Book excerpt: There is a renewed interest in the study of the radiation belts with the recent launch of the Van Allen Probes satellites. The mechanisms that drive the global response of the radiation belts to geomagnetic storms are not yet well understood. Global simulations using magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model fields as drivers provide a valuable tool for studying the dynamics of these MeV energetic particles. ACE satellite measurements of the MHD solar wind parameters are used as the upstream boundary condition for the Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry (LFM) 3D MHD code calculation of fields, used to drive electrons in 2D and 3D test particle simulations. In this study simulations were performed to investigate energization and loss of energetic radiation belt electrons. The response of the radiation belts to a CME-shock driven storm on January 21,2005 during the MINIS balloon campaign was investigated, focusing on precipitation mechanisms by which Ultra Low Frequency (ULF) waves influence the radiation belt population. ULF wave modulation of MeV electron precipitation loss to the atmosphere has been reported in this and other balloon-borne measurements of X-ray bremsstrahlung and was observed in the simulations. Next, a pair of solar wind structures identified as Corotating Interaction Regions (CIR) in solar wind plasma measurements from the ACE satellite were studied during approach to the recent extended solar minimum. Such structures have previously been determined to be geoeffective in producing enhanced outer zone radiation belt electron fluxes, on average greater than at solar maximum. This study provides a comparison of 2D and 3D particle dynamics in MHD simulation fields, incorporating the additional diffusive feature of Shabansky orbit trapping of electrons in the magnetic minima on the dayside above and below the equatorial plane.

Book excerpt: Relativistic Electron Precipitation (REP) in the atmosphere can contribute significantly to electron loss from the outer radiation belts. In order to estimate the contribution to this loss, it is important to estimate the spatial extent of the precipitation region. We observed REP with the 0° Medium Energy Proton Electron Detector (MEPED) on board Polar Orbiting Environmental Satellites (POES), for 15 years (2000-2014) and used both single and multi satellite measurements to estimate an average extent of the region of precipitation in L shell and Magnetic Local Time. In the duration of 15 years (2000-2014), 31035 REPs were found in this study. Events were found to split into two classes; one class of events coincided with proton precipitation in the P1 channel (30-80 keV), were located in the dusk and early morning sector, and were more localized in L shell and magnetic local time (dMLT ~ 0-3 hrs, dL ~ 0.25-0.5), whereas the other class of events did not include proton precipitation, and were located mostly in the midnight sector and were wider in L shell (dL ~ 1-2.5) but localized in MLT (dMLT ~ 0-3 hrs); both classes occurred mostly during the declining phase of the solar cycle and geomagnetically active times. The events located in the midnight sector for both classes were found to be associated with tail magnetic field stretching which could be due to the fact that they tend to occur mostly during geomagnetically active times, or could imply that precipitation is caused by current sheet scattering. Use of POES to infer information about the precipitation energy spectrum was also investigated, despite the coarse energy channels and contamination issues. In order to study the energy specificity of the REP events, a method to fit exponential spectra to the REP events, wherever possible, was formulated and validated through comparisons with SAMPEX observed spectra. 18 events on POES were found to be in conjunction with SAMPEX in the years 2000-04. The exponentially fitted spectra for these events obtained by Comess et al. [2013] were folded through NOAA POES geometric factors obtained by Yando et al. [2011] and the predicted count rates in E3 (>300 keV) were found to be in agreement with the actual data in the MEPED 0°particle telescopes on board NOAA POES. After comparison and validation with SAMPEX an inversion method was developed and applied to the same POES events. Assuming exponential spectra, E3 (>300 keV)/P6 (>700 keV) electron count rate ratios along with P3 , P4 and P5 proton count rates of the POES MEPED 0° telescope were used to determine an e-folding energy for the electron spectra and compared with SAMPEX. The e-folding energies obtained from POES were found to be systematically lower but followed a similar trend as SAMPEX, and it was concluded that E3/P6 ratio could be used as a parameter to define spectral hardness of POES REP events irrespective of spectral shape. Using this parameter, spatial variation of spectral hardness of REP events was investigated. It was found that very soft events were mostly found in the dusk midnight early morning MLT sectors and L~5-7 whereas the hardest events were located in the post noon sectors peaking at L~4-5. The hardest events peaked at lower L shells and less than 10% were coincident with low energy (30-80 keV) proton precipitation which has been previously used as a proxy for EMIC wave particle scattering (e.g. Carson et al. [2012], Sandanger et al. [2007]). The softer midnight events coinciding with proton precipitation were found to be associated with magnetic field stretching. Finally, three case study events on 1st February and 17-18th January 2013, were investigated combining POES with BARREL, CSSWE, GOES and Van Allen Probes data. EMIC wave activity was observed on 17-18 Jan 2013 on GOES and Van Allen Probes and REP was observed in several POES satellites. On 1st February 2013, no evidence of EMIC waves were found but 4 POES satellites observed the REP event along with BARREL. The spatial scales were in agreement with statistical estimates and the exponential fits to REP energy spectra agreed with BARREL data. It was also found that REPs were accompanied by proton precipitation when the satellite was at the edge of the plasmasphere drainage plume irrespective of the presence of EMIC waves.

Since their discovery, the radiation belts have been a subject of intensive theoretical analysis also. Over the years, a semiquantitative understanding of the governing dynamical processes has gradually evol ved. The underlying kinematical framework of radiation-belt theory is given by the adiabatic theory of charged-particle motion [3J, and the interesting dynamical phenomena are associated with the violation of one or more of the kinematical invariants of adiabatic motion. Among the most important of the operative dynamical processes are those that act in a stochastic manner upon the radiation-belt particles. Such stochastic processes lead to the diffusion of particle distributions with respect to the adiabatic invariants. The observational data indicate that some form of particle diffusion plays an essential role in virtually every aspect of the radiation belts.

Book excerpt: Lightning discharges are well known sources of electromagnetic radiation in the frequency range of a few Hz to many MHz, with the most intense radiation typically being in the range of 5--10 kHz. Electromagnetic waves originating in lightning discharges often propagate through the most densely ionized regions of the Earth's atmosphere and populate the radiation belts. High-energy electrons in this region constitute a hazard to the increasing number of scientific and commercial spacecraft that orbit the Earth, and quantitative understanding of this radiation and its sources and losses are thus important. Electromagnetic whistler waves injected into the radiation belts by lightning discharges can pitch-angle scatter the energetic electrons and cause them to precipitate out of their stably trapped radiation belt orbits and onto the dense upper atmosphere of the Earth. This dissertation examines the detection of lighting-induced energetic electron precipitation via long-term analysis of in-situ observations of drift loss cone fluxes (i.e., fluxes destined to be precipitated over the South Atlantic Anomaly within ~2 hours). The primary measurement tool used is an energetic electron detector (IDP) on board the DEMETER satellite--a French micro-satellite in a sun-synchronous low Earth orbit. Energetic electron flux data are analyzed alongside ground-based lightning data recorded by the National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN) to determine the relationship between drift loss cone fluxes and lightning. While lighting-induced electron precipitation events occur globally, the best region for making in-situ observations of fluctuations in drift loss cone fluxes is over the continental United States. Measurements of VLF wave activity in the typical frequency range of lightning-generated whistler waves (5--10 kHz) on DEMETER show a substantial increase of electromagnetic wave power over the United States, particularly during the northern summer months when lightning activity is at its highest. Analysis of particle precipitation data on the DEMETER spacecraft over a three-year period shows that energetic electron fluxes in the drift loss cone exhibit a seasonal dependence consistent with lightning-induced electron precipitation (LEP) being an important source of loss of such energetic radiation.
