Book excerpt: The study used a correlation design to explore relationships among locus of control, self concept & academic achievement. The study population comprised all the form four students from the 52 public secondary schools in Bureti District. Stratified random sampling was used to select 5 secondary schools with simple random sampling being used to select 200 students. Data was collected using a questionnaire to generate both qualitative and quantitative data. The study findings revealed that students had a positive self concept & internal locus of control. It further established that majority of the students believe in themselves, have control of their lives, evaluated themselves positively and also accepted their identity. Pearson correlation coefficient analysis revealed that there was a significant but weak correlation between students'; academic performance and locus of control; students' academic performance versus self concept & also a significant difference between female and male students' locus of control. However, the results showed that there was no significant gender difference in students self concept.

Book excerpt: The main aim of this study was to determine whether the locus of control construct could be used to predict academic success. The study differentiated between short-term academic success (successful completion of the first year of study) and long-term academic success (successful completion of pre-graduate degree). Both generalised and domain specific locus of control measurements were used to determine which of these correlate with academic success. A further aim was to investigate the role of self esteem and level of defensiveness in the relationship between locus of control and academic achievement. Four measurement instruments were administered to an effective sample of 53 first year students at the University of Pretoria. The measurement instruments were the Internal, Powerful other and Chance Scales (Levenson, 1981), the Multi-dimensional, Multi-attributional Causality Scale (Lefcourt, 1981), the Social Desirability Scale (Crowne & Marlowe, 1960) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965). The statistical analyses consisted of descriptive statistics and correlational analyses. Analysis of the data showed no significant correlation between locus of control and academic achievement for the group as a whole but did show a significant positive correlation between long-term academic success and generalised internality among black students. The data further showed a significant negative correlation between self esteem and long-term academic success. Self esteem correlated positively with an external orientation in both black and white students. The only significant predictor of academic success among white students was social desirability.

Book excerpt: The current study examines predictors of math achievement and college graduation by integrating social learning theory and expectancy-value theory. Data came from a nationally-representative longitudinal database tracking 12,144 students over twelve years from 8th grade forward. Models for math achievement and college graduation were tested through structural equation modeling. Consistent with earlier research, previous math achievement predicted both outcomes. Performance expectancies and task-specific self-concept respectively predicted math achievement and college graduation, although the contribution of task-specific self-concept was smaller than shown in previous research. The social learning theory concept of behavior potential was found to be a predictor of college graduation but not math achievement. Limitations and implications are discussed, with a focus on future research questions.

Book excerpt: Limited research is available when attempting to determine what, if any, differences exist in predicting academic success and persistence for African-American students attending a historically Black college or university (HBCU) versus a predominantly White institution (PWI). Tracey and Sedlacek's (1984) noncognitive variables have accurately predicted academic success and persistence for African-American students. However, in this study, the majority of the noncognitive variables as measured by the NCQ did not differ significantly between the PWI (n=58) and the HBCU (n=538). The interaction term of Positive Self-Concept and institution type did differ for academic success and was more significant at the PWI than the HBCU. Similarly, Knowledge Acquired in a Field and Successful Leadership Positions differed for college persistence between the two institution types and was more significant at the PWI than the HBCU. Although the majority of noncognitive variables did not assist in determining the second semester GPA or enrollment status of African-American students at either a PWI or a HBCU, past research has clearly demonstrated that the significance of noncognitive variables differs from semester to semester. Therefore, a more comprehensive longitudinal study examining multiple PWIs and HBCUs is needed to fully understand what, if any, differences there are in the way noncognitive or psychosocial variables predict academic success and persistence at a PWI versus a HBCU.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Receiving a college education has perhaps never been more important than it is today. While its personal, societal, and overall economic benefits are well documented, too many college students fail to complete their postsecondary education. As colleges and universities are investing substantial resources into efforts to counter these attrition rates and increase retention, they are mostly unaware of the robust literature on student success that is often bounded in disciplinary silos. The purpose of this book is to bring together in a single volume the extensive knowledge on college student success. It includes seven chapters from authors who each synthesize the literature from their own field of study, or perspective. Each describes the theories, models, and concepts they use; summarizes the key findings from their research; and provides implications for practice, policy, and/or research. The disciplinary chapters offer perspectives from higher education, public policy, behavioral economics, social psychology, STEM, sociology, and critical and post-structural theory.
