Book excerpt: There are numerous books written on prayer but this is the only one that focuses entirely on teaching the reader how to pray entirely for deliverance from crack cocaine, heroin, crystal meth, marijuana, alcohol and sexual sins that accompany drug addiction. The reason that our children, neighborhoods, and households are challenged with drug addiction and drug dealing is because society has wavered from “faithful and effectual fervent prayer” (Js.5:15-17) and now depend on doctors and professional counseling to restore and help the lost deal with the addictions and temptations that surrounds them. To make matters worse our jails and prisons are not overcrowded with addicts, drug dealers, murderers, thieves and robbers simply because of the crimes they commit, but mainly because those committing the crimes have not been educated, taught how to follow the example that Christ set for mankind in Luke 4:1-13 and pray for deliverance from their mindset, drugs and others challenges that cause them to sin against God's commandments. Yes, there are 13 step and other programs that suggest that struggling addicts refer to the name, “higher power”, but truth be told, “There's no other name except the name Jesus associated with the implement of prayer that will result in the deliverance and salvation of man!” (See Acts 16:18; 4:10,12). The Bible clearly tells us that “Christ defeated temptation, Satan by a means open to his humblest follower, THE INTELLIGENT USE OF THE WORD OF GOD”. (See Matt.4: 1, Scofield Study Bible footnotes).

Book excerpt: The Bible tells in in Luke 4:1-13 that Christ overcame the devil's temptation by, saying, "it is written..." followed by applying the appropriate verses of scripture, or promises of God to deliver and strengthen. And just like Christ, people who are being tempted to use heroin, to smoke crystal meth or crack cocaine must apply the appropriate verses, the correct promises of God in the written word to likewise over the urges and temptations thrown at them by the devil! When people, especially those struggling with drug or alcohol addiction, finally wake up and realize that "we are in a war against spirits that provoke and influence rebellious and addicted behavior" (1Chr.21:1; Eph.2:2; 6:12) they will finally be able to break free of the devil's stronghold.

These valuable lessons would prove useful later in my life as I looked for a way out of a bad situation I was in due to bad decisions that I had made. Questioning my self-worth as a child, I turned away from the church trying to find a place to fit in. Not realizing the extent of how much I did not know at the age of twelve, I started to get lost in the world of drugs and alcohol. My addictions became stronger as I got older and experienced a life where not all things worked the way I hoped they would. While my addictions went from drinking beer and smoking marijuana to smoking crack and drinking anything available, a place to fit in became more of a place of isolation for me as I no longer felt comfortable being around most family members if I had something stronger than just a few beers. This was in most cases when I would get high with other addicts or alone because for me a drink was always better with crack. At least that was the lie I would tell myself, along with the lie that my problem wasn't that bad. Finally, after thirty years of addiction, on June 6, 2006, I hit my rock bottom, but I remembered what I had learned as a child about a power above all other powers. I prayed to the highest power, and God, my Father in heaven, made a way for me to get into a drug-and-alcohol treatment program. I went through the program and took what I needed from it with the understanding that words also have power. Because of my faith and what I had learned in church as a child, I refuse to put the words of man. Addicts suffer from a disease for which there's no cure above the word of God. You are more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37) and By his stripes you are healed (1 Peter 2:24). I do not believe that Jesus died for me and rose from the dead with power over all things except an addiction. I believe He came to conquer ALL sin so that all lost sinners who believed in Him and worked on building a personal relationship with Him could be recovered when He returned.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Larry grew up in a small southern town called Minden, shielded from all life's negative influences by his mother and siblings. Growing up in a very Christian home, knowing God, he always longed for the big-city life. But was he ready for it? Was he ready to take on the challenges that came with big-city life? Marrying his high school sweetheart right after school, he dreamed of the glorious life they could have if only he could find a way for them to leave Minden behind. He wanted more out of life, for he knew that one day, with God's blessings, he would become a great man, husband, and father. When he was introduced to an idea about joining the Air Force, he quickly decided that was their ticket out of Minden and a chance to be that great man that he always dreamed of. Shortly after joining the Air Force, he began meeting men from all over. Although he wasn't street-smart and knew very little about what went on outside his little hometown, he was intrigued by their behavior and knowledge of worldly life. He sought to emulate them from their dress, talk, and often bad habits. He slowly began conforming to this world while setting aside all he was taught in church and his upbringing. Unknown to him, the devil began slowly gaining control of his thoughts, thus starting a spiritual warfare in his mind that would last for almost two decades. This spiritual warfare took him and his family through unimaginable times where no man wants to go. Big-city life was exciting, but without God, it came with a price.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of a 2018 Catholic Press Association Award: Sacraments. (Second Place). In the first book to directly integrate the Twelve Steps with the practice of Catholicism, Scott Weeman, founder and director of Catholic in Recovery, pairs his personal story with compassionate straight talk to show Catholics how to bridge the commonly felt gap between the Higher Power of twelve-step programs and the merciful God that he rediscovered in the heart of the sacraments. Weeman entered sobriety from alcohol and drugs on October 10, 2011, and he's made it his full-time ministry to help others who struggle with various types of addiction to find spiritual wholeness through Catholic in Recovery, an organization he founded and directs. In The Twelve Steps and the Sacraments, Weeman candidly tackles the struggle he and other addicts have with getting to know intimately the unnamed Higher Power of recovery. He shares stories of his compulsion to find a personal relationship with God and how his tentative steps back to the Catholic Church opened new doors of healing and brought him surprising joy as he came to know Christ in the sacraments. Catholics in recovery and those moving toward it, as well as the people who love them will recognize Weeman's story and his spiritual struggle to personally encounter God. He tells us how: Baptism helps you admit powerlessness over an unmanageable problem, face your desperate need for God, and choose to believe in and submit to God’s mercy. Reconciliation affirms and strengthens the hard work of examining your life, admitting wrongs, and making amends. The Eucharist provides ongoing sustenance and draws you to the healing power of Christ. The graces of Confirmation strengthen each person to keep moving forward and to share the good news of recovery and new life in Christ. Weeman's words are boldly challenging and brimming with compassion and through them you will discover inspiration, hope, sage advice, and refreshingly practical help.

