Book excerpt: In this paper we present a next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) calculation of the process $pp\rightarrow \gamma\gamma$ that we have implemented into the parton level Monte Carlo code MCFM. We do not find agreement with the previous calculation of this process in the literature. In addition to the $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^2)$ corrections present at NNLO, we include some effects arising at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^3)$, namely those associated with gluon-initiated closed fermion loops. We investigate the role of this process in the context of studies of QCD at colliders and as a background for searches for new physics, paying particular attention to the diphoton invariant mass spectrum. We demonstrate that the NNLO QCD prediction for the shape of this spectrum agrees well with functional forms used in recent data-driven fits.

Book excerpt: This book mainly investigates the precision predictions on the signal of new physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) scheme. The potential of the LHC to discover the signal of dark matter associated production with a photon is studied after including next-to-leading order QCD corrections. The factorization and resummation of t-channel top quark transverse momentum distribution in the standard model at both the Tevatron and the LHC with soft-collinear effective theory are presented. The potential of the early LHC to discover the signal of monotops is discussed. These examples illustrate the method of searching for new physics beyond what is known today with high precision.

The ultimate goal of physical education and physical activity promotion is to facilitate and encourage individuals to engage in a physically active lifestyle. It can be achieved by improving physical literacy, which is defined as ‘the ability of individuals to move with competence and confidence in a wide variety of physical activities, in multiple environments that benefit the healthy development and overall quality of life of the whole person.’ Prior to developing strategies for improving physical literacy, its concept needs to be defined and conceptualized because it involves complex interplays of individuals’ knowledge and understanding of physical activity as well as individuals’ motivation, self-confidence and physical competence for being physically active for life. The 6th Yogyakarta International Seminar on Health, Physical Education, and Sports Science (YISHPESS 2023) respond to this issue by organising the conference which carries a theme of "Lessening the prevalence of sedentary lifestyles through the use of physical education resources”. The Conference invites reputable international scholars and experts closely working in physical literacy, physical education and sports science in general.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the measurement of the Higgs boson cross section in the diphoton decay channel. The measurement relies on proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy √s = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The collected data correspond to the full Run-2 dataset with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb-1. The measured cross sections are used to constrain anomalous Higgs boson interactions in the Effective Field Theory (EFT) framework. The results presented in this thesis represent a reduction by a factor 2 of the different photon and jet energy scale and resolution systematic uncertainties with respect to the previous ATLAS publication. The thesis details the calibration of electron and photon energies in ATLAS, in particular the measurement of the presampler energy scale and the estimation of its systematic uncertainty. This calibration was used to perform a measurement of the Higgs boson mass in the H → γγ and H → 4l channels using the 36 fb−1 dataset.

Book excerpt: Measurements of prompt photon production in {anti p}p collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV from the CDF and D0 experiments at Fermilab are presented. The measured inclusive isolated photon spectrum at CDF and D0 are used to test current parton distribution functions and NLO QCD predictions. No new resonance is found in the photon + jet mass spectrum from D0 which is consistent with NLO QCD predictions. The pseudorapidity distribution of the leading jet in photon events at CDF is used to constrain the parton distribution sets while the angular distribution is found to be better explained by a larger Bremsstrahlung contribution. The soft diphoton spectrum is compared to NLO QCD predictions. The diphoton system P{sub T} is found to agree better with the LO shower monte-carlo prediction of Pythia than NLO QCD. Finally, the [gamma] + charm cross section is measured and compared to the LO Pythia prediction.

Book excerpt: "Studies of QCD structure in high-energy collisions" is a research project in theoretical particle physics at Southern Methodist University funded by US DOE Award DE-SC0013681. The award furnished bridge funding for one year (2015/04/15-2016/03/31) between the periods funded by Nadolsky's DOE Early Career Research Award DE-SC0003870 (in 2010-2015) and a DOE grant DE-SC0010129 for SMU Department of Physics (starting in April 2016). The primary objective of the research is to provide theoretical predictions for Run-2 of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The LHC physics program relies on state-of-the-art predictions in the field of quantum chromodynamics. The main effort of our group went into the global analysis of parton distribution functions (PDFs) employed by the bulk of LHC computations. Parton distributions describe internal structure of protons during ultrarelivistic collisions. A new generation of CTEQ parton distribution functions (PDFs), CT14, was released in summer 2015 and quickly adopted by the HEP community. The new CT14 parametrizations of PDFs were obtained using benchmarked NNLO calculations and latest data from LHC and Tevatron experiments. The group developed advanced methods for the PDF analysis and estimation of uncertainties in LHC predictions associated with the PDFs. We invented and refined a new 'meta-parametrization' technique that streamlines usage of PDFs in Higgs boson production and other numerous LHC processes, by combining PDFs from various groups using multivariate stochastic sampling. In 2015, the PDF4LHC working group recommended to LHC experimental collaborations to use 'meta-parametrizations' as a standard technique for computing PDF uncertainties. Finally, to include new QCD processes into the global fits, our group worked on several (N)NNLO calculations.

