Book excerpt: Despite continued reliance on simulators during training, research, and pilot certification, the predictive relationship of data obtained from simulators and its relevance to the operational reality of flight remains inconclusive. If a pilot shows great proficiency in an aircraft simulator, perhaps the pilot will also exhibit similar levels of proficiency in the actual aircraft. The research presented in this report continues an almost thirty year attempt to establish pilot performance in an aircraft simulator as a valid predictor of anticipated performance in the corresponding aircraft. While a larger sample size may have strengthened the results of this study, it can be concluded that a significant lack of predictability in pilot performance exists from simulated to real flight in the UH-60 helicopter. These results follow and reinforce previous studies conducted in numerous airframes over the last 30 years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helicopter slung-load operations are common in both military and civil contexts. Helicopters and loads are often qualified for these operations by means of flight tests, which can be expensive and time consuming. There is significant potential to reduce such costs both through revisions in flight-test methods and by using validated simulation models. To these ends, flight tests were conducted at Moffett Field to demonstrate the identification of key dynamic parameters during flight tests (aircraft stability margins and handling-qualities parameters, and load pendulum stability), and to accumulate a data base for simulation development and validation. The test aircraft was a UH-60A Black Hawk, and the primary test load was an instrumented 8- by 6- by 6-ft cargo container. Tests were focused on the lateral and longitudinal axes, which are the axes most affected by the load pendulum modes in the frequency range of interest for handling qualities; tests were conducted at airspeeds from hover to 80 knots. Using telemetered data, the dynamic parameters were evaluated in near real time after each test airspeed and before clearing the aircraft to the next test point. These computations were completed in under 1 min. A simulation model was implemented by integrating an advanced model of the UH-60A aerodynamics, dynamic equations for the two-body slung-load system, and load static aerodynamics obtained from wind-tunnel measurements. Comparisons with flight data for the helicopter alone and with a slung load showed good overall agreement for all parameters and test points; however, unmodeled secondary dynamic losses around 2 Hz were found in the helicopter model and they resulted in conservative stability margin estimates.

This book was released on 1999-03-01 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helicopter/slung load systems are two body systems in which the slung load adds its rigid body dynamics, aerodynamics, and sling stretching dynamics to the helicopter. The slung load can degrade helicopter handling qualities and reduce the flight envelope of the helicopter. Confirmation of system stability parameters and envelope is desired, but flight test evaluation is time consuming and costly. A simulation model validated for handling quality assessments would significantly reduce resources expended in flight testing while increasing efficiency, productivity, and safety by aiding researchers, designers, and pilots to understand factors affecting helicopter-slung load handling qualities. This thesis describes a comprehensive dynamics and aerodynamics model for slung load simulation, obtained by integrating the NASA Ames Gen Hel UH-60A simulation with slung load equations of motion. Frequency domain analysis is used to compare simulation to flight test frequency responses and key system stability parameters. Results are given for no load, a 4K lb Block, and a 4K lb CONEX load. Handling quality parameters, stability margins, and load pendulum motion roots for cases without load aerodynamics and with static wind tunnel data were compared. Results illustrated state-of-the-art simulation modeling of helicopter/slung load dynamics and its accuracy in predicting key dynamic parameters of interest.

For each flight, each subject was given a different combination of thrust to weight, cyclic control sensitivity and cyclic spring centering force gradient condition making up an incomplete, balanced block-type experimental design. Several error measurements were recorded during the trials; however, none could be satisfactorily utilized to predict either accuracy of performance, or be an indicator of relative workload. An unanticipated large variation of measures taken is thought to be the cause. Additional approaches and further study of the problem is recommended.

Book excerpt: The effects on flight performance of the four combinations of an unencumbered level-zero MOPP0 aviator battle dress uniform and encumbered MOPP4 over ABDU flight ensemble in cool and hot UH-60 simulator cockpit conditions were evaluated. This report describes the flight performance results. Every 30 minutes, the right seat pilot encountered instrument meteorological conditions and ascended to 2000 feet to perform a 10-minute set of standard maneuvers. After each iteration of the set of standard maneuvers, the pilot returned to nap-of-the-earth (NOE) and contour flight between control points. The right seat pilot also performed four 1-minute hovers (HOVs) and hover turns (HOVTs). The simulator's data acquisition system captured relevant combinations of airspeed, altitude, turn and climb rates, trim, and roll for each type of flight maneuver, as well as cyclic and collective inputs during HOV and HOVT. The encumbered MOPP4 uniform was associated with reduced averaged composite scores (ACS) for five of eight maneuvers. ACS values were significantly lower for 5 of 29 separately scored flight systems parameters. The hot temperature condition reduced the ACS for only one (RSRT) of eight maneuvers. For the iterations of the maneuvers flown with AFOS on, the encumbered MOPP4 ensemble was associated with significantly lower ACS for 3 of 8 maneuvers and 5 of the 29 separately scored flight parameters. With AFCS off, the encumbered MOPP4 uniform significantly degraded the composite ACS for 2 of 4 maneuvers comprising the set of standard maneuvers that were alternately flown with AFCS off and 5 of 17 separately scored flight parameters. The hot temperature was associated with reduced composite ACS values for two of the four flight maneuvers.

