Book excerpt: Excerpt from Premium List and Regulations of the Great State Fair of North Carolina: Held by the North Carolina Agricultural Society North Carolina is one of the greatest states in the Union and its people are rapidly making their impress in all lines of endeavor. Most of the following facts are taken from the Progressive Farmer of Raleigh, N. C, and are made On the authority of the State Agricultural Department - the other facts are matters of common knowledge to the people of the State. North Carolina in 1910 was the twenty-second state in value of Agricultural Products. In 1919 she was fourth in the Union, and second only to the enormous state of Texas in the South. In 1910 the crop value of the State was $140,000,000, in 1919 it was $683,000,000, the value of the tobacco crop alone being $90,000,000. It is astonishing how the farmers are buying trucks, tractors, improved farm implements, electric lighting outfits and the comforts and luxuries of home and farm. There is now a state-wide compulsory minimum school term of six months for every child, white and black. Many counties have established farm life schools. North Carolina is probably the only State in the Union with a rural moving picture service, amusing the people and teaching them the laws of sanitation and health, under the Educational Department of the State. The State pays half and the County half and the people go free. Credit Unions flourish all over the State under a model system. In 1914 there were 11, 000 automobiles in the State, in July 1920 there were approximately 115,000. Durham County has the largest tobacco factories and hosiery mills in the world; the furniture factories of High Point ship 28 carloads of furniture every day in the year. Gaston County has 94 cotton mills, probably more than any other county in the world. The swine-breeding industry is growing every day and the cattle industry of Western North Carolina is destined to be a source of untold wealth. Hundreds of blooded sires are being introduced, and the farmer is learning that "blood will tell." The Secret Of This Prosperity, Almost Beyond Belief, Is Diversification Of Crops And Industries. The North Carolina State Fair during its whole history of fifty-nine years has encouraged this diversification, and this bringing in of new methods, and new ideas and adding them to the best of the home methods and ideas. This Society deserves the support of every Carolinian for what it has done for the State, and it invites his aid and cooperation, and the aid and help of any man who has something good to show to people who have the money to buy and the mental grasp to know a good thing when they see it. Three Thousand Dollars have been added to the premiums on Live Stock. A new Sheep Barn is being erected, and many improvements made for the handling of the Live Stock Exhibits. One Thousand Dollars have been added to the already large premiums on Agricultural Products, including a special premium on Wake County farm exhibits, given by the County Com.missioners and others. Premiums are net no deduction for entry fee. The State Fair numbers among its directors and superintendents men and women cf the State Department of Agriculture, the United States and State Extension Services, and the State Director of Home Economics, and the County Demonstration Agents. We have probably more experts of wide fame in their several lines of work than any other fair in this country can number in its personnel. This is a guarantee of the high-class of exhibits shown and of the fair and judicious handling of exhibits and exhibitors. The Society wishes to express to each and all of these its very great thanks for untiring assistance and cooperation. The Grounds will be greatly improved and the Midway and attractions will be better than ever.

Also a change is made in the Boys' Corn Clubs Department, whereby the State is divided into three sections, and the mountain counties will no longer compete with the coast counties, except for sweepstakes. A new department for the benefit of the Boys' Pig Clubs has been created, and will no doubt be a great stimulus to this important work. The interest in the County Agricultural Premiums and the Agricultural Display Premiums is so great that it has been necessary to limit exhibits to sixteen feet front space. It is the hope of the Fair management that counties will select the prize winners at the local County Fairs to compete for the premiums at the State Fair. It is expected that the Capital City of Raleigh will make it easy and pleasant for the home-comers to join in the jubilee. In the face of a number of years of increasingly unprecedented successes the management has become so firmly convinced of the unshakeable nature of the public sentiment upon which the State Fair rests as a foundation, that the year 1910 finds it embarked upon a policy of providing more lasting and permanent structures at the Fair Grounds. There is under construction at this writing, to be completed before the opening of the Fair of 1910, a reinforced concrete exhibition building of the most modern conception, 60 x 150 feet, of ornamental architecture, surmounted by a pagoda-like roof garden overlooking the race track and taking in a view of the entire grounds. The building will be absolutely fireproof, with concrete floors and metal doors and high windows. It will be used for the installation of agricultural and horti cultural exhibits. An idea of it may be gathered from the small cut on the front cover of this book. Several much-needed improvements for the accommodation of the crowds and vehicles at the gates and on the grounds have been made. They will be appreciated in the added comfort. The Fiftieth Great State Fair and Home-coming Jubilee will be formally opened by Gov. William Walton Kitchin on Monday, October 17, 1910, at 12 o'clock, and will continue throughout the week. It doesn't matter so much which of your products is the best, provided only that you have the ambition to have the best OF something. For the desire to have the very best of any one thing will inevitably breed in you the qualities that will give you greater success in all other lines of effort. The next thing we wish to urge is this: Having made up your mind to have the best of something, arrange to exhibit it at your state, district, county, or local fair next fall. The decision to ex bibit the product will help you. It will help you because it will make you more careful and persistent and thoroughgoing in your struggle for the highest perfection. You will learn more about the best methods. And you will practice more of the best methods you already know. You will also find more zest and eagerness in doing your work. Moreover making an exhibit will help other people. Finding that you have attained a high standard of progress or achievement will inspire others to do likewise. The whole year will be happier if each member of the family decides to do his level best with some crop or animal or some form of household production and exhibit the results at some fair next fall. If a prize is won this year, good and well. If not, the knowl edge gained and the progress made will alone be worth all the ef fort, and this will help capture prizes and blue ribbons in later years. Its constitution was published the following year by J Gales, who was a newspaperman and public printer, who had founded and published The Raleigh Register since 1799. Among the major objectives of the Society was the collecting, preserving and distributing of information regarding better farming practices. It was planned, then, to offer premiums of cups, silver plate and money to farmers who developed better methods and practices for crop improvement, or designed and built more effective implements for planting, cultivating and harvesting of crops. One of the earliest resolutions approved by the Society was that the Society sponsor a cattle shew and an exhibition of domestic manufactures. However, the earlier awards were presented after judging was done at the farm, and it is presumed that there was a board of visiting or traveling judges who viewed the animals, crops and produce actually on the farm lands or in the barns of the individual landowners. Thousands of fair enthusiasts, of all ages, come to Raleigh each year to celebrate our state's agricultural heritage. They have been doing so since 1853, and 1995 will be no exception. With the theme, Let The Good Times Grow, there is something at the State Fair for everyone. Some people come to the State Fair to see the latest developments in agricultural technology. Still others bring their finest offerings in hopes of winning livestock shows, crafts and cooking contests. The young and young at heart try their luck at the midway games and test their nerves on the thrilling rides. All come to enjoy the outstanding food. Whatever the reason, everyone gathers at the Fairgrounds for ten full days of fun and excitement.
