Book excerpt: Precaution Why Weep By: Janet Davis Precaution Why Weep was written to encourage and strengthen anyone or anybody that suffers with or become discourage and depress with the cares of this world. Many of us today know or have heard about Jesus, as well there are some that have a form of or a intimate relationship with Him. We as childern of God speak so many vain words with our mouths and our hearts are far from Christ. We continue to play with His feeling, as if He doesn ́t love or hurt like you and me. Lots of us draw close to Him when we need Him, when actually we can ́t survive half of a second without Him. Question: When did Christ command His sheep to stop seeking Him in prayer, fasting, and most of all studing His word? When do we awake out of the sleep that alot of us has been in so long that we don ́t even realize that we are asleep.

Book Synopsis Beware the People Weeping by : Thomas Reed Turner
Download or read book Beware the People Weeping written by Thomas Reed Turner and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1991-09-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first killing of a president in American history, the assassination of Abraham Lincoln shook the nation to its foundations with grief and rage. With one bullet the brief period of good feeling at the end of the Civil War was over. By 1867 the initial belief that the Confederate leadership had engineered the assassination had given way to speculation that Andrew Johnson had been behind the conspiracy. This was followed by bitter attacks on the military trial and on the defense of its two most prominent “victims,” Mrs. Surratt and Dr. Mudd. Most recently, there have been attempts to show that it was the radical faction of Lincoln’s own party that arranged his death. In Beware the People Weeping, Thomas Reed Turner pushes away the elaborate conspiracy theories that have always surrounded Lincoln’s death and uncovers exactly what can be known about the murder and its aftermath. Finding that many historians have worked in ignorance of the context of the events, or distorted the evidence to suit their own ideas about political assassination, Turner looks instead to public opinion of the time—as reflected in newspapers, diaries, letters, sermons, and transcripts of the pretrial investigation and the trial itself—to understand how and why the public and the military reacted as they did. Probing the aftermath of the assassination, Turner tells of the spontaneous outpouring of rage and despair, the reaction in the defeated South, the almost universal conviction that the South was behind the plot, the actions of the authorities in tracking the conspirators, and the trials of the suspects, including that of John Surratt in 1867. A close look at these confused events and an untangling of the controversies that arose in their wake, Beware the People Weeping strips away more than a century of speculation to retell with hard facts the history of Abraham Lincoln’s death.

Book excerpt: "In the entire canon of tough-girl sleuths, gumshoes, PIs, detectives, and investigators there's no one quite like Fritillary Quilter. A New York arson investigator, a sassy, fresh spirit with a nose for arson and an eye for dubious burn patterns, "Tilly" pushes the envelope of the traditional female investigator with a young, hip outlook and indefatigable zeal. "Weeping" is an arson investigator's term, and also the usual state that befalls a fire's grief-stricken survivors. So it's with some surprise, and suspicion, that Tilly meets the seemingly unconcerned Faith Browning, whose sister Dorsey has just burned to death in their family home. When Faith puts in a quick claim without giving the insurance company a chance to look around, the company calls Tilly. Teamed with the arson pro Isaac "Ike" Blessing, Tilly and Ike must sift through the ashes to find the truth."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: "With the end of the Civil War, the nation recommenced its expansion onto traditional Indian tribal lands, setting off a wide-ranging conflict that would last more than three decades. In an exploration of the wars and negotiations that destroyed tribal ways of life even as they made possible the emergence of the modern United States, Peter Cozzens gives us both sides in comprehensive and singularly intimate detail. He illuminates the encroachment experienced by the tribes and the tribal conflicts over whether to fight or make peace, and explores the squalid lives of soldiers posted to the frontier and the ethical quandaries faced by generals who often sympathized with their native enemies, "--Amazon.com.

Book excerpt: In this comprehensive and provocative study of maternal reactions to child death in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa, anthropologist Jónína Einarsdóttir challenges the assumption that mothers in high-poverty societies will neglect their children and fail to mourn their deaths as a survival strategy. Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted from 1993 to 1998 among the matrilineal Papel, who reside in the Biombo region, this work includes theoretical discussion of reproductive practices, conceptions of children, childcare customs, interpretations of diseases and death, and infanticide. Einarsdóttir also brings compelling narratives of life experiences and reflections of Papel women.
