Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preparatory History of the United States This text-book, prepared in accordance with the latest conclusions of the eminent historians of America, has been arranged in catechetical form, because that was deemed the best for youthful pupils. The advantage of the narrative form, however, is also secured by the summary, which follows each lesson, and serves to impress the principal events treated therein upon the pupil's mind. The answers are short and in language intelligible to the most youthful student; the geographical definitions at the beginning of every lesson have been added at the suggestion of an experienced and successful teacher of history, and it has been thought well to add to these a brief outline of the great authors from whom quotations are made. The prominent part which Catholics have had in the history of our country has been amply and justly treated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States This textbook is based on the plan of study recommended for the seventh and eighth grades by the Committee Of Eight Of the American Historical Association. The work for the sixth grade has been given in a shorter book, entitled Introductory American History. About two-thirds Of that book concern the beginnings in Great Britain and Europe of the civilization which the people of the United States share with other peoples Of European race. The remainder contains descriptions Of the discoveries and early settlements of America, principally in the sixteenth century. This volume for the upper grades Opens with a chapter which repeats briefly the story of early discovery and settlement. The chapter may be used as a review in those schools which use the Introductory American History. Teachers who do not use that book will find in the chapter the essential facts of the period. American history is so rich and varied that the most serious ques tion which confronts the authors Of a textbook is that of selection and emphasis. If space is to be found for adequate treat ment Of the most characteristic features of our national develop ment, especially Of those within the comprehension Of the pupil Of the seventh or eighth grade, certain phases Of the political and military history Of the country must be reserved for later study. These Reviews, besides the teacher's notes and the outlines of his lectures, contain also the questions given at forty examinations by the New York State Education Department. These examinations popularly known as the Regents Examinations, cover the New York High School course in that particular subject. These questions, having been prepared under the supervision of the New York State Education Department represent the most thoughtful view of what an examination in that subject should contain. They are the best test of a student's knowledge and an invaluable aid to students preparing for an examination. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Naval History of the United States, Vol. 1 Indians, unused to warfare on the water, rushed upon deck. Six leaped into the sea, and were drowned; the rest retreated again into the cabin. Gallop then prepared to repeat his ramming manoeuvre. This time, to make the blow more effective, he lashed his anchor to the bow, so that the sharp flukes protruded; thus extemporizing an iron-clad ram more than two hundred years before naval men thought Of using one. Thus provided, the second blow of the sloop was more terrible than the first. The sharp fluke of the anchor crashed through the side of the pinnace, and the two vessels hung tightly together. Gallop then began to double-load his duck-guns, and fire through the Sides of the pinnace; but, finding that the enemy was not to be dislodged in this way, he broke his vessel loose, and again made for the windward, preparatory to a third blow. As the sloop drew Off, four or five more Indians rushed from the cabin of the pinnace, and leaped overboard, but Shared the fate of their predecessors, being far from land. Gallop then came about, and for the third time bore down upon his adversary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American History Not a great deal depends upon the form of notation used in an outline, provided the form adopted is consistently followed, and provided further that it may be easily comprehended and followed by the pupil Like the use of capital letters, punctuation, inden-tion-of paragraphs, and so forth, the use of indention and notation in an outline is for purposes of mental economy. When, because of proper indention, a simple and logical notation, and a clear, definite, and suggestive wording in an historical outline, the student is enabled in the shortest possible time to form a full and correct mental connection between any given subject and the larger subject or subjects of which it is a part, the author of an outline has gone as far as possible in assisting the student's thought process. The form of notation which it has seemed best to adopt for this outline is the following: Capital let ters, capital letters in parentheses, Roman numerals, Roman numerals in parentheses, Arabic numerals, Arabic numerals in parentheses, small Roman numerals, small Roman numerals in parentheses, small letters, and small letters in parentheses. Thus: A, (a), I, (i), I, (i), i, (i) a, (a). The letters are used only where there are so few coordinate parts as not to be confusing. The author of this outline has succeeded best with this method. Another problem in outlining a course in history for class work is that of properly combining period. Or chronological analysis with subject or movement analysis. By an historical movement I mean a series of historical facts or events relating to the same subject and linked together by cause and effect: such, for in stance, as, Territorial Expansion of the United States from 1789 to the Present. By a period of history is meant a certain block of time within which a particular movement or tendency seems to predominate. The almost exclusive use of movement analysis would be preferable were the aim of the course in American history solely to reorganize and interpret facts and events already familiar to the student. But since no such familiarity exists among our students at the beginning of the course, we are {compelled to analyze the general progress of history much in the way that it actually occurred. In this outline, there fore, I have attempted, while following the development of history by periods, to adhere as much as possible to movement analysis. For this reason, I have not always followed the topical order of treatment in any textbook. Indeed, this is unnecessary either in an outline or in the recitation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Class of 1912, Yale College, Vol. 1 The Class of 1912 has completed its preparatory life - the first stage in every man's career. Thus far we have traveled about the same path as that taken by all the sons of Yale preceding us. We have been about as green as previous Freshmen and attained the dignity and honor of previous Seniors. Our future life has been fortified by failures, experienced and powerfully strengthened by ties of friendship which time can never rend asunder. F rom this moment our paths separate as each man strives to. Gain the goal of his ambi tion. What success we of 1912 are to attain as individuals and what permanent imprint we are to leave upon the world to distinguish us from other classes, the next forty years will determine. As time progresses may each one of us warm both hands before the fire of life, and further, may it be said of us as Lincoln wished it might be said of him, that he plucked a weed and planted a flower, where he thought a flower would grow. The aggregate num ber of students in attendance has been 755, distributed as follows in the Preparatory School, 95; in the Columbian College, 66; in the Corcoran Scientific School, 110; in the Medical School, 155 in the School of Dentistry, 17; in the Law School, 312. I have nothing but commendation to report with regard to the administration of the Preparatory School under the conduct of its faithful Principal, Prof. Montague, and of his faithful assist ants. The number of pupils is slightly less than during the last year, but not for any want of zeal in its corps of instructors.
