Book excerpt: Clare Rees’s Practical Demonology is a chilling YA novel set in a world overrun by plague and demons—and a group of teens doing anything they can to survive. There have always been castles in the valley, and the people have always been under threat. They’ve always needed those thick walls, the protection of that enclosing stone. Non feels like she needs it more than most, because her mother was infected by the demons that live in the woods. As the doctor’s daughter, Non had planned a career in medicine—partly to please her father, but also because it would keep her inside the protective walls of the citadel. When plague strikes the citadel, all the teenagers are evacuated to the ruined Cirtop Castle. While there, she’s given the opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to study the demons that she’s always feared. But will she be brave enough to take it? In the footsteps of Jelly, Rees’s brilliant and original debut novel, comes a new story of survival and community—and just a little bit of literal guts. “This fantasy with a side of horror offers an original take on demons, a faux medieval setting, and an anxious protagonist whose perceptive, amusing voice carries the narrative with aplomb . . . A clever and atmospheric read.”—Kirkus Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demonology – the intellectual study of demons and their powers – contributed to the prosecution of thousands of witches. But how exactly did intellectual ideas relate to prosecutions? Recent scholarship has shown that some of the demonologists’ concerns remained at an abstract intellectual level, while some of the judges’ concerns reflected popular culture. This book brings demonology and witch-hunting back together, while placing both topics in their specific regional cultures. The book’s chapters, each written by a leading scholar, cover most regions of Europe, from Scandinavia and Britain through to Germany, France and Switzerland, and Italy and Spain. By focusing on various intellectual levels of demonology, from sophisticated demonological thought to the development of specific demonological ideas and ideas within the witch trial environment, the book offers a thorough examination of the relationship between demonology and witch-hunting. Demonology and Witch-Hunting in Early Modern Europe is essential reading for all students and researchers of the history of demonology, witch-hunting and early modern Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exorcism is more widespread in contemporary England than perhaps at any other time in history. The Anglican Church is by no means the main provider of this ritual, which predominantly takes place in independent churches. However, every one of the Church of England dioceses in the country now designates at least one member of its clergy to advise on casting out demons. Such `deliverance ministry' is in theory made available to all those parishioners who desire it. Yet, as Francis Young reveals, present-day exorcism in Anglicanism is an unlikely historical anomaly. It sprang into existence in the 1970s within a church that earlier on had spent whole centuries condemning the expulsion of evil spirits as either Catholic superstition or evangelical excess. This book for the first time tells the full story of the Anglican Church's approach to demonology and the exorcist's ritual since the Reformation in the sixteenth century. The author explains how and why how such a remarkable transformation in the Church's attitude to the rite of exorcism took place, while also setting his subject against the canvas of the wider history of ideas.

Book excerpt: Denounced by neighbors and scrutinized by demonologists, the early modern French witch also confessed, self-identified as a witch and as the author of horrific deeds. What led her to this point? Despair, solitude, perhaps even physical pain, but most decisively, demonology's two-pronged prosecutorial and truth-seeking confessional apparatus. This book examines the systematic and well-oiled machinery that served to extract, interpret, and disseminate witches' confessions in early modern France. For the demonologist, confession was the only way to find out the truth about the clandestine activities of witches. For the witch, however, trial confessions opened new horizons of selfhood. In this book, Virginia Krause unravels the threads that wove together the demonologist's will to know and the witch's subjectivity. By examining textual and visual evidence, Krause shows how confession not only generated demonological theory but also brought forth a specific kind of self, which we now recognize as the modern subject.

Book excerpt: The magick of demons can lead to a life of success, power and extraordinary peace. Demons will demolish enemies, enrich bold ventures, satisfy material desires, and provide you with wisdom, charisma, healing and persuasive dignity. The beauty of demonic magick is that spiritual growth arises from material pleasure. If these are works of darkness, they bring great light. Demons of Magick provides you with three rituals for working with the seventy-two demons of Goetia. The first method is a way to petition for a simple result. The second method is Connective Evocation, where you sense the presence of the demon, to obtain knowledge. The third method provides you with the instructions for a Full Evocation, with the demon brought to visible appearance. Each of the seventy-two demons is proficient in several areas, and all of their powers can be used alone or in combination. You have thousands of sophisticated powers at your disposal. Gordon Winterfield says, 'My intent in creating this book has been to offer something genuinely original, and unobtainable elsewhere, based on the wisdom of experienced, practicing occultists. I have no interest in peddling the same weary methods that can be found elsewhere. It is therefore unavoidable that the contents of this book will challenge much of what has been said on the subject. The magick in this book is a modernized, workable method, and will violently contradict many beloved theories and beliefs. This book may offend you, but if you are open-minded, I believe you will find a method that works for you quite readily.' You will discover: The secret Evocation Keys for attracting the demon to you. The names of 288 angels used to constrain the demons. 144 demonic and angelic seals. 72 colored sigils for working the rituals. The Ritual Opening that calls on five archangels. Words of Power for achieving altered states of consciousness. The safest and simplest methods for evoking demons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics World Book of the Year A Financial Times, Sunday Times, and Telegraph Best Science Book of the Year What is life? For generations, scientists have struggled to make sense of this fundamental question, for life really does look like magic: even a humble bacterium accomplishes things so dazzling that no human engineer can match it. Huge advances in molecular biology over the past few decades have served only to deepen the mystery. In this penetrating and wide-ranging book, world-renowned physicist and science communicator Paul Davies searches for answers in a field so new and fast-moving that it lacks a name; it is a domain where biology, computing, logic, chemistry, quantum physics, and nanotechnology intersect. At the heart of these diverse fields, Davies explains, is the concept of information: a quantity which has the power to unify biology with physics, transform technology and medicine, and force us to fundamentally reconsider what it means to be alive—even illuminating the age-old question of whether we are alone in the universe. From life’s murky origins to the microscopic engines that run the cells of our bodies, The Demon in the Machine journeys across an astounding landscape of cutting-edge science. Weaving together cancer and consciousness, two-headed worms and bird navigation, Davies reveals how biological organisms garner and process information to conjure order out of chaos, opening a window onto the secret of life itself.

