Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prevalence of anorectal disorders in the general population is probably much higher than that seen in clinical practice. Anorectal diseases have for a long time been considered of little interest, with their treatment considered of little prestige despite the social impact they cause to patients. Proctology was initiated late and developed slowly over the years. However, in the last 20 years, a renewed interest has begun, and today, we can say that proctology is a specialized branch of general surgery. This book "Proctological Diseases in Surgical Practice" provides a practical introduction to proctology, with a particular attention to the topics that have not yet been investigated. This book may be useful for the general physician as well as for the specialist.

Book Synopsis The ASCRS Textbook of Colon and Rectal Surgery by : Scott R. Steele
Download or read book The ASCRS Textbook of Colon and Rectal Surgery written by Scott R. Steele and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-24 with total page 1269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third edition text provides a completely revised and updated new version of this unique, modern, practical text that covers the strategic evaluation, specific approaches, and detailed management techniques utilized by expert colorectal surgeons caring for patients with complex problems–whether they result from underlying colorectal disease or from complications arising from previous surgical therapy. The format follows that of both a “how to” manual as well as an algorithm-based guide to allow the reader to understand the thought process behind the proposed treatment strategy. By making use of evidence-based recommendations, each chapter includes not only background information and diagnostic/therapeutic guidelines, but also provides a narrative by the author on his/her operative technical details and perioperative “tips and tricks” that they utilize in the management of these complex surgical challenges. Distinctive to this book, is the reliance on experts in the field including past presidents of the ASCRS, as well as multiple other national and internationally recognized surgeons, to lend their personal insight into situations where data may be more sparse, but individual and collective experience is paramount to making sound decisions and thereby optimizing patient outcomes. The text includes chapters on the assessment of risk and methods utilized to minimize perioperative complications. In addition, it incorporates sections covering the medical and surgical therapies for abdominal, pelvic and anorectal disease. Moreover, the technical challenges of managing complications resulting from the original or subsequent operations is addressed. The underlying focus throughout the text is on providing pragmatic and understandable solutions that can be readily implemented by surgeons of varying experience to successfully treat complex colorectal problems. However, it also goes beyond the technical aspects of colorectal surgery and includes special sections highlighting the essence of a surgeon; covering aspects involving the medical-legal, ethical, and economic challenges confronting surgeons. Throughout the text, each author provides an ongoing narrative of his/her individual surgical techniques along with illustrations and diagrams to “personally” take the reader through the crucial steps of the procedure, and key points of patient care inherent to that topic. Additionally, where appropriate, links to online videos give the reader an up-front look into technical aspects of colorectal surgery.

Book Synopsis Atlas of Rectoscopy and Coloscopy by : P. Otto
Download or read book Atlas of Rectoscopy and Coloscopy written by P. Otto and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first portion of this work is devoted to a consideration of the practical aspects of the proctoscopic examination and thus presents the indications for performing a proctologic evaluation, the information that may be obtained from the patient's medical history, an example of a preprinted data form for use in the recording of the physician's findings, the preparation and positioning of the patient, and the preliminary examination of the anus including the digital rectal examination. The instruments needed to perform proctoscopy are uncomplicated, and the basic tools are inexpensive. The instruments currently available do not really differ from each other except in minor details. In the text, therefore, we have only described the prototype instruments, and details about the pro posed advantages of any particular instrument can be obtained from its manufac turer. The concluding portion of the text describes how the proctoscopic and colonoscopic examinations are performed. The atlas itself is a topographical stratification of the various diseases that may involve the perianal region, the anus, and the adjacent portions of the large bowel as well as their classification according to morphologic criteria, for example, inflammatory bowel diseases and tumors. Since many pathologic findings in the rectum and sigmoid colon are comparable to those in the upper portions of the large bowel, a duplication of these proctoscopic and colonoscopic illustrations has been avoided.

In addition, translational research and targeted therapies have improved the outcome and prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer. In the present Research Topic, we are encouraging experienced colleagues to submit original research articles, case studies, and review articles regarding the main points of debate of proctology and colorectal cancer.
