Book excerpt: The Expert Consultation dealt with pollution problems, mainly in the Latin America and the Caribbean Region, focusing on an assessment of the extent of water pollution by agriculture and related activities; the understanding of the mechanisms of pollution by agriculture and related activities; and policy, legislation and technical guidelines to prevent agricultural water pollution. Twelve case-studies on Latin America and the Caribbean were presented and discussed, as were 12 technical documents prepared by well-known specialists from developed countries. Four discussion groups were formed: Water Quality Assessment and Protection; Agricultural Chemicals and Activities related to Water Pollution; Policy and Legislation; and Prevention of Water Pollution. An Action Statement was drafted providing recommendations for FAO.
