Book excerpt: The System of Pragmatic Idealism is of special importance for Nicholas Rescher's philosophical work, because here he has presented the systematic approach at once. Dedicated to his 70th birthday a group of European and U.S-american philosophers discuss the main topics of Rescher's philosophical system. The contributions which are presented here for the first time and Nicholas Rescher's responses cover the most important topics of philosophy and give a deep and detailed insight into the strenght of Rescher's pragmatic idealism. This volume is of interest for philosophers studying Rescher's philosophy and for all those who are interested in systematic philosophy and the vividnes of pragmatism and idealism in present philosophy.

Among the most influential American thinkers, Peirce took his existential graphs to be his greatest contribution to human thought. The manuscripts and letters from 1895–1913, most of which are published here for the first time, testify the richness and open-endedness of his theory of logic and its applications. They also invite us to reconsider our ordinary conceptions of reasoning as well as the conventional stories told about the evolution of modern logic. This first part of the third volume (Volume 3/1) of the Logic of the Future series contains Peirce's 1904–1909 writings on his mature philosophy of pragmaticism, which is grounded upon the principles of logical analysis as provided by existential graphs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work manages to present a complete and informative overview of Nicholas Rescher’s philosphy. A prominent representative of contemporary pragmatism and of 20th century’s thought at large, Rescher wrote an impressive amount of volumes and essays on a wide variety of philosophical topics. The present book purports to make his theses and theories accessible in one single volume. Moreover, it provides an apparatus of references to the relevant literature produced by Rescher’s critics, and positions his work in the wider setting of its links with various contemporary American and European philosophers. The mixture of pragmatism and idealism, typical of Rescher’s stance, is carefully taken into account, along with his contributions to logic, philosophy of science, metaphysics, theory of knowledge, ethics, social and political philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Idealism, Pragmatism, and Feminism provides an account of the life and writings of Ella Lyman Cabot (1866-1934), a woman who received formal training, but not formal recognition, in the field of classical American philosophy. It highlights the themes of idealism, pragmatism and feminism as they emerged in the course of career as an educational reformer and ethicist that spanned nearly four decades. Cabot's writings, developed in graduate seminars at Harvard and Radcliffe at the turn of the century complement, and in many cases anticipate, the thinking of the "fathers" of the American philosophical cannon: Charles Sanders Peirce, Josiah Royce, William James, and John Dewey. Her formal philosophical writing focuses on the concepts of growth, creativity, and the moral imagination--a fact that is especially interesting given that these concepts are developed by a woman who faced serious obstacles in her personal and intellectual development. Indeed, these concepts are not merely philosophical ideals, but practical tools that Ella Lyman Cabot used to negotiate the gender roles and intellectual marginalization that she faces at the turn of the century. The discipline of philosophy was very slow to incorporate the insights of women into its self-definition. An analysis of the writings of Ella Lyman Cabot reveals this point, but also the pointed ways in which she sought to express her genuinely creative insights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complete reference edition. A new philosophical system created by Sorin Cerin. Its principles are: 1. The only true philosophy is the one accepting that Man does neither know the Truth, and implicitly, nor philosophy. 2. Man shall never neither know the Absolute Truth nor the Absolute Knowledge because his entire existence is based on the Illusion of Life. 3. Any philosophical system or philosopher which will pretend that says the Truth is liar. 4. The Coaxialism is, by excellence, the philosophy that does NOT pretend that it speaks the Truth, yet that accepts applications which sustain the reporting of the Illusion of Life to the Truth. 5. The Essence of the Truth consists in its reflection at the Elements appeared before its, as are those of Open Knowledge coming from the State of Fact. 6. The Coaxialism accepts operation with the opposites of the opposites of the Existence, with or without to be necessary the reporting to it, determining the Coaxiology. 7. Each Opposite has at Infinite another Opposite identical to it. 8. With as, an Opposite, is farther, so, between it and the Element opposable are inserted a larger number of opposites, with so the similarities between them will be more pronounced, and, with as, the number of opposites intercalated between the two Elements, will be smaller, with so, the contrasts between them will be more pronounced. 9. How can we speak of Universes without substrate in Existence, we can speak of the Knowledge without substrate in essence, hence, without subject. 10. The factor will always be the opposite of the infinity, face to which it will report as finite, just as the Knowledge is reported to the Un-knowledge, and the life to Death. In understanding coaxial, the Factor will be equivalent to God, the Unique Creator but and, by chance, face of his worlds. 11. In the worlds of each Creator Factor and Unique by Chance it will reflect all other Creator Factors and Unique by Chance under form of numbers, from ONE, which is the Primordial Factor, up to an infinite minus ONE of theCreator Factors and Unique Chance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicholas Rescher's interest in issues of social philosophy, now dating back over forty years, have resulted in four previous books: Distributive Justice (New York: Bobbs Merrill, 1966), Welfare: the Social Issues on Philosophical Perspective (Pittsburgh: University of Pittsburgh Press, 1972), Public Concerns (Lanham, MI: Rowman & Littlefield, 1996), and Fairness (New Brunswick, NJ: Transaction Publishers, 2002). Additionally, however, he has during this time also written more than a dozen essays on various particular problems and issues of this domain-usually in response to the needs of some special occasion. The aim of the present volume is to collect this material together in coordinative conjunction. The resultant book will not only offer a panorama of Rescher's views on some of the key issues of the field, but also convey a sense of the procedural ways and means by which Rescher think that philosophical deliberations can serve to shed some instructive light on such ever-controversial matters. For Rescher is convinced in theory and has sought to illustrate in practice that constructive thinking in this domain calls for implementing a quantitative approach from a moral perspective, and that neither the measurable quantities not the intangible values of the situation can be overlooked in a cogent assessment of the issues. It is his hope that these essays will confirm the justice of this conviction.
