Download or read book The Soybean written by Guriqbal Singh and published by CABI. This book was released on 2010 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The soybean is a crop of global importance and is one of most frequently cultivated crops worldwide. It is rich in oil and protein, used for human and animal consumption as well as for industrial purposes. Soybean plants also play an important role in crop diversification and benefit the growth of other crops, adding nitrogen to the soil during crop rotation. With contributions from eminent researchers from around the world, The Soybean provides a concise coverage of all aspects of this important crop, including genetics and physiology, varietal improvement, production and protection technology, utilization and nutritional value.

Book Synopsis Understanding Options for Agricultural Production by : G.Y. Tsuji
Download or read book Understanding Options for Agricultural Production written by G.Y. Tsuji and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first premise of this book is that farmers need access to options for improving their situation. In agricultural terms, these options might be manage ment alternatives or different crops to grow, that can stabilize or increase household income, that reduce soil degradation and dependence on off-farm inputs, or that exploit local market opportunities. Farmers need a facilitating environment, in which affordable credit is available if needed, in which policies are conducive to judicious management of natural resources, and in which costs and prices of production are stable. Another key ingredient of this facilitating environment is information: an understanding of which options are viable, how these operate at the farm level, and what their impact may be on the things that farmers perceive as being important. The second premise is that systems analysis and simulation have an impor tant role to play in fostering this understanding of options, traditional field experimentation being time-consuming and costly. This book summarizes the activities of the International Benchmark Sites Network for Agrotechnology Transfer (IBSNAT) project, an international initiative funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). IBSNAT was an attempt to demonstrate the effectiveness of understanding options through systems analysis and simulation for the ultimate benefit of farm households in the tropics and subtropics. The idea for the book was first suggested at one of the last IBSNAT group meetings held at the University of Hawaii in 1993.

Download or read book Crop Ecology written by David J. Connor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-28 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food security and environmental conservation are two of the greatest challenges facing the world today. It is predicted that food production must increase by at least 70% before 2050 to support continued population growth, though the size of the world's agricultural area will remain essentially unchanged. This updated and thoroughly revised second edition provides in-depth coverage of the impact of environmental conditions and management on crops, resource requirements for productivity and effects on soil resources. The approach is explanatory and integrative, with a firm basis in environmental physics, soils, physiology and morphology. System concepts are explored in detail throughout the book, giving emphasis to quantitative approaches, management strategies and tactics employed by farmers, and associated environmental issues. Drawing on key examples and highlighting the role of science, technology and economic conditions in determining management strategies, this book is suitable for agriculturalists, ecologists and environmental scientists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation. Worldwide climatic changes have been raising concerns about potential changes to crop yields and production systems. Such concerns include the ability to accommodate these uncertain effects in order to ensure an adequate food supply for an increasing population. Written by leadinginternational experts, this book is the first comprehensive examination of the potential effects climate change, particularly green house gases, will have on agroecosystems. It also reviews the effects such systems have on climate change itself.
Book Synopsis Analysis of Phenolic Plant Metabolites by : P. G. Waterman
Download or read book Analysis of Phenolic Plant Metabolites written by P. G. Waterman and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1994-04-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phenolic plant secondary metabolites have assumed an important position in the examination of the impact of plant chemistry on a wide range of ecological interactions. This book outlines the various classes of phenolic compounds likely to be encountered by biologists, our present knowledge of their role(s), and deals in detail with methods for their quantitation, isolation and identification. Methods of quantitative analyses include detailed descriptions of both chemical and biochemical techniques, and discussion of problems with the interpretation of results. This volume differs from other recent publications on plant phenolics in that it is witten primarily for biologists, both as a non-technical introduction to the chemistry of phenolic compounds and as a practical aid to their analysis by the non-specialist
