Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should a given motor task be learned in parts or as a whole? The answers to this question lies within the complexity of the motor task. A discrete sequential motor task was used to examine if learning constituent parts in two practice orders would produce similar performance upon two retention tests of the whole task. A third group that only practiced the whole task was used as a control. The results showed that during the first retention, the part group which practiced the whole task in the reverse order performed significantly faster than the other part group on the execution time and total time measures, and also produced very similar performance to the control group. The results suggest that the retroactive interference induced by the particular practice schedule plays a large role in the learning of the parts of the tasks, which manifests upon the transfer to the whole task in the performance of the group which practiced the parts in reverse order. In addition, this experiment showed that a simple task of low complexity had a part group and control (whole) group perform the task very similarly, producing somewhat contradictory evidence to Naylor and Brigg's original assertions on task complexity in part versus whole learning. Further studies should also focus on whether blocked order part groups produce similar results to the serial part groups utilized in this experiment.

In some cases, we can improve our performance by selecting a more successful behavior that is already part of our available repertoire. Skill learning, on the other hand, refers to a slower process that results in improving the ability to perform a behavior, i.e., it involves the acquisition of a behavior that was not available to the controller before training. Skill learning can take place both in the sensory and in the motor domains. Sensory skill acquisition in perceptual learning tasks is measured by improvements in sensory acuity through practice-induced changes in the sensitivity of relevant neural networks. However, experiences with the procurement and use of training simulators has not always been as successful, often owing to a lack of knowledge of didactics and of training programme development, and also to inadequate simulator specifications. The Handbook of Simulator-based Training represents the first comprehensive overview of the European state of the art in simulator-based training. It also comprises a well-founded and systematic approach to simulator-based training and the specification of simulator requirements. The multi-disciplinary research project described in this book combines the expertise of specialists in human factors, information systems, system design and engineering from 23 research and industrial organizations from five countries - France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, the UK. The authors have synthesized and documented the project results to ensure that this handbook provides not only many valuable guidelines, but more importantly a common frame of reference. It will be a key resource for the many specialists who are concerned with simulator-based training: researchers, engineers, and users; military training institutes and training system development departments; military staff responsible for the procurement of training devices and simulators; the simulator industry; the training research community; and the human factors and ergonomics community.
