Book Synopsis Archaeology, Annales, and Ethnohistory by : A. Bernard Knapp
Download or read book Archaeology, Annales, and Ethnohistory written by A. Bernard Knapp and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-04-16 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection considers the relevance of the Annales 'school' for archaeology. The Annales movement regarded orthodox history as too much concerned with events, too narrowly political, too narrative in form and too isolated from neighbouring disciplines. Annalistes attempted to construct a 'total' history, dealing with a wide range of human activity, and combining divergent material, documentary, and theoretical approaches to the past. Annales-oriented research utilizes the techniques and tools of various ancillary fields, and integrates temporal, spatial, material and behavioural analyses. Such an approach is obviously attractive to archaeologists, for even though they deal with material data rather than social facts, they are just as much as historians interested in understanding social, economic and political factors such as power and dominance, conflict, exchange and other human activities. Three introductory essays consider the relationship between Annales methodology and current archaeological theory. Case studies draw upon methodological variations of the multifaceted Annales approach. The volume concludes with two overviews, one historical and the other archaeological.

Book Synopsis World Perspectives in Education by : Edmund J. King
Download or read book World Perspectives in Education written by Edmund J. King and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1962. In this book the main problems of contemporary education are illustrated with fresh material from many countries and assessed in a context of rapid change in technology, society, and politics. Familiar educational concerns are carefully considered; but the altered status of schools, teachers and homes in relation to competing influences receives particular attention. Recent reforms in the Soviet Union, and the development of education in Asia and Africa, are assessed vis-a-vis topical questions and proposals in Great Britain, the United States, and several Western European countries. The book is therefore useful both for ‘problem' studies in comparative education, and for an up-to-date review of principles and practices in a critically formative period. It is also intended to present a study of education that will be widely educative and contribute to world understanding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than ten years ago, the first genetically modified foods took their place on the shelves of American supermarkets. But while American consumers remained blissfully unconcerned with the new products that suddenly filled their kitchens, Europeans were much more wary of these “Frankenfoods.” When famine struck Africa in 2002, several nations refused shipments of genetically modified foods, fueling a controversy that put the issue on the world's political agenda for good. In Food Fray, esteemed molecular biologist Dr. Lisa H. Weasel brings readers into the center of this debate, capturing the real-life experiences of the scientists, farmers, policymakers and grassroots activists on the front lines. Here she combines solid scientific knowledge and a gripping narrative to tell the real story behind the headlines and the hype. Seminal and cutting-edge, Food Fray enlightens and informs and will allow readers to make up their own minds about one of the most important issues facing us today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within higher education, world-class universities are commonly regarded as elite research universities and play a critical role in developing a nation’s competitiveness in the global knowledge economy. An increasing number of countries, regions and higher education institutions in different parts of the world have joined the same battle for academic excellence. While emerging countries and their universities make every effort to enhance their capacity and boost their research performance, the academic superpowers endeavour to maintain - if not further improve- their global positions. “Building World-Class Universities: Different Approaches to a Shared Goal” intends to provide an in-depth picture of different approaches in pursuit of the shared goal of developing academic excellence, and to reflect the current trends in this field. Divided into three parts, the book covers: • building world-class universities from a national/regional perspective, • managing world-class universities from an institutional perspective, and • measuring world-class universities from a ranking/indicator perspective. This book not only represents a contribution to the ongoing discussion on the topic of building world-class universities, but can be seen as a continuation of the previous three volumes on this topic - “World-Class Universities and Ranking: Aiming beyond Status”, “The World-Class University as Part of a New Higher Education Paradigm: From Institutional Qualities to Systemic Excellence”, and “Paths to a World-Class University: Lessons from Practices and Experiences”. All four books will be useful readings for students and academics in higher education generally, in addition to policy makers and informed practioners.d practitioners
