Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Alternating Currents and Power Transmission The correct treatment of a subject like alternating Co currents has been regarded, with much truth, as being consistently mathematical on all occasions. The fact I of the matter is, that however mathematical the treatment of the theory may seem to be, the practice is within the scope of any earnest readers intelligence. In other words, opinions are apt to differ as to what is the correct treatment of a subject. To the student of academic forms, mathematics in this case would be the only reason for the treatment being given any consideration at all. To the practical man, interested in the most explicit and, to him, the least mathematical presentation possible, academic forms are looked upon askance. In consequence, the line of division is strongly drawn between the reading matter palatable to the mental taste of one and the other. Calculus is naturally a useful and time-saving tool in making an analysis, but how many regard it as a readily comprehended form of expression in connection with(s, ordinary phraseology and practical, everyday work? There must be, instead of this, a departure if possible, one which is made only to suit those for whom such a departure is absolutely essential under the circumstances. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Power Transmission: A Practical Treatise for Practical Men This volume is designed to set forth in the simplest possi ble manner, the fundamental facts concerning present prae tice in electrical power transmission. Busy men have little time to spend in discussing theories of which the practical results are known, or in following the derivation of formulae which no one disputes. The author has therefore endeavored, in introducing such theoretical considerations as are necessary, to explain them in the most direct way practicable; using proximate methods of proof when precise and general ones would lead to mathematical complications without altering the conclusion for the purpose in hand, and stating only the results of investigation when the processes are undesirably complicated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Alternating Currents and Alternating Current Testing This volume deals in an elementary and practical manner with the principles of alternating currents and alternating-current machinery. It is hoped that it may prove of special use to students in technical schools and colleges in connection with their laboratory work, and to young engineers engaged in handling or testing alternating-current machinery. The writer hopes that the book may also appeal to a wider range of readers who wish to gain some practical insight into alternating-current working. He believes that the experimental method of treatment is for this purpose the one best fitted to convey exact and concrete ideas, even to the student who is unable himself to carry out the measurements described. He has thus aimed at producing a text-book on the principles of alternating-current working, as well as a companion to the laboratory or test house. The experiments are described in great detail, so as to enable the conclusions derived from them to be followed by the reader who has not the means for obtaining experimental results of his own. It will be seen that the use of the higher mathematics has been avoided, except in the final chapter on curve analysis, and, as far as possible, a treatment based on actual results and examples has been employed. With regard to the selection of the experiments, some of the earlier ones have been given mainly for the sake of the principles involved, or as exercises in calculation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alternating Currents in Theory and Practice Though there are numerous books dealing with the Principles of Alternating Currents, the writer has on many occasions, when recommending a text book to students, found a difficulty in selecting one which, while giving a sufficiently full account of the laws governing the flow of alternating currents in circuits, also includes an account of the several types of alternating current machines. It is hoped that the present book will fill the gap, since, while the fundamental principles of the alternating current circuit are adequately considered, sufficient matter concerning machines and appliances is given to enable readers who have worked through the book to proceed at once to a specialised study of the particular machine or appliance in which they are more immediately interested. Many students, in fact the majority, desire to take up the study of alternating currents with a very inadequate knowledge of mathematics. In view of this fact, which is to be greatly regretted and which constitutes one of the greatest difficulties of students and teachers alike, the calculus has not been used in the body of the book; it has, however, been used in a few footnotes, mainly with the idea of showing students what excellent examples of the use of elementary calculus are furnished by the subject under consideration. In order to lead up to the subject of polyphase alternating currents, it will be advisable to consider, in the first place, the general principles which underlie the working of all alternating currents of electricity, whether single phase or polyphase; and it is proposed to devote this and the following chapter to an elementary study of single-phase currents; the object being to point out the essential differences between direct and alternating currents, and explain the various effects peculiar to alternate-current working. (1) Definition. - An alternating current is - as indicated by the name - a current which, instead of being unidirectional, such as the current produced by a battery or a continuous-current dynamo, flows first in one direction and then in the opposite direction in regular succession. In other words, it is a current which, starting from zero value, increases in strength in a positive direction until it reaches its maximum positive value; it then dies down to zero value, after which it rises to its maximum negative value, and again falls to zero; this process being repeated in a periodic manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Power Transmission: Principles and Calculations, Including a Revision of Overhead Electric Power Transmission A portion of the material which was originally contained in the Appendix has been incorporated in the text; but much of the first edition has been entirely omitted, either because its inclusion is no longer necessary owing to the rapid strides that have been made of late years in the general knowledge of electrical power transmission, or because it has been replaced by new material believed to be of more value to the student or practical engineer. The chapter describing the Thury system of transmission by continuous currents has been retained with only slight changes and additions. It has not been deemed expedient to omit this entirely because, although few American engineers have taken the trouble to familiarize themselves with this system of trans mission, there are conditions under which it has certain in disputable advantages which European engineers have not been slow to recognize. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Alternating Currents This book has been developed from notes on Alternating Currents used for several years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with the junior students in Electrical Engineering. The portions of the notes dealing with single-phase currents were originally written by Professor H. E. Clifford, Gordon McKay Professor of Electrical Engineering at Harvard University, who was formerly Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The general arrangement and much of the material of these portions of the book arc substantially in the same form as originally written. No attempt has been made to include problems other than those used to illustrate the principles discussed, as two sets of problems on alternating currents, much more comprehensive than could have been incorporated in the book, were already published by Professor W. V. Lyon under the titles "Problems in Electrical Engineering" and "Problems in Alternating Current Machinery." The author wishes to express his indebtedness to Professor H. E. Clifford for the care with which he edited the manuscript and read the proof. The author also wishes to thank Professor W. V. Lyon for his many suggestions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alternating-Current Circuit: An Introductory and Non-Mathematical Book for Engineers and Students The matter is, of course, a very important one to electrical students; and it also abounds in difficulties, many of which arise from the fact that authorities are by no means agreed as to the explanation of the various phenomena here dealt with. In a work written from a practical or engineering standpoint, such as this is, it is almost absolutely necessary to look upon electricity as a something which flows along the conductor, as both explanation and comprehension are rendered much easier thereby. The student of advanced theories will consequently find little to interest him herein, except in a technical sense. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alternating Current Transformer The following pages originated from a course of University lectures. It is hoped that the book will be of use to the engineer and general reader. Some knowledge of elementary alternating currents is presupposed. I have found that the student who grasps the theory of the transformer has little difficulty with the more complicated actions and reactions taking place in the induction motor, and is also helped in his study of synchronous apparatus. Chapters I and II are merely introductory. Chapters III to V, carefully studied, should give the reader a thorough knowledge of the transformer. The tests in Chapter VI should be carried out by the student on a few commercial types. The method of design in Chapter VII is offered as a probable improvement over that usually given in text books. I wish to thank the manufacturers for the loan of cuts used in Chapter X. Thanks are also due the publishers who have maintained their reputation for sparing no effort or expense to make the book mechanically as perfect as possible. I am indebted to Mr. A. S. Kalenborn for reading proofs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
