Book excerpt: The CSBS™ Record Forms and Caregiver Questionnaires, sold in packages for easy re-ordering, are assessment forms for the Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales (CSBS™), one of the best measures of early communication in children 8–24 months (or up to 72 months if developmental delays are present). The norm-referenced, standardized CSBS™ uses parent interviews and naturalistic sampling procedures to collect crucial information — not just on language skills but also on often-overlooked communicative behaviors like communicative functions, gestures, rate of communicating, positive affect, and gaze shifts. CSBS™ takes just 50–75 minutes for child assessment and 60–75 minutes for in-depth scoring. Backed by technical data, CSBS™ is compatible with most developmental curricula in use today. A package of CSBS™ Record Forms and Caregiver Quesionnaires includes: 25 Caregiver Questionnaires: Caregivers complete this 15-minute qualitative questionnaire to provide background information. Their responses provide a baseline that helps professionals evaluate a child's performance. 25 Behavior Sample Record Forms: Data from the CSBS™ behavior sample is tallied on this form and converted to scores on 22 five-point scales. 2 Outline Cards: These reference cards outline sampling procedures step by step and give directions for scoring. Available separately or as part of the CSBS™ Complete Kit are the other materials required to conduct a CSBS™ assessment. These forms are part of CSBS™, a norm-referenced, standardized tool that uses parent interview and direct observation to assess infants, toddlers, and preschoolers at risk for communication delays and impairments. With 22 rating scales that accurately survey children's language skills and symbolic development, CSBS is backed by technical data and compatible with most developmental curricula in use today. This product is sold in a package of 25. Learn more about the whole CSBS system.

Book excerpt: That children are capable of pathology—not only such conditions as ADHD and learning disabilities, but also such "adult" disorders as anxiety and depression—stands as a defining moment in psychology’s recent history. Within this recognition is the understanding that the social skills deficits that accompany these disorders must be targeted for assessment and treatment to ensure optimal functioning in school, with peers, and in later transitions to puberty and adulthood. Social Behavior and Skills in Children cuts across disciplinary lines to clarify the scope of assessment options and interventions for a wide range of disorders. A panel of leading scholars reviews current research, discusses social deficits unique to specific disorders, and identifies evidence-based best practices in one authoritative, approachable reference. This volume: Discusses theoretical models of social skills as they relate to assessment and treatment. Analyzes the etiology of social behavior problems in children and the relation between these problems and psychopathology. Reviews 48 norm-referenced measures of social skills in children. Examines the range of evidence-based social skills interventions. Addresses challenging behaviors, such as aggression and self-injury. Focuses on specific conditions, including developmental disabilities, conduct disorders, ADHD, chronic medical illness, depression, anxiety, and severe psychopathology. Social Behavior and Skills in Children is an essential reference for university libraries as well as a must-have volume for researchers, graduate students, and clinicians in child, and school psychology, special education, and other related fields.

Book excerpt: Behavioral, Social, and Emotional Assessment of Children and Adolescents, Second Edition was written to provide a comprehensive foundation for conducting clinical assessment of child and adolescent social-emotional behavior in a practical, scientific, and culturally appropriate manner. It is divided into two major sections. Part I includes eight chapters that provide a general foundation for assessment practice. These chapters include coverage of basic professional and ethical issues, classification and diagnostic problems, and six primary assessment methods, which are presented in detail. Part II includes six chapters on applications for assessing specific social-emotional behavior domains, including internalizing and externalizing problems, social skills and peer relations, young children, and diverse cultural groups. Together, these two sections provide a framework for a model of assessment that is practical, flexible, sensitive to specific needs, and empirically sound. Changes in the second edition of this book include: increased coverage of the practice of functional behavior assessment; updated test reviews; reviews of new assessment instruments; updated information on legal and ethical issues; updated information on assessment and cultural diversity; and a handy appendix with contact information for all publishers of instruments discussed in the book, including Web site addresses. To the greatest extent possible, this book weaves together the most recent research evidence and common application issues. It is specifically relevant to practitioners and researchers in the fields of school psychology and child clinical psychology, but will also be of interest to those in related disciplines, such as counseling, social work, child psychiatry, and special education.

Book excerpt: Children’s display of unacceptable behavior in the school setting, school violence, academic underachievement, and school failure represent a cluster of problems that touches all aspects of society. Children with learning and behavior problems are much more likely to be un- ployed, exhibit significant emotional and behavior disorders in adulthood, as well as become incarcerated. For example, by adolescence, children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity D- order are more likely to be retained a grade, drop out of school, have contact with the law, or fair worse along a number of dimensions than their unaffected siblings (Barkely, 1998). Identification, assessment, and treatment of children with externalizing behavior problems and learningdisabilities is critical to optimizing development and prevention of relatively - tractable behavioral and emotional problems in adulthood. For example, poor interpersonal problem solving and social skills excesses and deficits are strongly associated with poor o- come in adolescence and adulthood. The school is where children learn essential academic, social, and impulse control skills that allow them to function effectively in later years. School is where problems in these areas can be most easily identified and addressed. The purpose of this book is to provide an overview of assessment practices for evaluating children’s externalizing behavior problems exhibited in the school environment. Reviews of approximately 100 assessment devices for measuring children’s externalizing problems are included. Instruments include structured interviews, rating scales, and observational methods.
