Book excerpt: This technical report covers all aspects of the uses of precast concrete piles - design, manufacture, transport, handling, pitching and driving. Both reinforced and prestressed concrete piles are dealt with and attention is paid to the use of both plan piles and those with enlarged toes. Although the report is a translation of parts of a set of three volumes prodduced in the Netherlands, those parts reproduced are internationally applicable. Special sections deal with the effects of pile driving on adjacent buildings and theor occupants - both as regards vibration and noise.

During the construction of PPPCP, the soil at the proposed pile location is agitated to a loose state and then mixed with cement grout before the installation of a precast prestressed concrete pile. It is an environmentally friendly technique which generates little noise to nearby residents and little disturbance to nearby structures during construction. Moreover, the material cost of PPPCP can be 30% less than that of the steel H-pile with similar design load-carrying capacity. However, the engineering behavior of PPPCP is not well analyzed outside Japan. In this research, a comprehensive study is carried out on two fully instrumented trial PPPCPs and three working PPPCPs installed in Macau. Full-scale pile load test data are available for analysis and the engineering behavior of this new type of pile is investigated. In this study, a new method that used to estimate the ultimate capacity of PPPCP from non-failing load tests is developed. As for the load-settlement characteristics, an empirical equation is proposed to evaluate the elastic settlement of PPPCP and a hyperbolic function is recommended to simulate creep settlement. The shaft and tip resistance of the PPPCP are investigated and the separation between the shaft and tip resistance is made. The distribution and development of shaft resistance along the pile shaft is analyzed and the load transfer mechanism of PPPCP is better understood. A new correlation between the SPT-N value, the effective vertical stress and the unit shaft resistance of PPPCP is proposed. Furthermore, a numerical model is established to simulate the behavior of PPPCP under static load. A PLAXIS 2D model is used to serve this purpose and the simulated load-settlement behavior exhibits a good agreement with the results of static pile load tests. It is observed that the load distribution along the pile shaft simulated by the PLAXIS 2D axisymmetric model is generally in good agreement with the measured distribution. It seems that the PLAXIS 2D model can provide a good simulation of the load transfer mechanism of PPPCP with reasonable accuracy. After this study, the engineering behavior of the newly introduced pile, i.e. PPPCP, is better understood, and this would be beneficial for promoting its application in the industry. Subjects: Concrete piling Prestressed concrete construction

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written to Eurocode 7 and the UK National Annex Updated to reflect the current usage of Eurocode 7, along with relevant parts of the British Standards, Pile Design and Construction Practice, Sixth Edition maintains the empirical correlations of the original—combining practical know how with scientific knowledge —and emphasizing relevant principles and applications of soil mechanics and design. Contractors, geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists responsible for designing and constructing piled foundations can find the most current types of pile, piling equipment, and relevant methods in this latest work. The book summarizes recent changes, including new codified design procedures addressing design parameters and partial safety factors. It also presents several examples, many based on actual problems. Broad and Comprehensive In Its Coverage Contains material applicable to modern computational practice Provides new sections on the construction of micropiles and CFA piles, pile-soil interaction, verification of pile materials, piling for integral bridge abutments, use of polymer stabilising fluids, and more Includes calculations of the resistance of piles to compressive loads, pile groups under compressive loading, piled foundations for resisting uplift and lateral loading, and the structural design of piles and pile groups Covers marine structures, durability of piled foundations, ground investigations, and pile testing Addresses miscellaneous problems such as machinery foundations, underpinning, mining subsidence areas, geothermal piles, and unexploded ordnance Pile Design and Construction Practice, Sixth Edition serves as a comprehensive guide for practicing geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists. This text also works as a resource for piling contractors and graduate students studying geotechnical engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Red Book" presents a background to conventional foundation analysis and design. The text is not intended to replace the much more comprehensive 'standard' textbooks, but rather to support and augment these in a few important areas, supplying methods applicable to practical cases handled daily by practising engineers and providing the basic soil mechanics background to those methods. It concentrates on the static design for stationary foundation conditions. Although the topic is far from exhaustively treated, it does intend to present most of the basic material needed for a practising engineer involved in routine geotechnical design, as well as provide the tools for an engineering student to approach and solve common geotechnical design problems.

Book excerpt: The aim of this state-of-art report is to present current practices for use of precast and prestressed concrete in countries in seismic regions, to recommend good practice, and to discuss current developments. The report has been drafted by 30 contributors from nine different countries. This state-of-art report covers: state of the practice in various countries; advantages and disadvantages of incorporating precast reinforced and prestressed concrete in construction; lessons learned from previous earthquakes; construction concepts; design approaches; primary lateral load resisting systems (precast and prestressed concrete frame systems and structural walls including dual systems) diaphragms of precast and prestressed concrete floor units; modelling and analytical methods; gravity load resisting systems; foundations; and miscellaneous elements (shells, folded plates, stairs and architectural cladding panels). Design equations are reported where necessary, but the emphasis is on principles. Ordinary cast-in-place reinforced concrete is not considered in this report. This fib state-of-the-art report is intended to assist designers and constructors to provide safe and economical applications of structural precast concrete and at the same time to allow innovation in design and construction to continue. This Bulletin N° 27 was approved as an fib state-of-art report in autumn 2002 byfib Commission 7, Seismic design.
