Book excerpt: The 4th International Conference on Security in Communication Networks 2004 (SCN2004)washeldatthe“DioceseHall”oftheArchdioceseofAmal?-Cavade’ Tirreni and the “Armorial Bearings Hall” of the Archbishop Palace in Amal?, Italy, on September 8–10, 2004. Previous conferences also took place in Amal? in 1996, 1999 and 2002. The conference aimed at bringing together researchers in the ?elds of cr- tography and security in communication networks to foster cooperation and the exchange of ideas. The main topics included all technical aspects of data security, including: anonymity,authentication,blockciphers,complexity-basedcryptography,cry- analysis, digital signatures, distributed cryptography, hash functions, identi?- tion, implementations, keydistribution, privacy, publickeyencryption, threshold cryptography, and zero knowledge. The Program Committee, consisting of 21 members, considered 79 papers and selected 26 for presentation; one of them was withdrawn by the authors. These papers were selected on the basis of originality, quality and relevance to cryptography and security in communication networks. Due to the high number of submissions, paper selection was a di?cult and challenging task, and many good submissions had to be rejected. Each subm- sion was refereed by at least three reviewers and some had four reports or more. We are very grateful to all the program committee members, who devoted much e?ort and valuable time to read and select the papers. In addition, we gratefully acknowledge the help of colleagues who reviewed submissions in their areas of expertise. They are all listed on page VII and we apologize for any inadvertent omissions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone wants privacy and security online, something that most computer users have more or less given up on as far as their personal data is concerned. There is no shortage of good encryption software, and no shortage of books, articles and essays that purport to be about how to use it. Yet there is precious little for ordinary users who want just enough information about encryption to use it safely and securely and appropriately--WITHOUT having to become experts in cryptography. Data encryption is a powerful tool, if used properly. Encryption turns ordinary, readable data into what looks like gibberish, but gibberish that only the end user can turn back into readable data again. The difficulty of encryption has much to do with deciding what kinds of threats one needs to protect against and then using the proper tool in the correct way. It's kind of like a manual transmission in a car: learning to drive with one is easy; learning to build one is hard. The goal of this title is to present just enough for an average reader to begin protecting his or her data, immediately. Books and articles currently available about encryption start out with statistics and reports on the costs of data loss, and quickly get bogged down in cryptographic theory and jargon followed by attempts to comprehensively list all the latest and greatest tools and techniques. After step-by-step walkthroughs of the download and install process, there's precious little room left for what most readers really want: how to encrypt a thumb drive or email message, or digitally sign a data file. There are terabytes of content that explain how cryptography works, why it's important, and all the different pieces of software that can be used to do it; there is precious little content available that couples concrete threats to data with explicit responses to those threats. This title fills that niche. By reading this title readers will be provided with a step by step hands-on guide that includes: Simple descriptions of actual threat scenarios Simple, step-by-step instructions for securing data How to use open source, time-proven and peer-reviewed cryptographic software Easy to follow tips for safer computing Unbiased and platform-independent coverage of encryption tools and techniques Simple descriptions of actual threat scenarios Simple, step-by-step instructions for securing data How to use open source, time-proven and peer-reviewed cryptographic software Easy-to-follow tips for safer computing Unbiased and platform-independent coverage of encryption tools and techniques

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Electrical Engineering-ESAT at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven regularly runs a course on the state of the art and evolution of computer security and industrial cryptography. The rst course took place in 1983, the second in 1989, and since then the course has been a biennial event. The course is intended for both researchers and practitioners from industry and government. It covers the basic principles as well as the most recent - velopments. Our own interests mean that the course emphasizes cryptography, but we also ensure that the most important topics in computer security are covered. We try to strike a good balance between basic theory and real-life - plications, between mathematical background and judicial aspects, and between recent technical developments and standardization issues. Perhaps the greatest strength of the course is the creation of an environment that enables dialogue between people from diverse professions and backgrounds. In 1993, we published the formal proceedings of the course in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series (Volume 741). Since the el d of cryptography has advanced considerably during the interim period, there is a clear need to publish a new edition. Since 1993, several excellent textbooks and handbooks on cryptology have been published and the need for introductory-level papers has decreased. The growth of the main conferences in cryptology (Eurocrypt, Crypto, and Asiacrypt) shows that interest in the eld is increasing.
