Another consistent finding in research, although not as widely addressed by the media or other sources of public information, is the revictimization of childhood sexual abuse survivors. While studies have shown that sexual revictimization is prevalent and in need of further attention, little has been done to examine why this phenomenon occurs. This study sought to examine a number of sexual revictimization theories by comparing women with no histories of sexual abuse, a history of childhood sexual abuse only, a history of adult sexual abuse only, and a history of both childhood and adult sexual victimization on a number of measures. The hypotheses stated that women who report revictimization would also report lower self-esteem, more external locus of control, increased use of alcohol and drugs, more dissociative symptoms, and more hyper-feminine attitudes than either women with no sexual abuse history or women with a history of childhood sexual abuse only. Results from this study did not support these hypotheses but did reveal interesting and unexpected findings regarding women reporting a history of adult sexual abuse only.

Book excerpt: This study examined how substance use (i.e., alcohol abuse, illicit drug use) and the specific PTSD symptom criteria were related to sexual revictimization among community-recruited female sexual assault survivors studied at two time periods over the course of a year. A total of 1,084 participants completed the first survey, and of these, 625 participants completed another survey one year later, assessing for any new sexual assault. Results revealed that multiple sexual victimization experiences (i.e., in childhood and adulthood) predicted PTSD symptoms, which generally preceded the development of drinking problems. Two pathways were identified that increased survivors' risk for sexual revictimization (defined as another reported sexual assault within the year between the two surveys): (1) PTSD numbing symptoms directly predicted revictimization, (2) the other PTSD symptoms (minus numbing) predicted alcohol abuse, which in turn predicted sexual revictimization. However, the other PTSD symptoms (i.e., reexperiencing, avoidance, arousal) did not directly predict sexual revictimization. Results suggest that numbing symptoms and alcohol abuse may be independent indicators of a dissociative response that impairs sexual assault survivors' ability to detect risk in their environment, increasing their vulnerability for further victimization. Results also speak to breaking down the PTSD symptom clusters and separating numbing from avoidance symptoms in future studies. Implications of these findings are discussed as well as directions for future research.
