Book excerpt: Overaging experiments have been conducted on a commercial grade 2519 Al-Cu alloy at a variety of temperatures and times, with and without prior induced strain. Hardness testing and scanning electron microscopy techniques were used to characterize evolution of microstructure during overaging. The further development of microstructure during thermomechanical processing by warm rolling was also assessed to determine whether the coarse particles produced by overaging could serve as sites for particle stimulated nucleation (PSN) of recrystallization. The thermomechanical processing methods have been shown to produce highly superplastic microstructures in Al-Mg and Al-Mg-Li alloys in previous work at NPS. Optical microscopy and tensile tests were conducted allowing a determination of the effect of the processing on the microstructural evolution and superplastic behavior of the Al-Cu material. Aluminum-Copper Alloys, Superplasticity, Thermomechanical Process.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 38 (thesis year 1993) a total of 13,787 thesis titles from 22 Canadian and 164 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 38 reports theses submitted in 1993, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: This study examines the effects of pre-strain deformation temperature, overaging temperature, and other variations in thermomechanical processing (TMP) on the mean size and size distribution of q-phase precipitate particles in Al alloy 2519. Examination was performed using the scanning electron microscope in the backscattered imaging mode and quantitative image analysis methods were employed. The goal was to find a combination of TMP parameters which produces q-phase particles exceeding a critical diameter for particle stimulated nucleation (PSN) of recrystallization. A necessary prerequisite for superplasticity is a uniformly fine, equiaxed grain size and PSN is theorized to be capable of such grain refinement. Such a microstructure has been developed in Aluminum alloys containing large second phase particles when the alloys are subjected to cold work and recrystallization treatments.

Book excerpt: The structural materials used in airframe and propulsion systems influence the cost, performance and safety of aircraft, and an understanding of the wide range of materials used and the issues surrounding them is essential for the student of aerospace engineering.Introduction to aerospace materials reviews the main structural and engine materials used in aircraft, helicopters and spacecraft in terms of their production, properties, performance and applications. The first three chapters of the book introduce the reader to the range of aerospace materials, focusing on recent developments and requirements. Following these introductory chapters, the book moves on to discuss the properties and production of metals for aerospace structures, including chapters covering strengthening of metal alloys, mechanical testing, and casting, processing and machining of aerospace metals. The next ten chapters look in depth at individual metals including aluminium, titanium, magnesium, steel and superalloys, as well as the properties and processing of polymers, composites and wood. Chapters on performance issues such as fracture, fatigue and corrosion precede a chapter focusing on inspection and structural health monitoring of aerospace materials. Disposal/recycling and materials selection are covered in the final two chapters. With its comprehensive coverage of the main issues surrounding structural aerospace materials,Introduction to aerospace materials is essential reading for undergraduate students studying aerospace and aeronautical engineering. It will also be a valuable resource for postgraduate students and practising aerospace engineers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For all kinds of materials, phase transformations show common phenomena and mechanisms, and often turn a material, for example metals, multiphase alloys, ceramics or composites, into its technological useful form. The physics and thermodynamics of a transformation from the solid to liquid state or from one crystal form to another are therefore essential for creating high-performance materials. This handbook covers phase transformations, a general phenomenon central to understanding the behavior of materials and for creating high-performance materials. It will be an essential reference for all materials scientists, physicists and engineers involved in the research and development of new high performance materials. It is the revised and enhanced edition of the renowned book edited by the late P. Haasen in 1990 (Vol. 5, Materials Science and Technology).

Book excerpt: Friction stir welding (FSW) is a highly important and recently developed joining technology that produces a solid phase bond. It uses a rotating tool to generate frictional heat that causes material of the components to be welded to soften without reaching the melting point and allows the tool to move along the weld line. Plasticized material is transferred from the leading edge to trailing edge of the tool probe, leaving a solid phase bond between the two parts. Friction stir welding: from basics to applications reviews the fundamentals of the process and how it is used in industrial applications.Part one discusses general issues with chapters on topics such as basic process overview, material deformation and joint formation in friction stir welding, inspection and quality control and friction stir welding equipment requirements and machinery descriptions as well as industrial applications of friction stir welding. A chapter giving an outlook on the future of friction stir welding is included in Part one. Part two reviews the variables in friction stir welding including residual stresses in friction stir welding, effects and defects of friction stir welds, modelling thermal properties in friction stir welding and metallurgy and weld performance. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Friction stir welding: from basics to applications is a standard reference for mechanical, welding and materials engineers in the aerospace, automotive, railway, shipbuilding, nuclear and other metal fabrication industries, particularly those that use aluminium alloys. Provides essential information on topics such as basic process overview, materials deformation and joint formation in friction stir welding Inspection and quality control and friction stir welding equipment requirements are discussed as well as industrial applications of friction stir welding Reviews the variables involved in friction stir welding including residual stresses, effects and defects of friction stir welds, modelling thermal properties, metallurgy and weld performance
