Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rev. Tom Carroll, as Senior Pastor of The Lakeway Church, Lakeway (Austin), Texas, invited the Rev. Dr. James L. Stoner, a member of the congregation, to write a brief meditation every week to be printed on the front cover of the weekly Sunday bulletins. This was to encourage worshippers as they entered their pews to sit, read and meditate until the worship service began. Dr. Stoner, along with his wife Janice, accepted the invitation and wrote weekly meditations from 1996 to 2003. It was suggested that these meditations be printed in book form for use by families for devotions, women's and men's study and prayer groups, as devotionals to precede church meetings, youth group worship, etc. Dr. Stoner published the first book, Down-to-Earth Meditations That Give You a Lift, in 1999. This second book was begun before Dr. Stoner's death in 2007, and was finished by his wife, Janice, and friends of the family. The book is a compilation of short, one-page discourses on a variety of subjects, designed to calm your spirit and help you reflect on bringing your life into accord with God's plan for you.

Book excerpt: “When something is bothering you—a person is bugging you, a situation is irritating you, or physical pain is troubling you—you must work with your mind, and that is done through meditation. Working with our mind is the only means through which we’ll actually begin to feel happy and contented with the world that we live in.” —Pema Chödrön Pema Chödrön is treasured around the world for her unique ability to transmit teachings and practices that bring peace, understanding, and compassion into our lives. With How to Meditate, the American-born Tibetan Buddhist nun presents her first book exploring in depth what she considers the essentials for a lifelong practice. More and more people are beginning to recognize a profound inner longing for authenticity, connection, and aliveness. Meditation, Pema explains, gives us a golden key to address this yearning. This step-by-step guide shows readers how to honestly meet and openly relate with the mind, embrace the fullness of our experience, and live in a wholehearted way as we discover: - The basics of meditation, from getting settled and the six points of posture to working with your breath and cultivating an attitude of unconditional friendliness - The Seven Delights—how moments of difficulty can become doorways to awakening and love - Shamatha (or calm abiding), the art of stabilizing the mind to remain present with whatever arises - Thoughts and emotions as “sheer delight”—instead of obstacles—in meditation “I think ultimately why we practice is so that we can become completely loving people, and this is what the world needs,” writes Pema Chödrön. How to Meditate is an essential book from this wise teacher to assist each one of us in this virtuous goal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pioneered by spiritual master Eknath Easwaran, passage meditation consists of memorizing an inspirational spiritual passage and then sending it deep into consciousness through slow, sustained attention. It keeps meditation fresh and varied because readers can select the passages - from one tradition or many - that embody their chosen ideals. Many readers also enjoy the passages for their poetic and intellectual appeal. This form of meditation offers all the richness and depth of traditional wisdom, together with a practical method for bringing that wisdom into daily life. The book situates passage meditation as part of Easwaran's eight-point program that, based on traditional spiritual practices but adjusted for modern lifestyles, shows readers how to stay calm and focused at work and home. This edition includes a new preface of previously unpublished material by Easwaran and an epilogue that explains the story behind the book and invites new readers to join the author on this adventure in the ''world within.''

Book excerpt: When our thoughts are left to wander aimlessly, they tend to take us for a ride wherever they please, with little regard for whether or not we want to go there. This leaves us feeling mentally and emotionally drained due to negative thought patterns that just won't go away. We spend more time regretting the past and worrying about the future than we do enjoying the present moment. Every day, millions upon millions of people suffer needlessly from self-inflicted stress that comes as the result of a restless, out of control mind. It's like they're trapped in a self-made prison, stuck in a state of near constant anxiety and unease. After several severe panic attacks and near constant anxiety that persisted for over half a year, I saw firsthand the effects of an out of control mind. When the mind is restless, all else suffers. Thankfully, there is a solution: meditation. After learning about meditation, I managed to get rid of my panic attacks and anxiety, improve my focus and mental clarity, and bring so much more depth and richness into my life that I had to write a book about it and share what I've learned. This book was written as a complete, science-backed, beginner's guide to the practice of meditation for those that want to quiet their minds and bring more peace into their lives. I wrote this book in simple, easy to follow language that is perfect for both beginners as well as seasoned practitioners who want a fresh perspective. It offers simple but powerful tips to help ease stress, improve cognition and boost self-esteem.
