Book Synopsis The Evolving Continents by : Timothy M. Kusky
Download or read book The Evolving Continents written by Timothy M. Kusky and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2010 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume honours the career of Brian F. Windley, who has been hugely influential in helping to achieve our current understanding of the evolution of the continental crust, and who has inspired many students and scientists to pursue studies on the evolution of the continents. Brian has studied processes of continental formation and evolution on most continents and of all ages, and has educated and inspired two generations of geologists to undertake careers in studies of continental evolution. The volume is organized into six sections, including: oceanic and island arc systems and continental growth; tectonics of accretionary orogens and continental growth; growth and stabilization of continental crust; collisions and intraplate processes; Precambrian tectonics and the birth of continents; and active tectonics and geomorphology of continental collision and growth zones.

Book Synopsis Flow Processes in Faults and Shear Zones by : G. Ian Alsop
Download or read book Flow Processes in Faults and Shear Zones written by G. Ian Alsop and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2004 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faults and their deeper level equivalents, shear zones, are localized regions of intense deformation within the Earth. They are recognized at all scales from micro to plate boundary, and are important examples of the nature of heterogeneous deformation in natural rocks. Faults and shear zones are significant as they profoundly influence the location, architecture and evolution of a broad range of geological phenomenao The topography and bathymetry of the Earth's surface is marked by mountain belts and sedimentary basins that are controlled by faults and shear zoneso In addition, faults and shear zones control fluid migration and transport including hydrothermal and hydrocarbon systems. Once faults and shear zones are established, they are often long-lived features prone to multiple reactivation over very large time-scales. This collection of papers addresses lithospheric deformation and the rheology of shear zones, together with processes of partitioning and the unravelling of fault and shear zone histories.

Book Synopsis Lithostratigraphy, Geology and Geochemistry of the Volcanic Rocks of the Maligât Formation and Associated Intrusions on Disko and Nuussuaq, Paleocene of West Greenland by : Asger Ken Pedersen
Download or read book Lithostratigraphy, Geology and Geochemistry of the Volcanic Rocks of the Maligât Formation and Associated Intrusions on Disko and Nuussuaq, Paleocene of West Greenland written by Asger Ken Pedersen and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The upper Cretaceous-Tertiary Nuussuaq Basin in West Greenland contains a many kilometres thick succession of siliciclastic sediments and overlying volcanic rocks. The first studies in the early 19th century were centred on the coal and fossils in the sediments and the minerals in the volcanic rocks, including famous occurrences of native iron. The present focus of interest includes modern stratigraphic and volcanological studies to decipher the basin evolution and support hydrocarbon and mineral exploration. This bulletin presents the lithostratigraphy, geology and geochemistry of teh Paleocene volcanic rocks of the Maligât Formation and its related intrusions on Disko and the Nuussuaq peninsula; it concludes with a detailed discussion of the effects of crustal contamination processes. The Maligât Formation is up to 2000 m thick and comprises four formally defined members and 15 chemically defined informal units. It is mainly composed of basalt lavas but also includes basaltic andesite, andesit and dacite flows and rhyolite tuffs. The silicic rocks and intrusions were produced by contaminiation in high-level magma chambers and commonly contain native iron. The comprehensive descriptions and analysis of each member and unit represent a synthesis of many years of work and are intended to serve as a guide for future studies, including exploration for mineral deposits associated with some units of the formation."--Back cover.
