Book excerpt: 'A delightful book ... the perfect companion as you wait for the 8.10 from Hove' Observer After the Beeching cuts of the 1960s, many railways were gradually shut down. Rural communities were isolated and steam trains slowly gave way to diesel and electric traction. But some people were not prepared to let the romance of train travel die. Thanks to their efforts, many lines passed into community ownership and are now booming with new armies of dedicated volunteers. Andrew Martin meets these volunteer enthusiasts, finding out just what it is about preserved railways that makes people so devoted. From the inspiration for Thomas the Tank Engine to John Betjeman's battle against encroaching modernity, Steam Trains Today will take you on a heart-warming journey across Britain from Aviemore to Epping.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ride on a steam train is a popular family outing. More than 100 heritage railways cater for that demand, capturing the spirit of nostalgia while preserving the engines and equipment of past days of rail travel. Their interests even extend to the modern era of 1960's - 70's diesels. Those heritage railways themselves have a long pedigree, back to 1951, when a group of enthusiasts saved the Talyllyn Railway in mid-Wales from closure. They ran this railway as volunteers, out of their love of the little trains and a desire to keep it going. Their example was followed by many more preservation societies who preserved and restored branch lines, country lines and industrial lines for our enjoyment now.Six decades have passed, and we are now beginning to realize what an impressive history the heritage railway movement has. This book traces that history, from the humble beginnings the hopes and ambitions of the pioneers on the different railway projects. There were times of failure and frustration, as some fell by the wayside, but others have made it through times of adversity to become the major heritage businesses of today.

Book excerpt: A Pageant of British Steam is a book honouring the position to which Britains Heritage Steam Railways has now arrived.Preservation has become the word for the achievements of the thousands of volunteers who have given up a mass of time to advance the saving of this section of Britains history. Most of these people are the likely descendants of our Industrial Revolution where the skills have never been forgotten. The book shows in fine color photography the wonderful selection of locomotives and rolling stock running on our preserved lines all across the country. Text highlights the historical background of railway history from the earliest times right through to the end of steam in the nineteen sixties.Geoff Swaine has emerged to be a leader in this field of photography, be it lineside or heritage working steam. His style is one of his own, where the subject leaps from the page, usually bathed in fine sunlight with blue sky above.Informative captions accompany every picture not only targeting the novice or newcomer to the subject, but the experienced rail enthusiast will also be pleased to learn a thing or two. This book strongly features the historical background as well as catching some of the people who now revel in dressing the part to prove their love of this enthralling and popular subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling book centers on the Great Central Railways early history, focusing particularly on its drive to reach London. It follows the subsequent fortunes of the London Extension right up until its closure, and into the preservation era, examining the remarkable achievements of hundreds of enthusiasts and their continuing struggle to fulfill the aspirations of those 1969 visionaries. In 1899 the Great Central Railway opened a new main line between Nottinghamshire and London. It was built to the highest of standards; civil and mechanical engineers able to benefit from the experience of over fifty years of British railway construction. It was a glorious achievement. Yet, despite incorporating some of the best facilities to enable it to operate in a more efficient way than its older rivals, it had a short working life compared to its contemporaries. By the end of the 1960s, most of it had closed. However, ironically, that abandonment by the state-owned British Railways presented an independent and enterprising group of railway enthusiasts with a unique opportunity to operate their own main line with their own engines. In 1969 the Main Line Preservation Group was formed with a vision to re-create a fully functioning, double track, steam-worked main line between Nottingham and Leicester. This book explores the journey, development and changes of the Great Central Railway and is a fantastic guide to how the railway industry has changed over time.

The use of new and second hand former main line locomotives, was once a widespread aspect of the railways of Britain. This volume covers many of the once numerous manufacturers who constructed steam locomotives for industry and contractors from the 19th to the mid 20th centuries. David Mather has spent many years researching and collecting photographs across Britain, of most of the different locomotive types that once worked in industry. This book is designed to be both a record of these various manufacturers and a useful guide to those researching and modelling industrial steam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presented in chronological order, the last locomotive class featured in this volume of 60 classic engines is the British Railways standard 2-10-0 9F freight class which included the Evening Star, the last steam locomotive built by British Railways. The Evening Star, completed in 1960, represented the culmination of steam-locomotive evolution and design, dating back a century and a half. As soon as it was built, the Evening Star was ear-marked for preservation as part of the National Collection and was appropriately finished in lined Brunswick green with a copper capped chimney and brass fittings, quite resplendent when compared to the utilitarian unlined black of its nameless class mates. Withdrawn in 1965, the Evening Star had a very short working life in common with most of the other standard classes included in the 15,000 engines scrapped by British Railways in the decade up to 1968. The wholesale scrapping of steam was only part of the radical transformation that took place on Britain's railways in the 10 years up to 1970 and it was probably the suddenness of that change and nostalgia for the cosy familiarity of railways largely unchanged over the preceding 50 years that provided the impetus for Britain's thriving railway heritage industry. As a tribute to the success of that preservation industry, representatives of virtually all the 60 engines included in this book, can still be seen, whether working on heritage railways, as static exhibits in museums or even running on mainline specials.A chronological record the engines featured in this book are important for either technological innovation or else simple workmanlike efficiency such as the ubiquitous 0-6-0 freight engines built in their thousands and confirming their durability by remaining in service for 50, 60 or even, in some cases, 70 years.
