Book excerpt: Weak signal detection of signals scattered by ocean wave surfaces and reflecting bodies is examined. Optimum threshold algorithms, are determined, which contain in addition to the usual ambient background noise, signal-dependent noise generated in the scattering process. Threshold performance probabilities are formulated, in terms of the now-generalized performance parameters associated with coherent and incoherent detection. As before, a canonical theory is presented, which is invariant of specific noise statistics and signal waveforms. Both spatial and temporal processing are included, the former implicitly in may cases by means of projected beam patterns. The physico-geometrical factors of platform motion, beam patterns, distributed scattering elements and source and receiver geometries for both the monostatic and bistatic regimes are summarized. Various distributed target models are presented, including quasi-phenomenological ones capable of analytic evaluation, involving both continuous and discrete scatterers. Under the present condition of narrow-band signals and far-field geometries, the input signal waveforms are explicitly separable from these physico-geometric factors. A weak target is assumed, in weak reverberation, vis-a-vis strong ambient noise. Sufficiently detailed analytic structure is provided to achieve explicit, quantitative results, and to guide the treatment of special problems. A short list of possible next steps is included. (JHD).

Under these conditions, only three principal parameters are needed: delta 12, delta 22 = signal detection parameters (= 'output (S/N) 2') and the correlation coefficient P sub 12 (= P) between the two (threshold) test statistics (or detection 'algorithms') Z sub 1, Z sub 2, apart from the a priori probabilities (q, p sub 1, P sub 2) of the presence of noise alone, S dub 1, and S sub 2. Next steps, to extend the treatment to the general case (M = 3): H sub 1: N + S sub 1, vs H sub 2: S sub 2 + N vs H sub 3 : S sub 3 + N, and to include correlated noise samples, are noted ... Book excerpt: Surface waves form the longest and strongest portion of a seismic record excited by explosions and shallow earthquakes. Traversing areas with diverse geologic structures, they 'absorb' information on the properties of these areas which is best retlected in dispersion, the dependence of velocity on frequency. The other prop erties of these waves - polarization, frequency content, attenuation, azimuthal variation of the amplitude and phase - arc also controlled by the medium between the source and the recording station; some of these are affected by the properties of the source itself and by the conditions around it. In recent years surface wave seismology has become an indispensable part of seismological practice. The maximum amplitude in the surface wave train of virtually every earthquake or major explosion is being measured and used by all national and international seismological surveys in the determination of the most important energy parameter of a seismic source, namely, the magnitude M,. The relationship between M, and the body wave magnitude fI1t, is routinely employed in identification of underground nuclear explosions. Surface waves of hundreds of earthquakes recorded every year are being analysed to estimate the seismic moment tensor of earthquake sources, to determine the periods of free oscillations of the Earth, to construct regional dispersion curves from which in turn the crustal and upper mantle structure in various areas is derived, and to evaluate the dissipative parameters of the mantle material.

Book excerpt: For the 119 species of marine mammals, as well as for some other aquatic animals, sound is the primary means of learning about the environment and of communicating, navigating, and foraging. The possibility that human-generated noise could harm marine mammals or significantly interfere with their normal activities is an issue of increasing concern. Noise and its potential impacts have been regulated since the passage of the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. Public awareness of the issue escalated in 1990s when researchers began using high-intensity sound to measure ocean climate changes. More recently, the stranding of beaked whales in proximity to Navy sonar use has again put the issue in the spotlight. Ocean Noise and Marine Mammals reviews sources of noise in the ocean environment, what is known of the responses of marine mammals to acoustic disturbance, and what models exist for describing ocean noise and marine mammal responses. Recommendations are made for future data gathering efforts, studies of marine mammal behavior and physiology, and modeling efforts necessary to determine what the long- and short-term impacts of ocean noise on marine mammals.

It has also become clear that knowledge of the effects of sound on one group of animals (e.g., birds or frogs) can guide studies on other groups (e.g., marine mammals or fishes) and that a review of all such studies together would be very useful to get a better understanding of the general principles and underlying cochlear and cognitive mechanisms that explain damage, disturbance, and deterrence across taxa. The purpose of this volume, then, is to provide a comprehensive review of the effects of man-made sounds on animals, with the goal of fulfilling two major needs. First, it was thought to be important to bring together data on sound and bioacoustics that have implications across all taxa (including humans) so that such information is generally available to the community of scholars interested in the effects of sound. This is done in Chaps. 2-5. Second, in Chaps. 6-10, the volume brings together what is known about the effects of sound on diverse vertebrate taxa so that investigators with interests in specific groups can learn from the data and experimental approaches from other species. Put another way, having an overview of the similarities and discrepancies among various animal groups and insight into the “how and why” will benefit the overall conceptual understanding, applications in society, and all future research.
