Book excerpt: At a time in our history where the Spanish Mexican roots of this great place we call Texas are being questioned, this third volume of selected essays is most timely. For example, if Texas history begins in 1836 as implied in mainstream Texas history, why then is everything historically old (towns, roads, rivers, mountain ranges, regions, etc.) named in Spanish? Our ancestors' legacy is why we have a right to practice our heritage year-round; not just during Hispanic History Month. Importantly, the network of vibrant communities in New Spain connected by the Camino Real are indeed what first attracted U.S. Anglo Saxon and Northern European immigrants to Texas and the west. In remembering our ancestors, "Aquí todavía estamos, y no nos vamos". (Here we still are and we're not leaving.)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through this second volume of selected essays, the author continues to bring attention to the Spanish Mexican foundation roots of Texas and the Southwest. As with volume 1, this book focuses on a most intriguing question--that is, if mainstream historians tell us that Texas history begins in 1836 with the arrival of Anglo-Saxon and Northern European-descent immigrants from the US, why then is everything historically old (states, towns, roads, rivers, geographical regions, etc.) named in Spanish? Equally, this book is a reminder that Spanish Mexican (and brethren Native American) traditions are the founding components of New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, Colorado, California, and surrounding regions. They are not the result of recent immigration. This vast territory is distinctively Native American in character and gives Spanish land grant heirs and mestizo descendants of Spanish Mexican pioneer founders the right to preserve their rich heritage "on this side of the border."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Slavery in Early Texas, Vol. 2 So ends the first chapter of the history of this institution in Texas. It was settled beyond controversy, by the constitution of 18 36, that Texas should remain open to slavery. There is little evidence of the existence in Texas of any form of the slave trade during the period covered by this paper. No complaint was made by Almonte of the violation of the law of July 13, 1824, and none was mentioned by Alaman as having been made by Teran. Austin's private papers, so far as I know, reveal but one instance. On the occasion of his settle ment with the heirs of Joseph H. Hawkins, his partner in the first colony, Austin presented a statement to their agent, in which he expressly disclaimed all responsibility for the loss of a vast sum in the negro speculation of which John Botts had the management, and definitely asserted that it had nothing to do with the colony.1 It seems that Botts had brought thirty or forty slaves to Texas in 1822 or 182 3, at least some of whom were the property of Hawkins, and after disposing of them had declined to render an account to the heirs.2 These are the only references that I have seen to any kind of specula tion or trade in negroes prior to 1830.