Book excerpt: This work presents some essential techniques that constitute the modern strategy for computing scattering amplitudes. It begins with an introductory chapter to fill the gap between a standard QFT course and the latest developments in the field. The author then tackles the main bottleneck: the computation of the loop Feynman integrals. The most efficient technique for their computation is the method of the differential equations. This is discussed in detail, with a particular focus on the mathematical aspects involved in the derivation of the differential equations and their solution. Ample space is devoted to the special functions arising from the differential equations, to their analytic properties, and to the mathematical techniques which allow us to handle them systematically. The thesis also addresses the application of these techniques to a cutting-edge problem of importance for the physics programme of the Large Hadron Collider: five-particle amplitudes at two-loop order. It presents the first analytic results for complete two-loop five-particle amplitudes, in supersymmetric theories and QCD. The techniques discussed here open the door to precision phenomenology for processes of phenomenological interest, such as three-photon, three-jet, and di-photon + jet production.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Precise theory predictions for scattering processes are an important input for the physics program at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, Geneva. Notably the complex collider signatures of an electroweak vector boson and many jets that originate in either light partons (light jets) or bottom quarks (b jets) are relevant for both measurements of Standard Model processes as well as searches for new physics. In this thesis, we present new next-to-leading order QCD predictions for two related high-multiplicity processes at the LHC $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV. We show predictions for $Wb\bar{b}$ production in association with two and three light jets that we computed for the first time. In order to obtain the required one-loop amplitudes, we implement the numerical unitarity approach for massive particles in a new version of the BlackHat library. To this end, we devise and apply a new algorithm for the evaluation of D-dimensional unitarity cuts. It builds on a consistent embedding of external fermions states in dimensional regularization and reduces the computational complexity of our calculations. Furthermore, we present next-to-leading order QCD predictions for $V+n$-jet production in association with up to $n = 5$ light jets for $V = W^\pm$ and with up to $n = 4$ light jets for $V = Z$, which we extend to the higher center-of-mass energy of the Large Hadron Collider Run-II. For these processes we compare results obtained with fixed-order scales such as $\hat{H}_T^'/2$ with the MiNLO reweighting procedure

Book excerpt: We report a measurement of the rate of prompt diphoton production in p{bar p} collisions at (square root)s = 1.96 TeV using a data sample of 207 pb−1 collected with the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF II). The background from non-prompt sources is determined using a statistical method based on differences in the electromagnetic showers. The cross section is measured as a function of the diphoton mass, the transverse momentum of the diphoton system, and the azimuthal angle between the two photons and is found to be consistent with perturbative QCD predictions.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The expected precision of the measurements at the high-luminosity LHC will require theory predictions at NNLO in QCD to be provided for a large class of high-multiplicity processes which makes an automated approach highly desirable. In this thesis we develop and implement algorithms in the goal towards achieving such an automation. First of all, a novel method for the computation of analytic expressions of multi-loop virtual amplitudes is presented. It relies on functional interpolation algorithms to reconstruct the analytic expressions of the amplitudes from targeted numerical evaluations. The numerical evaluation of the amplitudes is performed exactly using finite field arithmetics in the framework of multi-loop numerical unitarity. The complexity of the interpolation is reduced by expressing the amplitudes in a basis of special functions and by using physical and analytical properties to remove any redundant information from their coefficients. After the reconstruction in the finite field, the result is simplified by performing a multivariate partial fractioning that yields compact expressions which benefit both their rational reconstruction and the efficiency and stability of their numerical evaluation. As a main result of this thesis, we showcase the application of the approach to provide, for the first time, analytic expressions for a complete set of independent two-loop five-parton helicity amplitudes in the leading-color approximation that are relevant for the NNLO QCD phenomenology of three-jet production at hadron colliders. In order to achieve these results, we have developed the C++ framework Caravel, in which we implement both the multi-loop numerical unitarity method and the functional reconstruction algorithms employed. We have designed Caravel to be able to compute a variety of processes in a semi-automated fashion. Second, we provide an independent implementation of the N-Jettiness slicing method in its adaptation to color-singlet final states in the library scet++. The library is embedded into a Monte Carlo program to compute NLO and NNLO QCD corrections to the neutral-current Drell-Yan process. Finally, we present a critical review of the application of the N-Jettiness slicing method to more complex processes of relevance at the high-luminosity LHC and its potential for automation
