco, later acquired and deployed scientific knowledge to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies, lobby the Mexican government, and ultimately transform how urban Mexicans perceived them. By illuminating how the yam made its way from the jungles of Mexico, to domestic and foreign scientific laboratories where it was transformed into pills, to the medicine cabinets of millions of women across the globe, Jungle Laboratories urges us to recognize the ways that Mexican peasants attained social and political legitimacy in the twentieth century, and positions Latin America as a major producer of scientific knowledge.
Book Synopsis Food Crops: Evolution, Diversity and Advances by : D.A. Patil

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The treatise presents a wide range of information on different facets of world food crops. It justifies the present state of knowledge with reference to crop history, initial and latest developments with evolutionary approach based on karyotaxonomic and geographical evidence. The author has endeavored to dilate attempts for crop domestication and cultivation by worldwide human societies. These are supported by various considerations like ethnology, philology, ancient and religious treatises, archaeological evidence, works of pioneers, various human affairs, etc. He further based his writing on botanical conclusions accrued from distribution, number of varieties, occurrence of wild types, agro-botanical characteristics, time and place of origin, and worldwide usage of each crop species. The treatise is a highly-acclaimed source of information of crop plants useful to degree and post-graduate students of botany, agriculture and food science as a main text and reference work for researchers. It is recommendable for use in any country especially in the English speaking world. It will also appeal to the general reader, being rich in contents. In a nutshell, this treatise is a history of development of food crops. And therefore, a humble attempt has been made, first, to ascertain what was actually done or said, and second, to emphasize the causes of success or failure. Truly, it is the study of causes that makes history more fruitful and a basis for evaluating the future events with confidence.

Book Synopsis Archaeology of Manila Galleon Seaports and Early Maritime Globalization by : Chunming Wu
Download or read book Archaeology of Manila Galleon Seaports and Early Maritime Globalization written by Chunming Wu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-31 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the archaeological and historical research on the seaport heritage of galleon navigation in Asia-Pacific region. It reconstructs the Manila Galleons’ era of early maritime globalization, established and operated by Spanish navigators from the 16th to 19th centuries. The galleons sailed across the Pacific via the hub seaports and trade centers of Manila in the Philippines and Acapulco in Mexico, forming a prosperous sea route connecting eastern Asia and New Spain on the American continent for more than 250 years. This pioneering navigation of the pan-Pacific regions promoted early global maritime trade along the new Maritime Silk Road between the East and the West. Written by archaeologists and cultural historians from America, Mexico, Japan, the Philippines, Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, it presents the latest investigations and research on the galleon-affiliated seaports, including Acapulco and San Blas in Mexico, Guam, Manila in Philippines, Yuegang (Crescent Harbor), Xiamen (Amoy), Keelung and Macao in China, Nagasaki in Japan. This joint research sheds new light on the history of navigation and maritime trade between galleon-affiliated harbors; the origin, production, transport and trade of the galleon cargo; social cultural exchange along the new Maritime Silk Road in the pan-Pacific region; and the history of maritime globalization in last 500 years. It offers a new perspective on maritime archaeology and traces the different stages of the galleon trade and affiliated maritime history, including "Yuegang Outbound", "Manila Entrepotting" and "Bound for Acapulco", presenting a panoramagram of Spanish pan-Pacific trade and early maritime globalization.
