Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prehistoric Man, Vol. 1 of 2: Researches Into the Origin of Civilisation in the Old and the New World The first edition of Prehistoric Man, published in 1862, was l'ollowed in 1865 by another, carefully revised in accordance with later disclosures. Since then I have availed myself of further opportunities for study and research in reference both to existing races, and to the arts and monumental remains of extinct nations of the New \vorld. \vithin the same period important addi tions have been contributed to our knowledge not only of the arts, but of the physical characteristics of primeval man in Europe. In the present edition, accordingly, much of the original work has been rewritten. Several chapters have been replaced by new matter. Others have been condensed, or recast, with considerable modifi cations and a new arrangement of the whole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prehistoric Man, Vol. 1 of 2: Researches Into the Origin of Civilization in the Old and the New World But it is altogether different with the New World which Columbus revealed. Superficial students Of its monuments have indeed misinterpreted intellectual char acteristics pertaining to the infantile instincts common to human thought into fancied analogies with the arts of Egypt and more than one ingenious philosopher has traced out affinities with the mythology and astronomi cal science of the ancient East but the western conti nent still stands a world apart, with a peculiar people, and with languages, arts, and customs essentially its own. To whatever source the American nations may be traced, they had remained shut in for unnumbered cen turies by ocean barriers from all the influences of the historic hemisphere. Yet there the first European ex plorers found man so little dissimilar to all with which they were already familiar, that the name of Indian originated in the belief, retained by the great cosmo grapher to the last, that the American continent was no new world, but only the eastern confines of Asia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prehistoric Man, Vol. 2 of 2: Researches Into the Origin of Civilization in the Old and the New World So far as we can now infer from the evidence fur nished by native arts and relies connected with the use of the tobacco-plant, it seems to have been as familiar to most of the ancient tribes of the North-west, and the aborigines of the Canadian forests, as to those of the American tropics, of which the N wotiana tabacum is believed to be a native. No such remarkable deposi tories indeed have been found to the north of the great chain of lakes as those disclosed to the explorers of the tumuli of Mound City, in the Scioto Valley; but even now the tobacco-pipe monopolizes the ingenious art of many of the wild forest-tribes of the continent, and some of their most curious legends and supersti tions are connected with the favourite national imple ment. Among them it 1etains the dignity of a time honoured institution, the sacredness of which still survives with much of its ancient force and to this accordingly the student of America's primeval anti quitica is justified in turning, as an important link connecting the present with that ancient past. -'hen referring to the miniature sculptures procured from the mounds of the Ohio and Scioto valleys, Messrs. Book excerpt: This collection of essays is the second volume in a projected series of five volumes that gather together recent research by leading scholars on the narrative function of embedded Jewish scripture texts (quotations or allusions) in early Christian Gospels. The essays are arranged according to their appropriate methodological categories.
Book Synopsis Early Medieval Text and Image Volume 1 by : Jennifer O'Reilly
Download or read book Early Medieval Text and Image Volume 1 written by Jennifer O'Reilly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-17 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When she died in 2016, Dr Jennifer O’Reilly left behind a body of published and unpublished work in three areas of medieval studies: the iconography of the Gospel Books produced in early medieval Ireland and Anglo-Saxon England; the writings of Bede and his older Irish contemporary, Adomnán of Iona; and the early lives of Thomas Becket. In these three areas she explored the connections between historical texts, artistic images and biblical exegesis. This volume brings together nine studies of the Insular Gospel Books. One of them, on the iconography of the St Gall Gospels (Essay 9), was left completed, but unpublished, on the author’s death. It appears here for the first time. The remaining studies, published between 1987 and 2013, examine certain themes and motifs that inform the Gospel Books: their implicit Christology, their harmonisation of the four Gospel accounts, the depiction of Christ crucified, and the portrayal of St John the Evangelist. Two of the Books, the Durham Gospels and the Gospels of Mael Brigte, receive particular attention. (CS1079).
Book Synopsis Primitive Culture by : Edward Burnett Tylor
Download or read book Primitive Culture written by Edward Burnett Tylor and published by . This book was released on 1871 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tylor's ideology is best described in his most famous work, the two-volume Primitive Culture. The first volume, The Origins of Culture, deals with various aspects of ethnography including social evolution, linguistics, and myth. The second volume, titled Religion in Primitive Culture, deals mainly with his interpretation of animism. On the first page of Primitive Culture, Tylor provides an all-inclusive definition which is one of his most widely recognized contributions to anthropology: "Culture, or civilization, taken in its broad, ethnographic sense, is that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society." Primitive Culture remained the pinnacle of Tylor's career, important not only for its thorough study of human civilization and contributions to the emergent field of anthropology, but also for its undeniable influence on a handful of young scholars.

Book Synopsis The Cambridge Edition of Early Christian Writings: Volume 1, God by : Andrew Radde-Gallwitz
Download or read book The Cambridge Edition of Early Christian Writings: Volume 1, God written by Andrew Radde-Gallwitz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cambridge Edition of Early Christian Writings provides the definitive anthology of early Christian texts, from c.100 to 650 CE. Its six volumes reflect the cultural, intellectual and linguistic diversity of early Christianity and are organized thematically on the topics of God, practice, Christ, community, reading and creation. The series expands the pool of source material to include not only Greek and Latin writings, but also Syriac and Coptic texts. Additionally, the series rejects a theologically normative view by juxtaposing texts that were important in antiquity but later deemed 'heretical', with orthodox texts. The translations are accompanied by introductions, notes, suggestions for further reading and scriptural indices. The first volume focuses on early Christian writings about God's nature and unity, and the meaning of faith. It will be an invaluable resource for students and academic researchers in early Christian studies, history of Christianity, theology, religious studies and late antique Roman history.