Book excerpt: Helicopters operate in an environment where task performance can easily be affected by atmospheric turbulence. This paper discusses the airborne flight test of the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter in turbulent conditions to determine disturbance rejection criteria and to develop a low speed turbulence model for helicopter simulation. A simple approach to modeling the aircraft response to turbulence is described by using an identified model of the Black Hawk to extract representative control inputs that replicate the aircraft response to disturbances. This parametric turbulence model is designed to be scaled for varying levels of turbulence and utilized in ground or in-flight simulation. Flight control cutoff frequency data are also analyzed to support design criteria for gust rejection handling qualities.

Book excerpt: Historically, helicopter and load combinations have been qualified through flight testing, requiring considerable time and cost. With advancements in simulation and flight test techniques, there is potential to substantially reduce costs and increase the safety of helicopter sling load certification. Validated simulation tools make possible accurate prediction of operational flight characteristics before initial flight tests. Real time analysis of test data improves the safety and efficiency of the testing programs. To advance these concepts, the US Army and NASA, in cooperation with the Israeli Air Force and Technion, under a Memorandum of Agreement, seek to develop and validate a numerical model of the UH-60 with sling load and demonstrate a method of near real time flight test analysis. This thesis presents results from flight tests of a US Army Black Hawk helicopter with various external loads. Tests were conducted as the US first phase of this MOA task. The primary load was a container express box (CONEX), which contained a compact instrumentation package. The flights covered the airspeed range from hover to 70 knots. Primary maneuvers were pitch and roll frequency sweeps, steps, and doublets. Results of the test determined the effect of the suspended load on both the aircraft's handling qualities and it's control system's stability margins. Included were calculations of the stability characteristics of the load's pendular motion. Utilizing CIFER software, a method for near-real time system identification was also demonstrated during the flight test program.

Book excerpt: The efficacy of Dexedrine for sustaining the performance of six female UH-60 pilots under conditions of moderate sleep deprivation was determined. Each subject was exposed to one week of testing which included 2, 40-hour sleep deprivation periods. During both deprivation periods, there were 5 equally-spaced test sessions, each of which included a UH-60 simulator flight, an electroencephalographic (EEG) evaluation, a test on the Microsoft Flight Simulator, a Profile of Mood States questionnaire, and a cognitive evaluation on the Synthetic Work Battery. These testing sessions began at 0100, 0500, 0900, 1300, and 1700. During one of the deprivation periods, subjects were administered a 10-mg dose of Dexedrine one hour prior to each of the first three sessions (for a total of 30 mgs). During the other deprivation period, subjects were administered placebos. A double-blind administration scheme was used. Vital signs were monitored at regular intervals throughout the study.

Book excerpt: Developed to replace the UH-1 Iroquis, Sikorsky s UH-60 Black Hawk first entered service in 1979. A four-blade, twin-engine, medium-lift utility helicopter, the UH-60 serves as the U.S. Army s primary tactical transport helicopter. Modified versions include models for the U.S. Navy and Air Force, and specialized versions including the UH-60C (modified for Command and Control missions), EH-60A (electronic systems operations and electronic warfare), and the UH-60Q (medical transport). Two major variants of the Black Hawk currently exist: the UH-60L and UH-60M. The UH-60L incorporates improvements to the basic design that provide more power and lifting capability, as well as automatic flight control. The newer UH-60M features upgraded engines, improved rotor blades, and state-of-the-art flight controls that will allow the helicopter s service life to extend to 2020 and beyond. Over 2500 Black Hawks have been built, and nearly 1000 more are currently on order. Black Hawks have seen combat service for the U.S. Military in Grenada, Panama, Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq. Other nations also employ the UH-60 including Brazil, Colombia, Israel, Mexico, Taiwan, Australia, Japan, and Turkey. Created by Sikorsky and the U.S. Army, this pilot s flight operating manual profiles the UH-60Q Black Hawk. Over 500 pages long, this unclassified document is reprinted here in its entirety."

The best available mathematical model for the subject helicopter (UH-60A Black Hawk) was programmed for real-time operation. Flight data were obtained to validate the math model, and to develop models for the pilot control strategy while performing mission-type tasks. The validated mathe model will be combined with motion and visual systems to perform ground based simulation during April of 1983. Comparisons of the control strategy obtained in flight with that obtained on the simulator will be used as the basis for assessing the fidelity of the results obtained in the simulator. (Author).

Book excerpt: Helicopter handling qualities research requires that a ground-based simulation be a high-fidelity representation of the actual helicopter, especially over the frequency range of the investigation. This experiment was performed to assess the current capability to simulate the UH-60A Black Hawk helicopter on the Vertical Motion Simulator (VMS) at NASA Ames, to develop a methodology for assessing the fidelity of a simulation, and to find the causes for lack of fidelity. The approach used was to compare the simulation to the flight vehicle for a series of tasks performed in flight and in the simulator. The results show that subjective handling qualities ratings from flight to simulator overlap, and the mathematical model matches the UH-60A helicopter very well over the range of frequencies critical to handling qualities evaluation. Pilot comments, however, indicate a need for improvement in the perceptual fidelity of the simulation in the areas of motion and visual cuing. The methodology used to make the fidelity assessment proved useful in showing differences in pilot work load and strategy, but additional work is needed to refine objective methods for determining causes of lack of fidelity.
