Book Synopsis Precision Electroweak Physics at Electron-Positron Colliders by : Stefan Roth
Download or read book Precision Electroweak Physics at Electron-Positron Colliders written by Stefan Roth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This up-to-date volume reviews the recent contributions of electron-positron colliders to the precision test of the electroweak Standard Model. In particular, it contains a short summary of the measurements at the Z resonance and gives an overview of the electroweak processes above the Z. Subsequently, the measurement of the W mass at LEP is discussed in detail. The implications for the precision test of the Standard Model are presented, giving the status of the global electroweak fit before the startup of Large Hadron Collider. The final chapters give an outlook on the electroweak physics at a future linear collider. The book also features many illustrations and tables. Readers obtain a coherent overview of the results of 20 years of electroweak physics conducted at electron-positron colliders.
Book Synopsis Total Cross-Section Measurements by : G. Giacomelli
Download or read book Total Cross-Section Measurements written by G. Giacomelli and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Total Cross-Section Measurements discusses the cross-sectional dimensions of elementary hadron collisions. The main coverage of the book is the resonance and high energy area of the given collision. A section of the book explains in detail the characteristic of a resonance region. Another section is focused on the location of the high energy region of collision. Parts of the book define the meaning of resonance in nuclear physics. Also explained are the measurement of resonance and the identification of the area where the resonance originates. Different experimental methods to measure the total cross section of a charged particle are given. One such method is the transmission method. Bubble chamber measurement is another method that is covered in the book. Systems of analysis such as the pion-nucleon system, the K–-nucleon system, and K+- nucleon system are discussed. The book is an excellent guide for nuclear physicists and students of physics.

This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Vector boson scattering is one of the recent remarkable observations at the Large Hadron Collider. The longitudinal polarization modes of the massive vector bosons are strongly tied to the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism. With the Standard Model predicted Higgs boson playing a crucial role in regularizing the scattering amplitude of these longitudinally polarized bosons, vector boson scattering is a pivotal process in experimentally probing the symmetry breaking mechanism. A golden channel for measuring vector boson scattering at the collider is the electroweak production of two $W$ bosons with the same electric charges. Owing to its largest quark- to gluon- induced production ratio among other di-boson combinations, the process was also the first target of the ATLAS vector boson scattering program, with evidence made in 2014 and observation in 2019. This thesis presents the first measurement of the differential cross-section with the ATLAS experiment at $\sqrt{s}=13$\,TeV using 139\,fb$^{-1}$ datasets of proton-proton collisions. The process is studied in the leptonic decay channels of the $W$ bosons, effectively suppressing many Standard Model backgrounds. The process $pp \rightarrow l^{\pm} \nu l^{\pm} \nu jj $ is measured with the final state consisting of two leptons of like charges, two jets, and missing transverse energy. The characteristic vector boson scattering signature of two tagging jets, with a large di-jet invariant mass, separated by large angles, is used to tag electroweak-induced production. A combination of Monte Carlo-based predictions and data-driven approaches is used to estimate the various backgrounds. A statistical model of profile likelihood is used to constrain the background predictions and reduce the uncertainties following which the events are unfolded, and the cross-section is extracted. The fiducial differential cross-sections are measured in the leptonic channel as a function of several kinematic variables and are found to be consistent with the Standard Model predictions within uncertainties. An experimental precision of 10.2\% is achieved for the fiducial cross-section, and the measurement is unprecedented in precision and granularity for the process. The integrated fiducial cross-section is $3.51 \pm 0.27\,\text{(stat)}\,\pm 0.23\,\text{(syst)}\,\text{fb}$ and agrees with the leading order prediction of $2.97^{+0.28}_{-0.24}\,\text{fb} $ simulated by MadGraph+Herwig7 within uncertainties

Book Synopsis Parameterized Cross Sections for Pion Production in Proton-Proton Collisions by : National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
Download or read book Parameterized Cross Sections for Pion Production in Proton-Proton Collisions written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-03 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accurate knowledge of cross sections for pion production in proton-proton collisions finds wide application in particle physics, astrophysics, cosmic ray physics, and space radiation problems, especially in situations where an incident proton is transported through some medium and knowledge of the output particle spectrum is required when given the input spectrum. In these cases, accurate parameterizations of the cross sections are desired. In this paper much of the experimental data are reviewed and compared with a wide variety of different cross section parameterizations. Therefore, parameterizations of neutral and charged pion cross sections are provided that give a very accurate description of the experimental data. Lorentz invariant differential cross sections, spectral distributions, and total cross section parameterizations are presented.Blattnig, Steve R. and Swaminathan, Sudha R. and Kruger, Adam T. and Ngom, Moussa and Norbury, John W. and Tripathi, R.
