Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are at increased risk for developing symptoms of depression. To date, few research studies have examined factors likely to contribute to the depressive symptomatology experienced by children with ASD. Previous investigations have suggested that language deficits, particularly deficits in pragmatic language, may be associated with socioemotional problems, such as depression, in typically developing children. However, this relationship has never been investigated among children with ASD. The current study utilized hierarchical multiple regression to investigate the relationship between pragmatic language ability and depressive symptoms among 50 children with ASD between the ages of 7 and 17. The researchers hypothesized that pragmatic language ability would account for a significant portion of the variance in depressive symptomatology exhibited by the sample of participants. The investigators predicted that children with better pragmatic language ability would exhibit fewer symptoms of depression. Results of the study provided partial support for this hypothesis. When predicting parent-reported symptoms of depression, including a parent rating scale of pragmatic language ability significantly increased the predictive value of the model. This variable uniquely accounted for a significant portion of the variance in parent-reported depressive symptoms. In contrast, a performance-based indicator of pragmatic language skills was not a useful contributor to the model.

Book excerpt: The ability to communicate effectively and efficiently while maintaining mutual understanding is a fundamental aspect of human-to-human interaction. Studies have shown that individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) face challenges in areas of social communication skills, such as aspects of referential communication; or the ability to refer to things in such a way that a listener will know what the speaker is describing. The current study used data from a preexisting Barrier study to compare the referential communication abilities of school-aged children with ASD to those of neurotypical children (NT). Referential communication was observed during a barrier task, where participants sat across an opaque barrier from a communication partner and used language to refer to objects the partner could not see. Effectiveness and efficiency were coded and characterized quantitatively in the results and qualitatively in the discussion. Effectiveness was observed through the participants' use of strategy-switching, and by the use of uninformative utterances. Measures of efficiency included a subset of strategy switching timing data, as well as the production of redundancies. Results demonstrated that groups did not significantly differ in measures of strategy switching or timing; however, group differences did occur in the use of uninformative and redundant language. By using broad measures that capture communication quality across the entire task, the current honors capstone project builds upon previous research by accounting for the dynamic nature of human-to-human interaction, which relies not only on the behaviors of the speaker but on their interlocutor, and how those behaviors evolve across the interaction.

In line with this, a lot of research has already been done about language and ASD. In this study, we investigated whether texts of Dutch speaking adolescents with ASD (aged 12-18 years) are (automatically) distinguishable from texts written by typically developing peers. The aim of this exploratory study was twofold: firstly, we wanted to know if we could find specific characteristics in texts of adolescents with ASD. The challenge here was to create a method that automatically extracted linguistic features from texts, instead of annotating them by hand. We looked for simple linguistic features, but also for syntactic, semantic as well as discourse features. Secondly, we examined the possibility to use these features in an automated classification task for diagnostic purposes. Differences between the ASD group and control group were tested for statistical significance for all features except for n-grams and some semantic word categories. Only 11 out of 68 investigated features showed significant differences between the ASD and control group. These were mainly syntactic features. In the classification task, we found that our features could increase the baseline accuracy, but only to a limited extent. By adding our features to the word and character n-grams of the baseline approach, we could achieve accuracy of 72.14%. When our features werent combined with word and character n-grams, we could reach accuracy of 62.86%, which is still significantly higher than chance.

Book excerpt: Impairments in social communication are one of the defining characteristics of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). However, there are only a handful of studies that investigate interventions to improve social conversation skills in adolescents with ASD. To address this gap in the literature, this study investigated the outcome of a self-management intervention to ask on-topic questions during naturalistic social conversation. To examine the effect of this novel intervention, a non-concurrent multiple baseline across participants design was employed. Three adolescents with ASD, ages 12, 13, and 15, participated in this study. The data supported that with intervention, the participants were able to increase the number of questions they initiated in conversation and improved in their ability to use question-asking to maintain a single topic of conversation. The intervention also resulted in a substantial increase in the percentage of participant utterances that contained a statement or question that maintained the topic and continued the conversation. Additionally, the participants decreased their use of minimal responses during conversation, suggesting that the participants were able to play a more active role in the conversation. Support for fading of the intervention and generalization to new conversational partners was found. Lastly, results from a social validity measure indicated that there were widespread gains in global pragmatic behavior when comparing conversations at baseline and generalization. The findings are discussed in relation to theoretical implications and clinical significance.

The adaptations of the reviewed interventions were illustrated by creating an instructional video to highlight how to use the interventions and their adaptations with an adult with ASD. The author and participant consider the video development and final product to be a success; however, until peer-reviewed efficacy studies that explore the effects of these intervention adaptations with young-adults with ASD are conducted, the author cannot assert that the intervention adaptations discussed will be effective therapy strategies for young adults with ASD.

Three groups comprising high-functioning ASD, low-functioning ASD, and typically developing 5-year-old Persian-speaking children were tested on comprehension of passive sentences. Results suggest that while low-functioning children with ASD might be impaired in the area of grammar, high-functioning children with ASD are not. The new results are compared to those of two recent studies on comprehension of passives in Greek-speaking and English-speaking subjects with ASD (Perovic et al., 2007; Terzi, et al., to appear).
