Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author is in his eighth decade of life and claims to have found the key to the issues that have occupied him since childhood. As a regular-ordinary individual, he has concluded that his observations can apply to all others, regardless of circumstance or environment in which they might find themselves. His inquiries and experiences have suggested that most are hollow and void inside, but don’t recognize it because they are filled with stories and concepts that came from outside their selves. These foreign-social notions, when compared with what he or she feels inside, lead to angst and frustration when confronting life. The Sapientific Method gives the individual tools to clear things up and basically start life anew by filling the self with his or her own storyline that enables a new reinterpreted view of the world. This is what being born again means.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exner's Comprehensive System has attracted so much attention in recent years that many clinicians and personality researchers are unaware that alternative Rorschach scoring systems exist. This is unfortunate, because some of these systems have tremendous clinical value. Scoring the Rorschach: Seven Validated Systems provides detailed reviews of the best-validated alternative approaches, and points to promising new paths towards the continued growth and refinement of Rorschach interpretation. The editors set the stage with an extended introduction to historical controversies and cutting-edge empirical methods for Rorschach validation. Each chapter presents a different Rorschach scoring system. A brief history is followed by detailed information on scoring and interpretation, a comprehensive summary of evidence bearing on construct validity, and discussion of clinical applications, empirical limitations, and future directions. A user-friendly scoring "manual" for each system offers readers practical guidance. The systems tap a broad array of content areas including ego defenses, thought disorder, mental representations of self and others, implicit motives, personality traits, and potential for psychotherapy. All psychologists seriously engaged in the work of personality assessment will find in this book welcome additions to their professional toolkits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a managed care era, the MMPI-2 is becoming an overloaded workhorse, required to generate more and more of the assessments that a battery of instruments once did. Though all now rely on the MMPI-2 for good reasons, and the MMPI has fallen out of use entirely, some important and clinically useful scales were lost in the transition. Edward Gotts and Thomas Knudsen have recovered these scales and integrated them with all the standard MMPI-2 scales, the recently published Restructured Clinical Scales, and a number of scales they have constructed to assess positive strengths and coping abilities, and response consistency-inconsistency. This book lays out their new Content Cluster interpretive approach. Drawing on data from a large psychiatric inpatient sample, they present item composition, reliability, and validity information for each recovered and new scale, and convincingly demonstrate that their new Content Cluster approach results in improved prediction and interpretive power. They also show how to conjoin Rorschach and MMPI-2 results in more effective assessment strategies, and how to tie MMPI-2 results to specific DSM-IV criteria. The Clinical Interpretation of the MMPI-2: A Content Cluster Approach offers psychologists essential new tools for clinical and personality assessment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition continues to present the following special features of its highly successful predecessor: * an analysis of the major partitionings of the MMPI into special scales in terms of their clinical usefulness, resulting in the selection of those scales that most discriminatingly and non-redundantly represent the core psychological traits and qualities captured by the MMPI; * a number of individually developed scales that tap into additional aspects of validity, psychopathology, and adjustment and personality; * the Indiana Special Scales which sample additional areas that were not as well identified or delineated by prior scale development; * a critique of the foregoing selections in light of the extant MMPI literature (which this second edition further expands up to the current time) and of a major investigation at the Indiana University Medical School of the conjoint use of special scales; * a critique of the shortcomings of high-point codes; * a detailed, categorized listing of the most useful scales in empirical clusters based on their established intercorrelations such that not only scale elevations but also interrelations (and the departures from the expected) of scales become clinically interpretable; * an exploration of the interrelationships between Rorschach and MMPI variables, leading to complementary use of these two instruments. This second edition also takes into account the development of MMPI-2 and the status of its new special scales vis-a-vis the established scales derived from the original MMPI. In so doing, it indicates why the original scales continue to offer substantial advantages over the MMPI-2 scales. It further examines changes in the nosology of personality disorders and proposes special scale markers for these disorders as they have been clarified progressively through DSM-IV. This volume offers the MMPI user a library of psychological report statements based on special scale interpretation, with recommended score ranges and cutting points for particular inferences. These latter features appear together as an appendix styled as "The Human Computer." Unlike the typical computer-generated report, this appendix makes all decision rules explicit, thereby permitting the user to use the library of statements with full knowledge of their applicability. By retaining the element of clinical judgment -- the human dimension of inference -- the user is enabled to better integrate MMPI special scale findings with data from other sources while in the process of crafting the report. All of these new features are accompanied by applicable literature citations.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive text provides a practical framework for selecting, administering, interpreting and integrating data from commonly used methods of clinical psychological assessment. More than a codebook or list of possible interpretations of tests, it stresses integrating data as a means of solving problems and making informed decisions. The first two chapters deal with introductory principles of assessment including historical trends, evaluating tests, issues, and guidelines, psychological assessment within the general medical, legal, educational, psychological and psychiatric contexts. The middle chapters (3-11) cover methods of collecting information including interviewing, behavioral assessment, Wechsler intelligence scales, Bender Gestalt, Rorschach, Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory and other means. The final chapter provides specific guidelines for report writing, detailed formats and four sample reports. Revised and updated for this Second Edition, the text stresses interrelationships among test scores, history, observational data, and other forms of input as being essential for arriving at accurate psychological assessment.

Book excerpt: This book serves as an up-to-date Rorschach primer and elaborates on the various applications of Rorschach assessment for adolescents with respect to differential diagnosis, forensic consultation, and therapeutic assessment. It opens with three chapters that provide readers with a basic overview and introduction to the topics integrated throughout the text. The first reviews the development and foundations of the Rorschach Inkblot Method; the second discusses key issues in the assessment of adolescents, with particular attention to differentiating patterns of psychopathology from normal developmental variations; and the third presents general considerations in using performance-based assessment instruments in the assessment of personality functioning in adolescence. Later chapters explore the current status of the Rorschach Inkblot Method with respect to theoretical formulations, research findings, and practice guidelines. The final chapter draws on information in the preceding chapters to present a model for Rorschach assessment of adolescents. This model is designed to facilitate accurate and useful formulations of personality functioning that contribute substantially to advancing responsible adolescent development.
