Troppo spesso gli autori di commentari del genere si sforzano soprattutto di "far parlare" il Padre nostro, piuttosto che di "ascoltarlo" per ritrovarvi un'eco del pensiero di Cristo. A noi interessa questo: ascoltare il Padre Nostro, cercando di avvicinarci ai termini che Cristo può aver utilizzato, per comprenderlo meglio, per percepirne meglio le ricchezze nascoste, non per esporne o svilupparne gli insegnamenti e senza aggiungervi nulla o rivoluzionare il pensiero o l'insegnamento della Chiesa. Perché c'è un fatto sorprendente: i Padri della Chiesa ed i teologi, pur non conoscendo l'ebraico e pur non avendo in molti casi una formazione filologica molto approfondita, erano guidati da una fede assai ferma e lucida, la quale li preservava da molti errori e li teneva in generale sulla buona strada. Così, la filologia più moderna giunge spesso a posizioni adottate d'istinto dagli autori antichi, cui apporta unicamente la garanzia di nuove prove e l'accuratezza di metodi più scientifici. Il nostro, in definitiva, è un ritorno alle origini, per apprezzare l'originalità del Padre Nostro e la veridicità del suo insegnamento attraverso la dottrina della Chiesa.
