Book Synopsis Early Childhood Assessment by : National Research Council
Download or read book Early Childhood Assessment written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-12-21 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assessment of young children's development and learning has recently taken on new importance. Private and government organizations are developing programs to enhance the school readiness of all young children, especially children from economically disadvantaged homes and communities and children with special needs. Well-planned and effective assessment can inform teaching and program improvement, and contribute to better outcomes for children. This book affirms that assessments can make crucial contributions to the improvement of children's well-being, but only if they are well designed, implemented effectively, developed in the context of systematic planning, and are interpreted and used appropriately. Otherwise, assessment of children and programs can have negative consequences for both. The value of assessments therefore requires fundamental attention to their purpose and the design of the larger systems in which they are used. Early Childhood Assessment addresses these issues by identifying the important outcomes for children from birth to age 5 and the quality and purposes of different techniques and instruments for developmental assessments.

This book was released on 2003-01-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Preschool COR-Validated, Research-Based Assessment for Your Preschool, Head Start, or Home-Based Program Informative and User-Friendly! The Preschool COR is an observational assessment tool for children aged 21/2 to 6 years. It is designed to measure childrenas progress in all early childhood programs (including but not limited to those using the High/Scope educational approach). It looks at 32 dimensions of learning in six broad categories critical for school success: Initiative, Social Relations, Creative Representation, Movement and Music, Language and Literacy, and Mathematics and Science. Teaching staff gather information to complete the COR in the course of everyday program activities, so COR assessment is seamlessly integrated with early childhood teaching and planning. The results provide detailed information on each childas development, as well as a variety of group reports analyzing progress for various audiences. The Preschool COR Kit provides the materials needed for assessment, curriculum planning, and reporting to parents for a group of 25 children. The second edition of the Preschool COR has been revised and expanded to better meet the needs of early childhood educators for meaningful assessment directly tied to teaching and curriculum planning. While the basic process of using the Preschool COR has not changed (those already using COR assessment will make a smooth and easy transition to this new version), materials have been added to make it easier to collect information on each child, to inform parents about the COR process, and to plan teaching strategies around COR results. Developmental indicators have been revised to provide closer alignment with the Head Start Child Outcomes Framework and the High/Scope key experiences.