Witch hunts in Africa and Asia show the scope of the problem. The deliverance practices of pentecostal and charismatic churches are widely controversial and their effects are rather ambiguous. The contributions in this volume, written by experts and practitioners from four continents, analyze these phenomena from the perspectives of intercultural theology, anthropology, and ethnology, and also describe the responses of Catholic and Protestant churches. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1645-7, John Stearne led the most significant outbreak of witch-hunting in England. As accusations of witchcraft spread across East Anglia, Stearne and Matthew Hopkins were enlisted by villagers to identify and eradicate witches. After the trials finally subsided in 1648, Stearne wrote his only publication, A confirmation and discovery of witchcraft, but it had a limited readership. Consequently, Stearne and his work fell into obscurity until the 1800s, and were greatly overshadowed by Hopkins and his text. This book is the first study which analyses Stearne’s publication and contextualises his ideas within early modern intellectual cultures of religion, demonology, gender, science, and print in order to better understand the witch-finder’s beliefs and motives. The book argues that Stearne was a key player in the trials, that he was not a mainstream ‘puritan’, and that his witch-finding availed from contemporary science. It traces A confirmation’s reception history from 1648 to modern day and argues that the lack of research focusing on Stearne has resulted in misrepresentations of the witch-finder in the historiography of witchcraft. This book redresses the imbalance and seeks to provide an alternative reading of the East Anglian witch-hunt and of England’s premier witch-hunter, John Stearne.

Book excerpt: Where there was effort, there will be ease. Where there was fear, there will be control.Where there was lack, there will be wealth. If you fear evil, know that there is no evil in this grimoire other than the evil that you bring. Be at ease with your desires, and you will not falter. The practical magick in this book gives you powers that include influence and control, with magick for money, sex, passion, and seduction. There are powers of persuasion, charm, and trust, alongside those for healing, guidance, wisdom, and peace. The demons enable you to solve legal problems, finding justice and improving your willpower. You will discover protection, bindings, and ways to improve personal skills and creativity. For those who seek greater control, there is a sequence of corruption and cursing rituals and methods for causing disease and mental suffering. Other powers create illusion or concealment and even manipulate time and reality itself. Working with demons is safe when you accept that the demons do not need to be restrained or controlled. A demon wants to fulfill its destiny by helping you obtain what you desire. When you get what you want, that is what the demon wants. This is the true harmony of magick. When you are clear about your desire, there is no risk in surrendering to the power of this magick. You are not selling your soul or making a pact with the devil, but connecting to a legion of consciousness that rewards desire, choice, and determination. Working as The Order of The Unveiled Faces we have performed magick with the powers of Lucifer and The Hidden Demons since 1955. Our intention is to clarify the mysteries and dispel the myths. For those who seek magick, we swear an oath to provide you only with the methods that we know to be true. This is not another book about the demons of Goetia, but one that reveals the Legion of Lucifer. There are more than 100 demons in this book, and most are unknown outside of the secret orders. We reveal the full details of our source materials so you can see how these demons were hidden, and how they were found. You will have the ability to work with hundreds of unique powers. Open your mind, and you will be granted the power to shape, guide, and transform your reality.

Book excerpt: Europe's best-known mage and contemporary occult author, Frater U∴D∴, shares his extensive magical expertise in the companion volume to his highly acclaimed High Magic. Previously unavailable in English, High Magic II has been eagerly awaited by ceremonial magicians, mages, and Hermetic practitioners. This comprehensive guide explores a variety of magical topics--mirror magic, sigil magic, shamanism, magical orders, mudras, folk magic, and divination--in a modern, non-dogmatic way. The integrated, progressive approach of this book on high magic is designed to help the reader develop a holistic understanding of the underlying magical theories and a true mastery of the magical techniques. Themes in the text recur, focusing on different aspects of core topics but taking the reader further along each time, using the format proven effective in High Magic. High Magic II also delves into magic and yoga, magic in the Bible, the Kabbalah, forms of initiation, and the magic of ancient Egypt and the late Hellenistic period. Many provocative practices are addressed, including demonic magic and combat magic. Some of the techniques have never before appeared in an English-language book.
