Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Student's Manual of the History of India To MY readers. - I have been induced to write this Manual of the History of India to supply a want which I have ob served to exist among aii ciasses or' English people. Most of' my young friends tell me they are never taught anything about India; and while I deplore this, I also see that many persons of mature age are deterred by their length, and other causes, from attempting the perusal of the larger Indian his tories. It occurred to me, therefore, that a complete, but easy history, might be acceptable and useful to all; andi was the more led to this consideration from my own expe rience; for I do not know of any work from Which enough can be learned without difficulty - either to satisfy present requirements, or to induce a more general study. The large Histories of India, besides being voluminous, are costly; most of them are out of print, and thus beyond the reach of ordi nary students. Many of them are only fi'agments - histories of peculiar periods or peoples; and thus reference is required to many works by the student who desires to follow the oom plete history of India in all its branches. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from India, Vol. 5 More than eighty-five thousand copies of twenty-two English editions of the Brief History were published during the author's life, and a twenty-third edition prepared by the Rev. W. H. Hutton bears the date 1903. Several translations of the little book have been made, including versions in some of the languages of India. It has been widely used as a text-book in India, and since 1886 has been required for entrance examination by the Calcutta University. Such evidences of the authoritative character and the popularity of the Brief History are surely a full warrant for the selection of it as one of the volumes of the history OF nations. Sir William Hunter may be allowed in the words of the preface to the first edition to tell the aims of his book: In this book I try to exhibit the growth of the Indian peoples, to show what part they have played in the world's progress, and what sufferings they have endured from other nations. Short Indian histories, as written by Englishmen, usually dismiss the first two thousand years of their narrative in a few pages, and start by disclosing India as a conquered country. This plan is not good, either for Europeans in India or for the Indians themselves; nor does it accord with the facts. As long as Indian history is presented to the Indian youth as nothing but a dreary record of disunion and subjection, our anglo-indian schools can scarcely become the nurseries of a self-respecting nation. I have there fore tried to put together, from original sources, a brief narrative of what I believe to be the true history of the peoples of India. These sources have been carefully examined in my larger works. This little book merely states, without discussing, the results arrived at by the labor of thirty years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of India, Vol. 1 Not the least historic of the ancient nations of the East is India, even when compared with Egypt and its monuments, China and its annals, or Assyria and Babylonia with their cuneiform tablets and their cylinders. India's earliest records, written in its literature, have been inscribed in the hearts of the people for more than three thousand years; and from that remote age its history is recorded in an almost unbroken line to this very century, so that he who will may follow its development through the early centuries that preceded the Christian era, onward through the mediaeval period of Mohammedan rule, down to the days when the Europeans entered India and the country came under British dominion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of India, Vol. 1 But the excellence of histories derived from European researches alone does not entirely set aside the utility of similar inquiries conducted un der the guidance of impressions received in India; which, as they rise from a separate source, may sometimes lead to different conclusions. Few are likely to take up these volumes unless they are previously interested in the subject, and such persons may not be unwilling to examine it from a fresh point of View: if the result suggests no new opinions, it may at least assist in deciding on those contested by former writers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of India, Vol. 2 The historian's duty is to separate the true from the false, the certain from the uncertain, and the doubt ful from that which cannot be accepted. Every investigator must before all things look upon himself as one who is summoned to serve on a jury. He has only to consider how far the statement Of the case is complete and clearly set forth by the evidence. Then he draws his conclusion and gives his vote, whether it be that his Opinion coincides with that Of the foreman or not. This prefatory note is written on the eve of my departure for the third time to the Orient, and as I look back over the long ages of India's history and its position in Asia, I can but be struck by the thought of the ever-increasing interest in the East felt by the West, and the growing importance of a knowledge of the great historic nations of the Land of the Dawn. Its population Of three hundred millions is immensely larger than any that a European power has undertaken to rule elsewhere, and it confronts us with problems more stubborn than any we have to solve in America, Australasia, or even Africa. It cannot compete with Canada or Australia in actual size Of territory; still, it is thirty times as large as England, and larger than the continent of Europe without Russia. Its general outline on the map is familiar enough, a great triangle pointing southward into the Indian Ocean, and northward a huge dome shaped mass rising high into Central Asia. Every variety Of climate is to be found in India; for her million and a half Of square miles in clude every height Of land, from the level Of the sea to the tallest mountain peaks on the surface of the globe. There is plenty Of variety among the people, too. Those of the north-west and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
