Book excerpt: The formation of metastable and equilibrium phases in binary Al–Li, ternary Al–Li–Mg and Al–Li–Cu, and quaternary Al–Cu–Li–Mg alloys has been studied by using a variety of experimental techniques including differential scanning calorimetry, electrical resistivity, X-ray diffraction, conventional and high-resolution electron microscopy and 3D atom probe measurements. Al3Li (δ′) is the strengthening phase in binary Al–Li and ternary Al–Li–Mg alloys. Mg reduces the solubility of Li in Al and also substitutes for Li in δ′. The characteristics of θ′ (and θ) and T1 phases in Al–Li–Cu alloys and the composition limits where these phases are formed are well understood. For low Li contents (1.4–1.5%). Formation of T1 is promoted by small additions of Ag and Mg and by cold work prior to artificial aging. Zr forms the metastable β′ (Al3Zr) phase, which has an appreciable effect on retarding recrystallization besides providing nucleation sites for composite δ′ particles. Sc and Yb additions behave in a similar way; the added advantage is improved creep strength. The available information from phase equilibria studies of Al–Li–Cu–Mg alloys is somewhat limited, but sufficient to give an indication of the desirable solution treatment and aging temperatures and the phases formed at these temperatures. 3D atom probe studies suggest the involvement of Mg atoms in the formation of clusters which lead to the formation of the T1 phase, during artificial ageing of aging of quenched Al–Cu–Mg–Ag alloys. All these aspects are covered in detail, with specific reference to different commercial and semi-commercial Al–Li alloys, wherever possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because lithium is the least dense elemental metal, materials scientists and engineers have been working for decades to develop a commercially viable aluminum-lithium (Al-Li) alloy that would be even lighter and stiffer than other aluminum alloys. The first two generations of Al-Li alloys tended to suffer from several problems, including poor ductility and fracture toughness; unreliable properties, fatigue and fracture resistance; and unreliable corrosion resistance. Now, new third generation Al-Li alloys with significantly reduced lithium content and other improvements are promising a revival for Al-Li applications in modern aircraft and aerospace vehicles. Over the last few years, these newer Al-Li alloys have attracted increasing global interest for widespread applications in the aerospace industry largely because of soaring fuel costs and the development of a new generation of civil and military aircraft. This contributed book, featuring many of the top researchers in the field, is the first up-to-date international reference for Al-Li material research, alloy development, structural design and aerospace systems engineering. Provides a complete treatment of the new generation of low-density AL-Li alloys, including microstructure, mechanical behavoir, processing and applications Covers the history of earlier generation AL-Li alloys, their basic problems, why they were never widely used, and why the new third generation Al-Li alloys could eventually replace not only traditional aluminum alloys but more expensive composite materials Contains two full chapters devoted to applications in the aircraft and aerospace fields, where the lighter, stronger Al-Li alloys mean better performing, more fuel-efficient aircraft
Book Synopsis Solid State Precipitation of Aluminium Alloys by : Aigbodion Victor Sunday
Download or read book Solid State Precipitation of Aluminium Alloys written by Aigbodion Victor Sunday and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal analysis is a useful technique for the study of solid phase transformations and has been widely applied to study precipitation in aluminium alloys, but the results are generally interpreted qualitatively. Quantitative interpretation of Differential Scanning Calorimetry(DSC) experiments on ternary aluminium-based alloys has been attempted, and can improve understanding of their thermodynamics and kinetics of precipitation. Three separate, distinctly kinetic models were used in the studying of the precipitation reactions. The analysis should help shed some light on solid state reactions in aluminium alloy, and should be especially useful to professionals in Engineering and Science fields, or anyone else who may be considering usage of aluminium alloys

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aluminium is an important metal in manufacturing, due to its versatile properties and the many applications of both the processed metal and its alloys in different industries. Fundamentals of aluminium metallurgy provides a comprehensive overview of the production, properties and processing of aluminium, and its applications in manufacturing industries. Part one discusses different methods of producing and casting aluminium, covering areas such as casting of alloys, quality issues and specific production methods such as high-pressure diecasting. The metallurgical properties of aluminium and its alloys are reviewed in Part two, with chapters on such topics as hardening, precipitation processes and solute partitioning and clustering, as well as properties such as fracture resistance. Finally, Part three includes chapters on joining, laser sintering and other methods of processing aluminium, and its applications in particular areas of industry such as aerospace. With its distinguished editor and team of expert contributors, Fundamentals of aluminium metallurgy is a standard reference for researchers in metallurgy, as well as all those involved in the manufacture and use of aluminium products. Provides a comprehensive overview of the production, properties and processing of aluminium, and its applications in manufacturing industries Considers many issues of central importance in aluminium production and utilization considering quality issues and design for fatigue growth resistance Metallurgical properties of aluminium and its alloys are further explored with particular reference to work hardening and applications of industrial alloys

Book Synopsis Transformation Kinetics of Delta Prime Precipitation in Aluminum-lithium Alloys by : Ming Sheng Yu
Download or read book Transformation Kinetics of Delta Prime Precipitation in Aluminum-lithium Alloys written by Ming Sheng Yu and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transformation kinetics of the early-stage of phase separation in an supersaturated Al-12 at.% Li alloy has been studied by means of time-resolved synchrotron radiation techniques. The simultaneous measurement of both the temporal evolution of the intensity profile from wide-angle x-ray diffraction (XRD) and small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) is a unique arrangement. The comparison of the integrated intensity from both the SAXS intensity profile and the XRD superlattice reflection provides the sequence of phase separation, such as ordering and decomposition. The combination of the rate of change of the integrated intensity from the superlattice reflection and the variation of ordered domain size suggest the likely division temperature, the congruent ordering temperature, T$sb{rm o}$, and the ordering instability temperature, T$sb{-}$. In addition, the phase separation models, such as Cahn-Hilliard-Cook (CHC), Langer-Bar on-Miller (LBM) and Furukawa have been tested using the results of synchrotron radiation measurements. The dynamical scaling of the SAXS intensity profiles and the power growth law of peak positions and intensities have also been investigated. In the late-stage of phase separation, the study focuses on the coarsening kinetics behavior of Al alloys with 9.7 at.% and 7.9 at.% lithium. The kinetics parameters, i.e. coarsening rate constants are determined from the in situ conventional SAXS measurements. The diffusivity, D, and the activation energy, $gamma$, for the diffusion of lithium atoms within the solid solution can be calculated from these kinetics parameters. The correction for the volume fraction effect and the choice of the appropriate phase diagram can provide consistent and reasonable kinetics parameters.
