Specifically, this study examines the perceptions of the pre-service teachers enrolled in the ENG 4800 Teaching Literature in the Secondary School class at Western Michigan University. Areas to be addressed included changes to the pre-service teachers' perceptions of self-efficacy and confidence, when educational technology resources were embedded in a post-secondary class curriculum one semester. The demands placed upon teachers, new or experienced, to effectively integrate technology into classroom instruction has grown exponentially over a relatively brief period. The speed of emerging technology resource development has left many teachers overwhelmed and unprepared to meet these growing demands. The primary goal for this study was to obtain a deeper understanding of the potential benefits to pre-service teachers, when provided with the opportunity to learn how to use educational technology in a content-specific context, prior to using it in their own classroom instruction. Specific objectives for the study included gaining a clearer understanding of pre-service teachers' perceptions, prior to the implementation of the educational technology, the pre-service teachers' perceptions of the resources provided during the study, and the impact the experience had on the subjects' perceptions, following the study.

The case that was investigated in this study is the teacher preparation program at a small comprehensive college located in the upper Great Plains region of the United States. Utilizing a convergent parallel mixed-methods design, both a survey as well as semi-structured interviews provided data to understand pre-service teachers' perceptions of their preparation for technology integration. The TPACK framework for technology integration (Mishra & Koehler, 2006) and self-efficacy theory (Bandura, 1986, 1997) were used as a theoretical framework for understanding pre-service teachers' self-efficacy for technology integration. The results of this study indicate that pre-service teachers generally feel confidence with regard to their abilities to integrate technology, but also feel a sense of pressure to be able to teach with technology. The results further suggest that there are a variety of things teacher educators can do to support pre-service teachers in their learning to integrate technology, including modeling technology integration, providing both formal and informal learning opportunities to develop technological knowledge and skills, and helping pre-service teachers understand the link between technological knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and content knowledge. Additionally, the preservice teachers participating in this study indicated that they believe a practical course in technology integration would help to prepare them for teaching in contemporary classrooms. Book excerpt: This paper analyses pre-service teachers' perceptions of the affordances of new technology after experiencing two social media tools embedded into their coursework. This sociological ethnographic study builds upon previously gathered data that highlighted that 72% of pre-service teachers in the Masters of Teaching degree use personal mobile devices. Personal technology use was high, and the previous survey demonstrated that participants held a positive outlook for technology use in their future classrooms. However, these pre-service teachers had difficulty in articulating an educational vision for this technology. This study draws upon data from 120, second year Masters of Teaching pre-service teachers. Our focus, as academic staff, was to provide opportunities for all pre-service teachers to meaningfully experience the possibilities for learning spaces offered by new technologies. We scaffolded learning opportunities for pre-service teachers into lectures and workshops focusing on two social media tools: "Edmodo" and "Twitter". Participants were surveyed prior to their experiences, and their written reflections on the affordances of "Edmodo" and "Twitter" at the end of the semester were also coded. Personal mobile device use in this group increased, with more than 80% having a smart phone, and also at least one other personal mobile device (i-Pod, Laptop, i-Pad). Data displays a shift in pre-service teachers' perceptions of future use of these technologies within their own classrooms. Their reflections on "Edmodo" and "Twitter" show a refined ability to identify the possibilities of both tools, with many respondents providing a new and favorable vision for using of at least one of these in their future primary classroom practices. This study also outlines for us "where to next" for pre-service teacher preparation for teaching 21st century skills. (Contains 4 tables.).

Book excerpt: The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the perceptions of technology integration by 90 entry level students in a teacher education program. During their field experience placement, candidates observed teachers' integration of technology in the classroom. During the final week of observation, the candidates completed a modified version of BETA 04-05 Teacher Survey (Biennial Educational Technology Assessment). The BETA Teacher Survey is a self-report online instrument developed by eTech Ohio (2004) to assess how technology supports classroom curricular needs. Demographic information was reported and the second part of the survey identified strategies for technology integration. Candidates ranked the frequency of technology use by K-12 teachers and students in the classrooms. A university statistician unfamiliar with the candidates or the course analyzed the data statistically using the SPSS software program. Results indicate that teaching experience had a significant effect on use of technology for data manipulation/organization because teachers with less experience were more apt to use technology for data management. This study illustrates that if teachers possess the requisite technology skills they are more likely to integrate educational technologies in their instructional repertoires which can enhance the learning of all students. It also sheds light on the impact of technological advancements in a variety of academic environments and areas as well as how changes in practice are occurring (or not occurring) in these settings. It is imperative that teacher education ensure that preservice candidates are indeed provided the opportunity to explore and develop effective uses of technology in K-12 classrooms. Additionally, teacher education must promote technology use in authentic contexts through curriculum-based, technology-enhanced field experiences.

It is anticipated that by gaining a better understanding of this complex relationship, there may be a greater appreciation for why more teachers are not using computer technology in ways advocated in the literature. Moreover, this may enable educators to facilitate a better alignment between research, practice, and beliefs in order to provide more effective ways of supporting and documenting teacher change. Results from this study showed that there is a strong positive relationship between computer efficacy, teacher efficacy, and the integration of classroom technology. Results also showed there is evidence that student-centered classroom approaches positively influence how what, and when teachers decide to integrate technology into their classrooms and curriculum. Book excerpt: Reform efforts of the early 21st century emphasizing standardized testing have indirectly led to a movement of curriculum standardization, direct instruction, and ultimately driving teachers to teach "to the test". Research presented in this study supports that PreK-12 students learn best in technology integrated, constructivist learning environments. College-based teacher preparation programs strive to prepare preservice teachers based on this research, yet the environments in which they conduct their internships and learn to implement what they have been taught are littered with barriers often inhibiting success. The purpose of this research study was to examine preservice teacher technology integration in internship-based teaching experiences. Using mixed methodologies, particular focus was placed on the mentor teacher/preservice teacher relationship and its impact on classroom technology integration. The data collected in this study presented contrasting results. Qualitative journal entries indicated cases of preservice teacher technology integration consistent with constructivist teaching practices, while quantitative data indicated the preservice teacher participants' levels of technology integration were consistent with direct instruction. Recommendations are provided to elevate the overall internship-based instructional paradigm from that of direct instruction to more technology-integrated constructivist learning.