Book excerpt: Named a Best Book of the Year by The New Yorker and The Boston Globe An authoritative, illuminating, and deeply humane history of addiction—a phenomenon that remains baffling and deeply misunderstood despite having touched countless lives—by an addiction psychiatrist striving to understand his own family and himself “Carl Erik Fisher’s The Urge is the best-written and most incisive book I’ve read on the history of addiction. In the midst of an overdose crisis that grows worse by the hour and has vexed America for centuries, Fisher has given us the best prescription of all: understanding. He seamlessly blends a gripping historical narrative with memoir that doesn’t self-aggrandize; the result is a full-throated argument against blaming people with substance use disorder. The Urge is a propulsive tour de force that is as healing as it is enjoyable to read.” —Beth Macy, author of Dopesick Even after a decades-long opioid overdose crisis, intense controversy still rages over the fundamental nature of addiction and the best way to treat it. With uncommon empathy and erudition, Carl Erik Fisher draws on his own experience as a clinician, researcher, and alcoholic in recovery as he traces the history of a phenomenon that, centuries on, we hardly appear closer to understanding—let alone addressing effectively. As a psychiatrist-in-training fresh from medical school, Fisher was soon face-to-face with his own addiction crisis, one that nearly cost him everything. Desperate to make sense of the condition that had plagued his family for generations, he turned to the history of addiction, learning that the current quagmire is only the latest iteration of a centuries-old story: humans have struggled to define, treat, and control addictive behavior for most of recorded history, including well before the advent of modern science and medicine. A rich, sweeping account that probes not only medicine and science but also literature, religion, philosophy, and public policy, The Urge illuminates the extent to which the story of addiction has persistently reflected broader questions of what it means to be human and care for one another. Fisher introduces us to the people who have endeavored to address this complex condition through the ages: physicians and politicians, activists and artists, researchers and writers, and of course the legions of people who have struggled with their own addictions. He also examines the treatments and strategies that have produced hope and relief for many people with addiction, himself included. Only by reckoning with our history of addiction, he argues—our successes and our failures—can we light the way forward for those whose lives remain threatened by its hold. The Urge is at once an eye-opening history of ideas, a riveting personal story of addiction and recovery, and a clinician’s urgent call for a more expansive, nuanced, and compassionate view of one of society’s most intractable challenges.

Book excerpt: In his own words, former NBA and overseas pro Chris Herren tells how he nearly lost everything and everyone he loved, and how he found a way back to life. Powerful, honest, and dramatic, this remarkable memoir,Basketball Junkie, is harrowing in its descent, and heartening in its return. I was dead for thirty seconds. That's what the cop in Fall River told me. When the EMTs found me, there was a needle in my arm and a packet of heroin in the front seat. At basketball-crazy Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts, junior guard Chris Herren carried his family's and the city's dreams on his skinny frame. His grandfather, father, and older brother had created their own sports legends in a declining city; he was the last, best hope for a career beyond the shuttered mills and factories. Herren was heavily recruited by major universities, chosen as a McDonald's All-American, featured in a Sports Illustrated cover story, and at just seventeen years old became the central figure in Fall River Dreams, an acclaimed book about the 1994 Durfee team's quest for the state championship. Leaving Fall River for college, Herren starred on Jerry Tarkanian's Fresno State Bulldogs team of talented misfits, which included future NBA players as well as future convicted felons. His gritty, tattooed, hip-hop persona drew the ire of rival fans and more national attention: Rolling Stone profiled him, 60 Minutes interviewed him, and the Denver Nuggets drafted him. When the Boston Celtics acquired his contract, he lived the dream of every Massachusetts kid—but off the court Herren was secretly crumbling, as his alcohol and drug use escalated and his life spiraled out of control. Twenty years later, Chris Herren was married to his high-school sweetheart, the father of three young children, and a heroin junkie. His basketball career was over, consumed by addictions; he had no job, no skills, and was a sadly familiar figure to those in Fall River who remembered him as a boy, now prowling the streets he once ruled, looking for a fix. One day, for a time he cannot remember, he would die.
