Book excerpt: Rapid population growth and climate variability have been posing pressure on groundwater management, especially in regions dominated by irrigation agriculture. Effective management practices require a better understanding of groundwater dynamics and its contributing factors, such as recharge, groundwater-surface water interactions, soil and unsaturated zone characteristics. Although groundwater models can provide valuable insights into these questions, these models are often nonexistent or cost prohibitive. The purpose of this study is to use a data-driven approach to understand the spatiotemporal dynamics of groundwater level observations. Using the Platte River Basin in Nebraska as the study area, I examined explanatory factors (e.g. precipitation, pumping and streamflow) that may be associated with the dynamics of groundwater table using data mining techniques. Groundwater level data from 14 wells during the time period of 2000-2018 was used for this study. Two different approaches for examining the spatial and temporal datasets were employed and compared. In the first approach, I used the principal component analysis (PCA) and a cluster analysis to group the wells into three different clusters. A cross-correlation analysis was then used to associate the clusters with explanatory variables. In the second approach, I used multivariate singular spectrum analysis (MSSA) to decompose the time series into three components, including trends, seasonal and other oscillatory signals. Then a time series clustering method was adopted to divide the wells into different groups. The oscillatory signals from the MSSA and time-series clustering were used to examine temporal dynamics of each group of wells. Both approaches were found to be useful in understanding the spatial pattern and explanatory factors influencing the groundwater level variations. The spatiotemporal variations in groundwater levels in the Platte River Basin were found to be influenced by groundwater pumping, natural recharge and hydrological connection with the Platte River and its tributaries in varying degrees. This study shows that data mining is a useful tool to understand groundwater resource dynamics.

The problem of water scarcity is a result of population growth and climate change. This would have increased the need for groundwater. However, there are differences in the groundwater's distribution. Three different types of models periodic, polynomial, and rainfall models that take more time and have less accuracy are used in a single pass learning process to predict groundwater. The data from the more than 100 observation wells in each of these districts were reviewed by these models, which subsequently produced seasonal models to illustrate the behavior of the groundwater. We state that the annual groundwater availability for use in the future is achieved utilizing a rainfall level predictor in our proposed method. The system created a precise classification in order to determine the estimated groundwater level with various variability. We estimated groundwater level in our suggested system at different groundwater well locations in India using a BPNN model. Additionally, we conducted sensitivity research using several feature combination scenarios, comparing the accuracy and reliability of the predictions that were generated. In this work, the usage and comparison of three data-driven models for predicting short-term groundwater levels is the main topic. The objective is to develop a new data-based method for forecasting groundwater levels that is extremely accurate and that can help water managers, engineers, and other stakeholders manage groundwater levels in a more effective and sustainable way.

Book excerpt: The continuous decline of groundwater levels caused by variations in climatic conditions and crop water demands is an increased concern for the agricultural community. It is necessary to understand the factors that control these changes in groundwater levels so that we can better address declines and develop improved conservation practices that will lead to a more sustainable use of water. In this study, two machine learning techniques namely support vector regression (SVR) and the nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous inputs (NARX) neural network were implemented to predict daily groundwater levels in a well located in the Mississippi Delta Region (MDR). Results of the NARX model indicate that a Bayesian regularization algorithm with two hidden nodes and 100 time delays was the best architecture to forecast groundwater levels. In another study, the SVR and the NARX model were compared for the prediction of groundwater withdrawal and recharge periods separately. Results from this study showed that input data classified by seasons lead to incremental improvements in the model accuracy, and that the SVR was the most efficient machine learning model with a Mean Squared Error (MSE) of 0.00123 m for the withdrawal season. Analysis of input variables such as previous daily groundwater levels (Gw), precipitation (Pr), and evapotranspiration (ET) showed that the combination of Gw+Pr provides the optimal set for groundwater prediction and that ET degraded the modeling performance, especially during recharge seasons. Finally, the CROPGRO-Soybean crop model was used to simulate the impacts of different volumes of irrigation on the crop height and yield, and to generate the daily irrigation requirements for soybean crops in the MDR. Four irrigation threshold scenarios (20%, 40%, 50% and 60%) were obtained from the CROGRO-Soybean model and used as inputs in the SVR to evaluate the predicted response of daily groundwater levels to different irrigation demands. This study demonstrated that conservative irrigation management, by selecting a low irrigation threshold, can provide good yields comparable to what is produced by a high volume irrigation management practice. Thus, lower irrigation volumes can have a big impact on decreasing the amount of groundwater withdrawals, while still maintaining comparable yields.
