Book excerpt: Both issues, poverty reduction and environmental degradation, are considered as the greatest global challenges of twenty-first century. Developing countries, which are the primary sufferers, are formulating and implementing different policies and programmes to address these problems. Most of the developing countries have signed for achieving Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), an ambitious global development agenda, designed by the United Nations in 2000, in national level by 2015. This analyses the progress of Nepal towards MDGs, particularly, poverty reduction and environmental sustainability, and reviews the policies, programmes and activities. The analysis highlights the challenges and opportunities to achieve environment and poverty related to MDGs. The study also identifies how its goals are internalized into other policies and programmes, formulation and their implementation and activities, and what the causal relationships between poverty and environment in rural and urban areas of Nepal are. The analysis also highlights the situation of synergic efforts made by Nepal's government to address these challenges in cost effective manner.

Book excerpt: The Millennium Development Goals, adopted at the UN Millennium Summit in 2000, are the world's targets for dramatically reducing extreme poverty in its many dimensions by 2015 income poverty, hunger, disease, exclusion, lack of infrastructure and shelter while promoting gender equality, education, health and environmental sustainability. These bold goals can be met in all parts of the world if nations follow through on their commitments to work together to meet them. Achieving the Millennium Development Goals offers the prospect of a more secure, just, and prosperous world for all. The UN Millennium Project was commissioned by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan to develop a practical plan of action to meet the Millennium Development Goals. As an independent advisory body directed by Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs, the UN Millennium Project submitted its recommendations to the UN Secretary General in January 2005. The core of the UN Millennium Project's work has been carried out by 10 thematic Task Forces comprising more than 250 experts from around the world, including scientists, development practitioners, parliamentarians, policymakers, and representatives from civil society, UN agencies, the World Bank, the IMF, and the private sector. Investing in Development: A Practical Plan to Achieve the Millennium Development Goals brings together the core recommendations of the UN Millennium Project. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses the progress that Vietnam has made toward meeting a core set of development goals that the government recently adopted as part of its Comprehensive Poverty Reduction and Growth Strategy (CPRGS). These goals are strongly related to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), but are adapted and expanded to reflect Vietnam's national challenges and the government's ambitious development plans. For each Vietnam Development Goal, the authors describe recent trends in relation to the trajectories implied by the MDGs, outline the intermediate targets identified by the government, and discuss the challenges involved in meeting these. Relative to other countries of similar per capita expenditures, Vietnam has made rapid progress in a number of key areas. Poverty has halved over the 1990s, enrollment rates in primary education have risen to 91 percent (although there is a quality problem), indicators of gender equity have been strengthened, child mortality has been reduced, maternal health has improved, and real progress has been made in combating malaria and other communicable diseases. In contrast, Vietnam scores worse than other comparable countries in the areas of child malnutrition, access to clean water, and combating HIV/AIDS. A number of important crosscutting issues emerge from this analysis that need to be addressed. One such challenge is improving equity, both in terms of ensuring that the benefits of growth are distributed evenly across the population and in terms of access to public services. This will involve addressing the affordability of education and curative health care for poor households. Improvements in public expenditure planning are needed to align resources better to stated desired outcomes and to link nationally-defined targets to subnational planning and budgeting processes. There is also a need to address capacity and data gaps which will be crucial for effective monitoring. This paper--a product of the Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Sector Unit, East Asia and Pacific Region--is part of a larger effort in the region to help governments move toward outcome-based planning for poverty reduction.

Book excerpt: As the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) pass their 2015 deadline and the international community begins to discuss the future of UN development policy, Poverty and the Millennium Development Goals brings together leading economists from both the global North and South to provide a much needed critique of the prevailing development agenda. By examining current development efforts, goals and policies, it exposes the structurally flawed and misleading measurements of poverty and hunger on which these efforts have been based, and which have led official sources to routinely underestimate the scale of world poverty even as the global distribution of wealth becomes ever more imbalanced.

Book excerpt: Anthology from the year 2015 in the subject Social Studies (General), language: English, comment: The book contains 7 articles of academic staff, peer reviewed by Bugema International Multidisciplinary Research Conference slated on September 28-29, 2015. The conference was cancelled. We felt the need to disseminate the findings as the MDGs are coming to completion this September 2015. Evidence based data are needed to evaluate the past MDGs and to contribute for the next Sustainable Development Goals Agenda that will continue the 2000 MDGs direction., abstract: The September 2000 United Nations Millennium Declaration was never an option but a felt need for global development and sustainability in the aspects of poverty reduction, universal primary education, gender equality and women empowerment, child mortality reduction, maternal health improvement, fight against HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, environmental sustainability and global partnership for development. Is the millennium development goals' path cleared for completion? Sustainability is the answer rather than end the MDGs. For this reason, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a new development agenda, has been conceived to continue in the next fifteen years what the MDGs have started and may have to be applied to all countries for societal peace, more job opportunities and a global agreement for climate change. The success of the MDGs and SDGs should be an obligation and a responsibility for everyone on this planet. There are numerous ways to get involved in every individual's way such as in education, research and social responsibility. With the good intention to contribute to the SDGs new agenda through empirical research, this book reflects some evidence based findings from seven studies done in Uganda and Philippines. Shaped from these empirical studies are the insights and recommendations meant to shed light and broaden the horizons of the policy experts involved in the transition from
