The chapters in this book are divided into three sections: preimplantation genetic testing, traditional prenatal testing, and non-invasive prenatal testing. This book covers topics such as molecular testing for preimplantation genetic diagnosis of single gene disorders; DNA extraction from various types of prenatal specimens; prenatal diagnosis of cystic fibrosis and Tay-Sachs disease; chromosomal SNP microarrays; and isolation of cell-free DNA from maternal plasma. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Practical and thorough, Prenatal Diagnosis, Second Edition is a valuable resource for any researcher interested in reproducing these techniques in their clinical laboratories.

Now, maternal administration of dexamethasone to prevent genital virilization can be restricted to pregnancies with affected female fetuses earlier in gestation. If the fetus were male, affected with CAH or not, treatment could cease, and would be resumed after birth if the neonate proved to be affected. Although CVS could safely be performed at 10 weeks’ gestation, treatment still had to begin before fetal gender and genotype was known.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive volume covers all aspects of the revolution in prenatal diagnosis brought about by the introduction of non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), which primarily relies on the detection of free fetal DNA circulating in maternal blood from the early stages of pregnancy. The book explores the potential of NIPT to provide full genome screening of the fetus and identify many common or rare disorders. The counseling process, as well as the limitations and pitfalls of various techniques used to perform NIPT, are described, evaluated, and critically discussed by renowned international experts. The book also compares the new technology with more conventional tests, preimplantation diagnosis, and the invasive procedures currently in use. This book will be a valuable resource for gynecologists, obstetricians, geneticists, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, pathologists, neonatologists, reproductive medicine specialists, midwives, and anyone interested in prenatal genetic diagnosis.

Book excerpt: Prenatal and preimplantation testing technologies have offered unprecedented access to information about the genetic and congenital makeup of our prospective progeny. Future developments such as preconception testing, non-intrusive prenatal testing and more extensive preimplantation testing promise to increase that access further still. The result may be greater reproductive choice, but it also increases the burden on women and men to avail themselves of these technologies in order to avoid having a child with a disability. The overwhelming question for legislators has been whether and, if so, how to regulate the use of these technologies in the face of compelling but seemingly contradictory claims about the advancement of reproductive choice and the dangers of eugenic or discriminatory effects. This book examines the evolution of this legislative oversight across a number of jurisdictions and explores the tensions and ambiguities that inform these laws.

Book excerpt: Yury Verlinskyand Anver Kuliev Reproductive Genetics Institute, Illinois Masonic Medical Center, 836 W. Wellington chicago, IL 60657 Although introduction of a first trimester prenatal diagnosis by chorionic viIIus sampling (CVS) has considerably improved the possibility for prevention of genetic diseases, it requires a selective abortion in case of an affected fetus. Following the direction of an earlier prenatal diagnosis and to avoid the need for abortion, preimplantation genetic diagnosis has been initiated based on polar body removal and pre-embryo biopsy. The First International symposium on Preimplantation Genetics, Chicago, September 17-19, 1990, was organized to explore these important developments, to review the state of knowledge in the field, and to address existing problems to be solved for developing and improving current approaches for preimplantation diagnosis of genetic disorders. A growing interest in the subject was obvious from the wide attendance of the meeting: over 250 scientists from 19 countries participated. This was the first attempt to put together the advances in different areas of basic and applied research relevant to Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis, with the multidisciplinary scientific program including the sessions on embryology, micromanipulation and biopsy, genetic analysis of gametes and pre-embryos, IVF, gene expression and gene therapy, and ethical and legal issues. The deliberations of the Symposium presented in the above mentioned sessions, which comprise the contents of correspond ing sections of the Proceedings, open a newarea in medical research based on the interaction of IVF and New Genetics.

Book excerpt: Genetic Disorders and the Fetus: Diagnosis, Prevention and Treatment, Seventh Edition is the eagerly awaited new edition of the discipline-leading text that has been at the forefront of diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of fetal genetic disorders for over 36 years. The seventh edition continues the long-established tradition of excellence that has become synonymous with this text. The book builds on the foundations of preconception and prenatal genetic counseling and the original pillars of prenatal diagnosis while also providing authoritative coverage of exciting developments in non-invasive genetic testing and rapidly developing molecular techniques, including microarray analysis and next generation sequencing, that are revolutionizing the field. Chapters are once again authored by internationally recognized authorities in the field of prenatal diagnosis. The editors have added three entirely new chapters to this edition to complement the complete revision of existing content. The three new chapters focus on non-invasive prenatal screening, placental genetics, and the psychology of prenatal and perinatal grief. The broad-ranging coverage and international scope will ensure that the new edition maintains its role as the major repository for information on all aspects of prenatal diagnosis. The editors have brought together an invaluable collection of evidence-based facts bolstered by knowledge and decades of experience in the field. Genetic Disorders and the Fetus: Diagnosis, Prevention and Treatment, 7th Edition is a timely update to this world-leading text.
