Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intent of this field guide is to assist organizations, step by step, in implementing a QMS in conformance with ISO 9001:2015, whether “from scratch” or by transitioning from ISO 9001:2008. Within the guide each sub-clause containing requirements is the focus of a two-page spread that consistently presents features that fulfill the requirements listed below. This book examines each sub-clause of clauses 4–10 of ISO 9001:2015, which contain the requirements, with a visual representation provided in flowchart format on the facing page. This field guide will: - Provide a user-friendly guide to ISO 9001:2015’s requirements for implementation purposes - Identify the documents/documentation required, along with recommendations on what to consider retaining/adding to a QMS during ISO 9001:2015 implementation - Guide internal auditor(s) regarding what to ask to verify that a conforming and effective QMS exists - Direct management on what it must do and should consider to satisfy ISO 9001:2015’s enhanced requirements and responsibilities for top management - Depict step by step what must occur to create an effective, conforming QMS What separates this field guide from most other books on ISO 9001:2015 and its implementation are the flowcharts showing the steps to be taken in implementing a QMS to meet a sub-clause’s requirements. As the flowcharts themselves can be overwhelming when you first look at them, a text box appears with each flow chart that explains pertinent facts and/or what the flowchart represents and how it is to be used.

Amting Directorate General Information Society, European Commission, Brussels th Under the 4 Framework of European Research, the European Systems and Soft ware Initiative (ESSI) was part of the ESPRIT Programme. This initiative funded more than 470 projects in the area of software and system process improvements. The majority of these projects were process improvement experiments carrying out and taking up new development processes, methods and technology within the software development process of a company. In addition, nodes (centres ofexper tise), European networks (organisations managing local activities), training and dissemination actions complemented the process improvement experiments. ESSI aimed at improving the software development capabilities of European enterprises. It focused on best practice and helped European companies to develop world class skills and associated technologies to build the increasingly complex and varied systems needed to compete in the marketplace. The dissemination activities were designed to build a forum, at European level, to exchange information and knowledge gained within process improvement ex periments. Their major objective was to spread the message and the results of experiments to a wider audience, through a variety ofdifferent channels. The European Experience Exchange (I;UR~X) project has been one ofthese dis semination activities within the European Systems and Software Initiative.~UR~X has collected the results of practitioner reports from numerous workshops in Europe and presents, in this series of books, the results of Best Practice achieve ments in European Companies over the last few years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introductory course in Software Engineering remains one of the hardest subjects to teach largely because of the wide range of topics the area encompasses. We have believed for some time that we often tend to teach too many concepts and topics in an introductory course resulting in shallow knowledge and little insight on the application of these concepts. And Software Engineering is finally about the application of concepts to efficiently engineer good software solutions. We believe that an introductory course in Software Engineering should focus on imparting to students the knowledge and skills that are needed to successfully execute a commercial project of a few person-months efforts while employing proper practices and techniques. It is worth pointing out that a vast majority of the projects executed in the industry today fall in this scope—executed by a small team over a few months. I also believe that by carefully selecting the concepts and topics, we can, in the course of a semester, achieve this. This is the motivation of this book. The goal of this book is to introduce to the students a limited number of concepts and practices which will achieve the following two objectives: Teach the student the skills needed to execute a smallish commercial project. Provide the students with the necessary conceptual background for undertaking advanced studies in software engineering, through courses or on their own. I have included in this book only those concepts that I believe are foundational and through which the two objectives mentioned above can be met. Advanced topics have been consciously left out. As executing a software project requires skills in two dimensions—engineering and project management, this book focuses on key tasks in these two dimensions and discusses concepts and techniques that can be applied to effectively execute these tasks. The book is organized in a simple manner, with one chapter for each of the key tasks in a project. For engineering, these tasks are requirements analysis and specification, architecture design, module-level design, coding and unit testing, and testing. For project management, the key tasks are project planning and project monitoring and control, but both are discussed together in one chapter on project planning as even monitoring has to be planned. In addition, the book contains one chapter that clearly defines the problem domain of Software Engineering and another Chapter that discusses the central concept of software process which integrates the different tasks executed in a project. Each chapter opens with some introduction and what the reader can expect to learn from the chapter. For the task covered in the chapter, the important concepts are first discussed, followed by a discussion of the output of the task, the desired quality properties of the output, and some practical methods and notations for performing the task. The explanations are supported by examples, and the key learnings are summarized in the end for the reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people are confused about corrective action. They know it’s a requirement for compliance to standards such as ISO 9001. In some cases, the mandate is imposed by customers or regulatory agencies. Compounding this misunderstanding is that much of what has been written about the corrective action process is targeted toward manufacturing organizations, with the predictable references to tooling, production equipment, inspection of materials, storage issues, component design and the like. For software organizations, the product is intangible, and the processes may be electronically defined, derived, and controlled. Corrective action and the manner in which it is implemented needs to be explained specifically for software, both in language and supporting documentation. This practical handbook discusses the hows and whys of corrective action, with a particular focus on its application in software environments. It also illustrates how the process is integrated into the various other functions of the organization. Plus, Corrective Action for the Software Industry includes a CD-ROM with PDF forms you can use in your corrective action process. The forms are: Corrective action request form Root cause analysis form Action plan form Follow-up form

Book excerpt: Systems Engineering and Management for Sustainable Development is a component of Encyclopedia of Technology, Information, and Systems Management Resources in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. This theme discusses: basic principles of systems engineering and management for sustainable development, including: cost effectiveness assessment; decision assessment, tradeoffs, conflict resolution and negotiation; research and development policy; industrial ecology; and risk management strategies for sustainability. The emphasis throughout will be upon the development of appropriate life-cycles for processes that assist in the attainment of sustainable development, and in the use of appropriate policies and systems management approaches to ensure successful application of these processes. The general objectives of these chapters is to illustrate the way in which one specific issue, such as the need to bring about sustainable development, necessarily grows in scope such that it becomes only feasible to consider the engineering and architecting of appropriate systems when the specific issue is imbedded into a wealth of other issues. The discussions provide an illustration of the many attributes and needs associated with the important task of utilizing information and knowledge, enabled through systems engineering and management, to engineer systems involving humans, organizations, and technology, in the support of sustainability. These two volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College students Educators, Professional practitioners, Research personnel and Policy analysts, managers, and decision makers and NGOs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Software configuration management (SCM) is one of the scientific tools that is aimed to bring control to the software development process. This new resource is a complete guide to implementing, operating, and maintaining a successful SCM system for software development. Project managers, system designers, and software developers are presented with not only the basics of SCM, but also the different phases in the software development lifecycle and how SCM plays a role in each phase. The factors that should be considered and the pitfalls that should be avoided while designing the SCM system and SCM plan are also discussed. In addition, this third edition is updated to include cloud computing and on-demand systems. This book does not rely on one specific tool or standard for explaining the SCM concepts and techniques; In fact, it gives readers enough information about SCM, the mechanics of SCM, and SCM implementation, so that they can successfully implement a SCM system.