Book Synopsis High/scope Child Observation Record (cor) For Infants And Toddlers by : High Scope
Download or read book High/scope Child Observation Record (cor) For Infants And Toddlers written by High Scope and published by Wadsworth Publishing Company. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meaningful assessment for very young children in child care settings is possible with the Child Observation Record (COR) for Infants and Toddlers. The Infant-Toddler COR looks at the whole child from the ages of 6 weeks to 3 years. Unlike diagnostic instruments that focus narrowly on problems and deficits, the COR focuses on childrenÂ's strengths. By providing a complete and accurate picture of each infantÂ's or toddlerÂ's developing abilities, the COR helps caregivers do a better job of supporting the development of individual children and of planning for the group as a whole. The COR is observation based. Information for completing the COR is gathered by those who know children best-their caregivers and parents. Adults record COR observations as they care for, play with, and attend to children rather than during artificial testing situations. Individuals from outside the program may also use the COR for research or evaluation purposes. The kit contains all the necessary materials for a yearÂ's observational assessment of up to 12 children. This observational tool (1) Assesses broad areas of child development rather than physical or language milestones or deficits only. (2) Looks at childrenÂ's progress in six key areas: sense of self; social relations; creative representation; movement; communication and language; exploration and early logic. (3) Helps early childhood staff get to know each child better and, based on this, to plan for materials, experiences, and routines that are attuned to each childÂ's abilities and needs. (4) Is based on observations conducted over a period of several months during the normal activities of the program; its use does not alter or disrupt the programÂ's routine in any way. (5) Educates caregivers about child development. (6) Provides a framework for communicating with parents about each childÂ's developmental needs. (7) Provides forms for summarizing the progress of individual children and the group.
Book Synopsis Child Observation Record (Cor) for Ages 2 1/2 - 6 CD-ROM for Windows by : High Scope
Download or read book Child Observation Record (Cor) for Ages 2 1/2 - 6 CD-ROM for Windows written by High Scope and published by Delmar Thomson Learning. This book was released on 2003-01-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Preschool COR for CD-ROM Kit, Second Edition, can be used as an alternative to the printed version of the Preschool COR, Second Edition. Several helpful features distinguish the COR software from the paper-and-pencil versions of COR forms. The software makes it easy for the user to update and change pieces of information recorded in the COR computerized system. When a new piece of information is available or a modification is needed in the information already stored in the program, the user need only enter the new information once, and the program will automatically update all relevant records, charts, graphs, and reports. The valuable time program staff spend in viewing records for assessment, program planning, teacher/observer self-assessment, and report writing is reduced considerable by the software's ability to call up the necessary information quickly and in any order that is needed. Another unique feature of the software is its ability to automatically compile and analyze COR ratings both for individual children and for the group, and then to present these findings in both graph and narrative form. For effective assessment with Preschool COR for CD-ROM Kit, the teacher/observer will also need many of the other materials included in the Preschool COR Kit, specifically the Preschool COR Observation Items, User Guide, What's Next? Planning Children's Activities Around Preschool COR Observations, Parent Guides, Preschool COR Poster, High/Scope Preschool Key Experiences Poster, COR Category Tabs. These are all contained in the COR for CD-ROM Kit.
Book Synopsis Observing and Recording the Behavior of Young Children, 6th Edition by : Virginia Stern
Download or read book Observing and Recording the Behavior of Young Children, 6th Edition written by Virginia Stern and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Sixth Edition of their classic text, the authors reiterate the critical importance of observing and recording the behaviour of young children, especially in the current atmosphere of accountability and testing. In addition, because children with special needs are now widely included in a majority of early childhood classrooms, they have completely rewritten a chapter to focus more broadly on observing behaviours that may be viewed as disquieting. Designed to help teachers better understand children's behaviour, the book outlines methods for recordkeeping that provide a realistic picture of each child's interactions and experiences in the classroom. Numerous examples of teachers' observations of children from birth to age 8 enrich this work and make it accessible, practical, and enjoyable to read. With over 130,000 copies in print, this valuable resource for pre- and inservice educators features: fresh information about how children think and learn, how their language develops, and how their families, their culture, and their environment influence and help to shape them; observations that reflect the increasingly diverse population in contemporary early childhood classrooms; and the imperative for teachers to widen their lens in order to meet the needs of young children with a range of developmental capacities, abilities, and behaviours.
Book Synopsis The Use of the Child Observation Record as a Tool for Predicting Early Literacy Skills in Preschool Children by : Christopher R. Singer
Download or read book The Use of the Child Observation Record as a Tool for Predicting Early Literacy Skills in Preschool Children written by Christopher R. Singer and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Reading is an important part of a child's schooling. Identifying students with literacy difficulties early in the academic process can provide them with early intervention services to keep them from falling behind. The use of an observational assessment when dealing with preschoolers can yield vital information to help identify children who may be at risk for developing reading difficulties. The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) is a standardized assessment currently used to identify and evaluate students' reading abilities. The Child Observation Record (COR) is a preschool assessment tool used to assess school readiness skills in children. This research seeks to extend the work of Sekino & Fantuzzo (2005) by exploring the correlation between the COR and DIBELS Letter Naming Fluency (LNF) and Oral Reading Fluency (ORF). Participants in the study consisted of 299 students given these assessments in their schooling. Bivariate correlations and linear regressions were used to examine the relationship between the four COR dimensions and the DIBELS LNF and ORF first grade scores."--Abstract.

Book Synopsis Learning and Teaching Early Math by : Douglas H. Clements
Download or read book Learning and Teaching Early Math written by Douglas H. Clements and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important new book for pre- and in-service teachers, early math experts Douglas Clements and Julie Sarama show how "learning trajectories" help teachers become more effective professionals. By opening up new windows to seeing young children and the inherent delight and curiosity behind their mathematical reasoning, learning trajectories ultimately make teaching more joyous. They help teachers understand the varying level of knowledge and thinking of their classes and the individuals within them as key in serving the needs of all children. In straightforward, no-nonsense language, this book summarizes what is known about how children learn mathematics, and how to build on what they know to realize more effective teaching practice. It will help teachers understand the learning trajectories of early mathematics and become quintessential professionals.
