Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised and updated edition of Black Women in the Academy adds updated data on the status of Black faculty women, a forty-four-page bibliography, and a new chapter on the status of international faculty women from twenty different countries, to the only study of the decisions of African-American women to remain in, return to, or voluntarily leave the academy. Sheila Gregory creates a conceptual framework from economic, psychosocial, and job satisfaction theories to construct a model to explain the factors that affect the decision patterns influencing career mobility. She uses a survey of the members of the Association of Black Women in Higher Education to illustrate to what degree the designated variables predict decision patterns. Gregory's analysis focuses on the women who remained in the academy, noting that those who did remain were usually successful high-achievers who managed to overcome numerous obstacles involving career and family. The author also provides an outline detailing how to attract and retain talented Black women scholars, along with possible interventions that might help interinstitutional mobility.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data, Methods and Theory in the Organizational Sciences explores the long-term evolution and changing relationships between data, methods, and theory in the organizational sciences. In the last 50 years, theory has come to dominate research and scholarship in these fields, yet the emergence of big data, as well as the increasing use of archival data sets and meta-analytic methods to test empirical hypotheses, has upset this order. This volume examines the evolving relationship between data, methods, and theory and suggests new ways of thinking about the role of each in the development and presentation of research in organizations. This volume utilizes the latest thinking from experts in a wide range of fields on the topics of data, methods, and theory and uses this knowledge to explore the ways in which behavior in organizations has been studied. This volume also argues that the current focus on theory is both unhealthy for the field and unsustainable, and it provides more successful ways theory can be used to support and structure research, and demonstrates the most effective techniques for analyzing and making sense of data. This is an essential resource for researchers, professionals, and educators who are looking to rethink their current approaches to research, and who are interested in creating more useful and more interpretable research in the organizational sciences.

Book excerpt: Contrary to popular opinion, college and university faculty often experience a greater amount of stress than professionals in many other occupations. Faculty Stress takes a comprehensive look at faculty stress, its causes, and its consequences. This unique book explores the wide range of factors associated with work-related stress, the sources and perceptions of stress in differing academic environments, and the importance of gender factors in understanding and dealing with work stress in academia. Respected authorities discuss quantitative and qualitative research, case studies, and provide helpful policy recommendations. As higher education rapidly changes, the importance of understanding and effectively dealing with the stress that faculty endures increases. Faculty Stress explores in detail how change affects work and personal lives of faculty. This revealing book is crucial for current faculty and administrators who want to understand and effectively deal with stress, as well as future faculty who need to know how to better prepare for the rigors of their college and university academic profession. Faculty Stress is a valuable resource for faculty, higher education administrators, graduate students who intend to become faculty, librarians, higher education scholars, and scholars who study work and occupations. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Human Behavior in the Social Environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when some institutions of higher learning are questioning the need for academic tenure and numerous state legislatures are considering its abolishment, Matthew W. Finkin presents a thorough and unapologetic case in defense of tenure. Finkin has culled materials from a variety of sources'economic analyses, judicial opinions, investigative reports, institutional studies, speeches and personal essays'to survey the entire system of tenure from probationary appointment to retirement or dismissal for cause. To these viewpoints, he adds his own commentary to illuminate what tenure means, and to clarify what it does and does not protect. He places the need for tenure not only in historical perspective, but also in the highly charged context of the contemporary campus. In suggesting the origins of the concept of academic tenure, for example, Finkin excerpts the 1915 Declaration on Academic Freedom and Tenure. That document characterized the university as ?an intellectual experiment station, where new ideas may germinate and where their fruit, though still distasteful to the community as a whole, may be allowed to ripen until finally, perchance, it may become a part of the accepted intellectual food of the nation or of the world.'

The Handbook focuses on twelve general areas that encompass the salient dimensions of scholarly and policy inquiries undertaken in the international higher education community.
