Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dhivehi, the language of the Maldives, has received little attention in the linguistic literature, and no other comprehensive grammar of the standard language has yet been published. This work describes the phonology, unique orthography, morphology, and syntax of standard Dhivehi. Plentiful examples with native orthography, Roman transliteration, and morpheme-by-morpheme glossing illustrate the various features of the language. This grammar will be of use both to linguists and to students of Dhivehi.

Book Synopsis The Dhivehi Language by : Sonja Fritz
Download or read book The Dhivehi Language written by Sonja Fritz and published by Ergon Verlag. This book was released on 2002 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Synopsis Serving Library Users from Asia by : John Hickok
Download or read book Serving Library Users from Asia written by John Hickok and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-06-12 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asian populations are among some of the fastest growing cultural groups in the US. While books on serving other target groups in libraries have been published (e.g., disabled, Latino, seniors, etc.), few books on serving library users of Asian heritage have been written. Thus the timely need for this book. Rather than a generalized overview of Asians as a whole, this book has 24 separate chapters—each on 24 specific Asian countries/cultures of East, Southeast, and South Asia—with a wealth of resources for understanding, interacting with, outreaching to, and serving library users of each culture. Resources include cultural guides (both print and online), language helps (with sample library vocabulary), Asian booksellers, nationwide cultural groups, professional literature, and more. Resources and suggestions are given for all three types of libraries—public, school, and academic—making this book valuable for all librarians. The demographics of each Asian culture (numbers and distribution)—plus history of immigration and international student enrollment—is also featured. As a bonus, each chapter spotlights a US public, school, and academic library providing model outreach to Asian library users. Additionally, this book provides a detailed description and analysis of libraries in each of the 24 Asian countries. The history, development, facilities, conditions, technology, classification systems, and more—of public, school, and academic libraries—are all discussed, with detailed documentation. Country conditions influencing libraries and library use are also described: literacy levels, reading cultures, languages and writing systems, educational systems, and more. Based on the author’s 15 years of research and travels to Asia, this work is a must-have for all librarians.

Download or read book Exploring Multilingualism and Multiscriptism in Written Artefacts written by Szilvia Sövegjártó and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-05-06 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores multilingualism and multiscriptism in a great variety of writing cultures, offering an in-depth analysis of how diverse languages and scripts seamlessly intertwine within written artefacts. Insights into scribal practices are particularly illuminating in that respect, especially when exploring artefacts originating from multicultural communities and regions where distinct writing traditions intersect. The influence of multilingualism and multiscriptism on these writing cultures becomes evident, with essays spanning various domains, from the mundane aspects of everyday life to the realms of scholarship and political propaganda. Scholars often relegate these phenomena, despite being frequently encountered, to the status of exceptions compared to the more prevalent monolingualism and monoscriptism. However, in daring to challenge this viewpoint, this book emphasises the profound significance and relevance of multilingualism and multiscriptism in shaping the development of languages, cultures, and societies across Asia, Africa, and Europe. It caters to a diverse readership keen on delving into the intricacies of these phenomena within this rich tapestry of writing cultures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an estimated 1.6 million English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners in the UK, and over 5 million in the USA, EAL research is urgently needed to inform practice. This edited volume investigates the multifaceted elements that shape EAL pedagogy and research in a variety of settings and research areas, including linguistic ability influences on subject-specific skills, integrating learners’ home languages into classroom environments, and the importance of supporting EAL teachers in the classroom. In doing so, the contributors provide an international perspective on the emerging field of EAL research. The research-based chapters detail fundamental concerns related to EAL learner education. The text is composed of five parts: Part I explores the question of what is EAL and how a definition can shape policy construction; Part II examines the challenges EAL learners face in the classroom, including the use of first languages and the relative impact learner language proficiency has on subject-specific classes; Part III discusses the challenges involved with preparing learners to study in an EAL environment; Part IV investigates concerns relating to supporting EAL teachers in the classroom; and Part V brings together the insights from the previous chapters and provides a road map for future research in the field. The volume draws on researcher expertise from a variety of universities and institutions worldwide. It explores diverse language backgrounds in multilingual contexts. It covers empirical studies with pedagogical, policy, and further research implications. The volume represents a single resource invaluable for EAL teachers, trainers, and trainees, as well as researchers in education, language learning and teaching, bilingualism and multilingualism, and second language acquisition.
