Book excerpt: This study aimed to investigate pre-service elementary mathematics teachers' perceptions about mathematics problems and their beliefs about problem solving. The sample consisted of 244 senior undergraduate students studying in Elementary Mathematics Teacher Education programs at 5 different universities during the 2005-2006 academic years. The data were collected through a survey developed by the researcher. The results indicated that, in general, the pre-service teachers held positive beliefs about mathematical problem solving. However, they held several traditional beliefs about following predetermined sequence of steps while solving problems and the kind of problems emphasized in the new mathematics curriculum. Besides, they did not value problems that do not cover any topic in the curriculum, involve no number or take a long time to solve. In addition to these, the present study indicated that female and male pre-service teachers did not differ in terms of their beliefs about mathematical problem solving. However, the pre-service teachers' beliefs showed significant difference when the universities attended was concerned.

For this purpose, 511 pre-service teachers who are enrolled in teacher education programs were sampled from five teacher education colleges. In order to examine pre-service teachers' beliefs about mathematics, a survey questionnaire including the MBI (the Mathematics Belief Instrument) was utilized. Based upon the results of the data analyses, Korean pre-service teachers do not strongly agree with the constructivist views on mathematics. The results are probably associated with their experiences from childhood including very competitive college entrance exam. In contrast, regarding mathematical problem solving, Korean pre-service teachers' beliefs were consistent with constructivism. The pre-service teachers' consistent beliefs about problem solving have something to do with their learning experiences within the national curriculum structure. The results of the belief score comparison by demographic variables provided more meaningful interpretations about the pre-service teachers' views on mathematics. In terms of gender, no significant differences was found. However, Korean pre-service teachers' belief scores proved to be different by their year in school. By and large, their MBI scores increased as they spent longer in the teacher education program, but the score change did not show a linear pattern. Three variables (parents' attitudes toward math, private tutoring experiences, and years of attending "cram" schools) were examined to understand the relationship between prior experiences and belief scores. Among those three variables, parents' attitudes toward math were the only one that showed a significant correlation to the belief score. The relationships between the current experience variables and the belief scores showed that only two variables (taking a methods class and purchase of math books) were significantly correlated with the belief scores. In sum, Korean pre-service teachers' beliefs about mathematics are not strongly constructivist. Although they were not severely exposed to "cram" schooling or private tutoring with emphasizes traditional skills for exam preparation, it seems that they did not have enough opportunities to build constructivist beliefs about mathematics. There is a disconnect between their learning experiences and actual behaviors for the construction of constructivist views on mathematics.
