This instrument was used to measure some of the properties of pressure fluctuations over a flat boundary and over water waves and has provided the first reliable pressure data within a turbulent boundary layer. For all observations over a flat boundary the root-mean-square pressure produced by the boundary layer turbulence was about 2.6 times the mean stress. The spectra had a power law behaviour with a mean slope of -1.7 for scales above the peak of the vertical velocity spectrum. Pressure fluctuations were approximately spherical in shape, and propagated downstream at a rate equal to the 'local' mean wind. Pressure measurements near wind generated waves showed a large spectral hump at the wave frequencies. The amplitude of this hump increased, and its vertical rate of decay decreased, as the mean wind speed increased. The phase difference between pressure and waves during active generation was found to be about 135 degree, pressure lagging waves. This did not change vertically"--Abstract.

Modelling of the ABL is crucially dependent for its realism on the surface boundary conditions, and chapters 4 and 5 deal with aerodynamic and energy considerations, with attention to both dry and wet land surfaces and sea. The structure of the clear-sky, thermally stratified ABL is treated in chapter 6, including the convective and stable cases over homogeneous land, the marine ABL and the internal boundary layer at the coastline. Chapter 7 then extends the discussion to the cloudy ABL. This is seen as particularly relevant, since the extensive stratocumulus regions over the subtropical oceans and stratus regions over the Arctic are now identified as key players in the climate system. Since naval operations are often conducted in data sparse regions, single-station assessments of the vertical velocity are necessary. Data to evaluate such assessments were obtained from rawinsondes taken at San Nicolas Island, California. Vertical velocity estimates obtained by vertical integration of the moisture budget equation (Q-method) and by the adiabatic method were used to initialize an APBL 24-hour prediction model. RMS error statistics on predicted inversion height, potential temperature, and specific humidity were computed for the forecasts and compared to the RMS errors of a persistence forecast. Calculation of the vertical velocity by the Q-method showed the most promise. However, no single-station assessment method improved on the persistence forecasts. (Author).

The characteristics of the sea-breeze circulation under varying synoptic-scale patterns are evaluated to determine the modifying roles of boundary layer stability, surface inversion strength, and low-level cloud amount on the resultant time of onset and peak intensity of the Monterey Bay sea-breeze. The primary modifying factor under all synoptic-scale pressure patterns was the boundary layer depth and stability with the differential heating taking longer to destabilize the boundary layer during the Trough regime.

Book excerpt: The marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) and synoptic-scale situation is described using rawinsonde and sea-surface temperature (SST) data collected during the 1986 Frontal Air-Sea Interaction Experiment (FASINEX). The data obtained from 14 February to 09 March 1986 are divided into eight consecutive three-day periods and analyzed. Significant changes in synoptic-scale features and flow patterns occurred during each three-day period due to movement of low pressure systems. MABL changes noted were due primarily to large scale convergence. Thirteen pairs of rawinsonde launches, seven from opposite sides of an oceanic front and six from the same side (five warm, one cold) are compared. The time difference between soundings in each pair did not exceed sixty minutes. Boundary layer height, mixed layer potential temperature and specific humidity differences between paired rawinsonde launches were larger when launches were from opposite sides of the oceanic front. A combination of both shipboard and aircraft data will be necessary to further describe the conditions of the MABL and synoptic-scale situation.

Book excerpt: The evolution of the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) in the vicinity of a sea surface temperature (SST) front is of particular research interest, as the large air-sea temperature and humidity differences at the surface fuels various physical processes inside the boundary layer, causing intense heat and momentum exchange. Such processes make the mesoscale MABL an ocean-drive-atmosphere scenario. Dominant mechanisms, although having been studied intensively, are still yet to be fully understood due to the highly turbulent nature of the MABL. Previous studies often relied on satellite-derived SST and wind fields to investigate boundary layer dynamics, yet the coarse spatial and temporal resolution of such a method limits the understanding of the MABL evolution on shorter timescales. In this thesis, a combination of in situ data and model simulations is used to investigate the MABL response to the SST front in the Gulf Stream region on a timescale of one day or less. Analysis of MABL structure is divided into three categories depending on the background wind strength and its direction relative to the front: cold to warm, parallel/weak, and warm to cold. Two mechanisms identified in previous studies, vertical mixing and thermally induced pressure gradient, and their role in MABL evolution, are studied quantitatively. A comparison between observations and model simulations allows further analysis of the contribution of moist processes that were often considered to be of secondary importance in the past even over the ocean. Results show that vertical mixing is responsible for the majority of the MABL deepening, while the pressure adjustment's effect is more significant when the cross-frontal wind is weak. Sensitivity tests conducted in the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) also show that moisture processes, including surface latent heat, boundary layer transport of moist, and cloud formation, further enhance the mixing that drives MABL changes.

Book excerpt: During the Conference on Air-Sea Interaction in January 1986, it was suggested to me by David Larner of Reidel Press that it may be timely for an updated compendium of air-sea interaction theory to be organized, developed, and published. Many new results were emerging at the time, i.e., results from the MARSEN, MASEX, MILDEX, and TOWARD field projects (among others) were in the process of being reported and/or published. Further, a series of new experiments such as FASINEX and HEXOS were soon to be conducted in which new strides in our knowledge of air-sea fluxes would be made. During the year following the discussions with David Larner, it became apparent that many of the advances in air-sea interaction theory during the 1970s and 1980s were associated with sponsor investments in satellite oceanography and, in particular, remote sensing research. Since ocean surface remote sensing, e.g., scatterometry and SAR, requires intimate knowledge of ocean surface dynamics, advances in remote sensing capabilities required coordinated research in air-sea fluxes, wave state, scattering theory, sensor design, and data exploitation using environmental models. Based on this interplay of disciplines, it was decided that this book be devoted to air sea interaction and remote sensing as multi-disciplinary activities.
