Within and without the confines of organized Christianity the interests of the spiritual life are coming to their own. Our reigning philosophies are idealistic. Religion demands to be applied more and more to life, to the enlargement and the ennoblement of man. In this reaction against the deadening materialism of the past generation the problem of prayer is coming to the front, and once more challenges the powers of faith and thought. Book excerpt: BOOKS on Prayer may be roughly divided into those which treat of its scientific aspect, whether it be from the standpoint of philosophy or from that of psychology, and those which are written with a purely devotional purpose. In these pages I have endeavoured to elucidate the meaning and value of prayer as a creative process, whereby the man who prays and his world are made anew.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. The nature of the interpolations in View has been already defined. There is no reference to any private1 intercessions or devo tions of the Celebrant, but to the direct interpolation of portions of other Offices. Far better than all instructions and precepts about prayer is this simple model. Using this, we learn both how to pray and what to pray for. And when we have learned this prayer, it will be time to consider how we shall expand the teaching of our Lord. If it is "after this manner" we are to pray, then who can restrain prayer on the ground of lack of time for devotion? This is the "five words with understanding" preferable to ten thousand of formality or repetition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Temple: A Book of Prayers The writer would offer these prayers as the best contribution he can make towards the solu tion, not only of the problem of prayer, but of the general problem of personal religion. One can argue about prayer and religion indefinitely, to very little effect; and although the writer is convinced that prayer is the highest exercise of the rational mind and religion is the very basis of all thought; yet it is impossible to give a full rational account of religion before one has awak ened to the needs of one's own soul. And prayer is the very essence of religion; and the only way to solve the problem of prayer is by learning to pray. To those who have yet to take the initial steps in the way of prayer, it may perhaps be permitted to make one or two recommendations; for it is the earnest hope of the writer that this book will find its way outside the circle of those who need no such instruction. He received a common school education at Shelbyville and was admitted to the bar soon after his majority. He practiced law until called to preach the Gospel at the age of twenty-four. His first pastorate was Monticello. Mo., Circuit. It was while serving as pastor of Brunswick, Mo., that war was declared and the young minister was made a prisoner of war because he would not take the oath of allegiance to the Federal Government. He was sent to St. Louis and later transferred to Memphis, Tenn. Finally securing his release, he traveled on foot nearly one hundred miles to join General Pierce's command in Mississippi and was soon after made chaplain of the Fifth Missouri Regiment, a position he held until near the close of the war, when he was captured and held as prisoner at Nashville, Tenn. After the war Rev. E. M. Bounds was pastor of churches in Tennessee and Alabama. In 1875 he was assigned to St. Paul Methodist Church in St. Louis, and served there for four years. In 1876 he was married to Miss Emmie Barnette at Eu-faula, Ala., who died ten years later. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sunday School Prayer Book The Book of Common Prayer contains no provision for worship in the Sunday-school, and the multitude of published liturgies would seem to be sufficient evidence that a prayer book, especially adapted to children, is a universal want in the church. The more the Sunday-school system is perfected, the more will this want be felt. The children practically form a congregation by themselves, with a worship and teach ing of their own. They need, therefore, a prayer-book of their own not by any means as a substitute for the great manual, (any more than attendance at Sunday-school is a substitute for attendance at church, ) but rather as an intro duction to it a sort of primer prayer-book, so closely resem bling it in form and arrangement as to engage their interest and affection, and yet so child-like in character as to be out grown with childhood. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Prayer: How and Why We Pray Books in almost countless numbers have been written on the subject of prayer, and yet there are justifiable reasons for adding another to the list. There is an instinctive inclination in people who know God, or know about him, to call upon him for help in times of deep distress or approaching calamity, even though they may not often do so under more favorable circumstances. Those who have yielded themselves to the Lord, and those who are seeking to know his love, have a longing desire to know how to approach him, and how to pray in order to have a knowledge that he hears and will answer. The import of this volume is to meet that demand by enabling the reader to form a more intimate acquaintance with the Lord, and to know better how to enter into a holy and sacred communion with him. By looking back through the annals of time, and noting what others have been able to accomplish through prayer, one is given an inspiration of faith and encouragement, in like manner, to make use of the means within his reach, and appropriate the promises of God so as to derive the proffered benefits. There is, I believe, a widespread and earnest desire on the part of teachers of the Bible to do more than has lately been done for the teaching of Christian doctrine. The complaint that doctrine is dry is due to the way it is taught, even more than to the spirit of the age Anything is dry that is disorderly or unreal. In this volume the Doctrine of Prayer is presented in an orderly sequence, and contact with reality is maintained at every step by means of illustration or example. Book excerpt: The power of prayer for spiritual renewal and personal transformation is at the core of all religious traditions. Because Hasidic literature contains no systematic manual of contemplative prayer, the texts included in this volume have been culled from many sources. From the teachings of the Hasidic Masters—the Ba'al Shem Tov, the Maggid Dov Baer of Meidzyrzec, and their immediate disciples—the editors have gleaned "hints as to the various rungs of inner prayer and how they are attained." Hasidism, the Jewish revivalist movement that began in the late eighteenth century, saw prayer as being at the heart of religious experience and was particularly concerned with the nature of a person’s relationship with God. The obstacles to prayer discussed by the Hasidic masters—distraction, loss of spirituality, and inconstancy of purpose—feel very close to concerns of our own age. Through advice, parables, and explanations, the Hasidic masters of the past speak to our own attempts to find meaning in prayer.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prayer-Book: Its History, Language and Contents There is no book, with the exception of the Bible itself, to which English Churchmen are so warmly attached as the Book of Common Prayer, and yet it is to be feared that even among educated Churchmen there is much ignorance of its history, its teaching, its language, and the principles of its construction. This is, surely, a matter for grave consideration. Bearing in mind the large use we make of the prayer-book (a larger use than is made of any corresponding book in any other Church), it. Must be highly important that every member of the Church should, as far as possible, be' in possession of such knowledge as would enable him to fairly comprehend its scope, meaning, and authority.
