Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 22 March 1979, an instrumented MC-130E for cloud physics measurements by AFGL made a series of 8-min sampling passes at altitudes ranging from 100 to 1000 ft above the ocean surface off the coast of Washington. The flight profile was similar to that flown by the same aircraft on 10 July 1978 off the coast of California (AFGL-TR-79-0013). Winds were light, and the visibility generally was 7 miles or greater. Varying numbers of particles were detected in the 2 to 22 micrometer range at all levels. The number of particules was fairly constant with altitude; liquid water content (LWC) was about 0.001 g/cu m at all levels. This was in contrast to the 10 July 1978 flight, where LWC varied much more, both with height and location. The differences between the two flights are attributed to the lower windspeeds and the resultant fewer whitecaps observed on this second flight. (Author).

Book Synopsis Techniques for Measuring Liquid Water Content Along a Trajectory by : Rosemary M. Dyer
Download or read book Techniques for Measuring Liquid Water Content Along a Trajectory written by Rosemary M. Dyer and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The standard procedure for estimating the point value of liquid water content (M) along the reentry path of a ballistic missile is to use a radar derived value of radar reflectivity factor (Z), with the M to Z relation obtained from aircraft measurements of the particle spectrum. This report contains descriptions of the various techniques used to make the radar and aircraft data compatible. The results of various methods to predict the liquid water content values are compared with aircraft measured values. The extrapolation of instrumentally truncated aircraft measurements to include the entire range of particle sizes is treated in Section 1. Section 2 contains a discussion of the method of deriving nominal M-Z relations, applies the method to data acquired at Kwajalein Missile Range, and provides M-Z relations for rain, small snow, large snow, and bullet rosettes. The introduction of the factor 'k' to convert from aircraft measurements to radar derived values is also discussed in Section 2. The relationship of k with altitude and temperature for data from Kwajalein and Wallops Island is covered in Section 3. Finally, Section 4 contains a determination of the accuracy to which liquid water content can be estimated from climatological storm data for moderate to heavy stratiform winter storms at Wallops Island. The results of Section 4 demonstrate that situations which deviate significantly from climatological averages still require time- specific M-Z relations derived from simultaneous aircraft-radar measurements.
Book Synopsis Clouds Their Formation, Optical Properties, And Effects by : Peter Hobbs
Download or read book Clouds Their Formation, Optical Properties, And Effects written by Peter Hobbs and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clouds: Their Formation, Optical Properties, and Effects deals with the formation of clouds as well as the theoretical and experimental aspects of their microphysical and optical properties. Discussions are grouped under the headings of structure of clouds, interaction of passive radiation with clouds, and interaction of active radiation with clouds. This book is organized into three sections and has 11 chapters. After analyzing the spatial and temporal scales involved in the formation and organization of clouds and precipitation, this text examines the microphysical measurement techniques used in probing the microstructure of clouds. The reader is then methodically introduced to the microstructure of atmospheric clouds and precipitation; the formation and structure of fog; and basic shortwave characteristics of “ideal clouds. The temporal behavior of clouds and their interaction with the radiation field are considered, along with the possible effects of cloud models in general circulation studies. The remaining chapters explore the light scattering properties of ice crystals and the radiative characteristics of ice clouds; the laser measurements in clouds; the transmission and reflectivity of ice clouds by active probing; and the theory of multiple scattering of laser beams in clouds. The book concludes by presenting the measurements of the temporal and spatial spreading of a blue-green pulse through clouds and fogs as a function of optical thickness and receiver field-of-view. This text will be helpful to advanced researchers and program managers in terms of reviewing the state of the art and identifying those areas requiring further research efforts.
